I spent a few hours today with a friend to come up with a new idea... We are going to start producing custom PC panels. These panels will go in place of the 5 1/2" Bays on a pc tower and will cover 4 bays. The length (incase you only have 3 bays) can be added or removed accordingly for extra costs. The front panel can be any color you want including mirrored. All of the labels are engraved and can be lit up with leds. The back panel will include holes to put the leds in. This is the first design and will be altered in order to improve the design. The main thing I want to know is the kind of interest you people will have here. I am looking at a price around $40 shipped (considering that many people pay that just for custom jewels). This will include the front panel and back panel along with all the labels and will be precut. I will work on installing some leds to give you a better idea of what it looks like when lit. Here are some pics.... The are some flaws in the black plexi as it was mostly a scrap piece and this is only an initial design. If there is interest I could have them shipped out by friday. If you are interested I'll take preorders UNTIL friday for $30 a piece.

The front panel installed without the controller ports or dvd drive plate

the back panel is the mirrored panel you can see the holes for the leds.

give you an idea of how the light will show through the engravings.

Thats awesome! If i had $40 or so laying around i would totaly buy that. But i dont, maybe in the future. But that is awesome. I'm thinking about doing a pc and xbox in a pc case. That might come in handy when i do that mod hopefully this summer (if i earn enough $) Anyway, good job dude!

EDIT:
If its possible will you guys make one that doesnt cover all of the drive bays? If i was toi buy one i would need those drive bays!

I can customize it to fit ANY amount of drive bays you need but the stock one is $40. any thing that is customized from there will be a small additional cost. Anything can be customized... you can add your own logos, text... anything

You've got the support of most of the people here obviously, since you showed pictures (that look great too, i might add). Maybe in a few weeks i can afford one.

Looks really good. I think modular single panel pieces would be better than one big piece. Those are all well and good if you're using a huge tower with 4 5.25" bays, but for those of with smaller cases, single 5.25" or even 3.5" cutouts would be even better. Like I would use a controller port one for a 3.5" bay as that's my only open bay.

I can cut out whatever size pieces you need. If you want 1 5 1/2" or even 3.5" let me know and we'll work out a price.

Heres somewhat what the xbox logo would look like lit up... in this picture I pull the 2nd plexi piece away from the first to distribute the light a little better...

I will be redesigning the back pieces to use mostly el wire/tape but will still use leds for all the numbers. I think the lower MCD leds will work better on this because if it is too bright it just shines like a round led. ex:

Looks good....why not drill holes in the plexi backplate and mount the leds in them? That how those glowing blackplates on computer mods are normally done.....gets a very even glow and is indirect enough that it won't blind you but is still bright.
NeO529
May 12 2004, 07:52 PM
thats what is pictured in the second picture... the leds are just so bright that it doesnt show the number.

that looks awsome too bad i have a really small case.
could you make one for this?
this case herefor the bottom front panel it is curved. and can you make the etched letters different fonts?
NeO529
May 12 2004, 09:19 PM
the front panel piece is pretty thin and will bend a little so that might work... I can do the text in any font you would like.
weeman666
May 12 2004, 09:26 PM
ya thats what i was thinking i might buy one i would have to give you some info but i will be interested.

Here's an example of diffusing the led through the plexi....I've seen them used to outline knobs and such before, and it gives a great effect.
Also, I might've missed it, but how do you plan to mount it? Does it have inserts which screw into the drive bays?
weeman666
May 12 2004, 09:38 PM
thats awsome. i dont think he said how that were goin to be mounted.
NeO529
May 12 2004, 10:19 PM
they fit pretty firmly into place but if someone feels the need to or if it is a different design (like weeman) then hot glue from the inside would proabably work pretty well or definitley some epoxy.
btw how did they diffuse the leds exactly?
weeman666
May 12 2004, 10:26 PM
ya i think i would bolt it on there one bolt in each corner.

May 12 2004, 10:28 PM
You just drill a hole into the plexi and put the led so it's right in the middle of the layer. Some people drill holes in the edges and put a couple on each side. You'll get the best light where there are edges/cuts in the plexi.

May 12 2004, 10:47 PM
looks pretty good
NeO529
May 12 2004, 11:09 PM
so your saying dont drill all the way through?? cause if you look on the mirrored piece I drilled holes through it for plexi.
Birdtales
May 12 2004, 11:17 PM
Make your holes so that the LEDs can lay on thier side. That would difuse the light better I think. At least there wouldn't be a bunch of bright dots on it.
cueball13
May 12 2004, 11:31 PM
Yeah, birdtales has the idea. The way I'm talking about doesn't involve a mirror....I guess you could add one behind it, though. In that case, it would definitely be best to have the leds on the edges lying parallel.
NeO529
May 12 2004, 11:54 PM
alright i'll see what I can do about lying flat... but i'll probably jsut use EL tape for the smoothest glow and then low mcd leds for the #'s

Okay here is what we have decided to do. We are gonna offer a few different items that will allow people more customization options for themselves without us having to customize EVERYONE's order. We are gonna offer the original 4 bay design like planned with a few more alterations. On top of that we are going to make single 5 1/2 bay panels that will either contain the XBOX logo (or your custom text/b&w art work for aditional cost), the controller port holes and labels, or the switch holes and labels. This way you can arrange them however you would like.
We have also concluded that the best way to light these will be eltape and dim leds. In the following days we will test out the ideas and eventually turn it into a full kit which will include all the lighting pre wired and assembled.
