That would be hard. The laptop would be like 10 inches thick

You'd have to also fit the Xbox to VGA system in there, and put LCD screens in there. Not to cast a dark light on your idea, it's kick ass. I'm just sayin, it'd be REALLY hard and REALLY expensive to do.

just another update on where my render is at...
note the dimensions. only 2.75in tall!

still missing controller ports, power/eject button and fan(s).
I'm thinking about vents in the front and flow-through cooling. 2 60mm fans should be more than enough. all the drives screw into the outer case (which would hopefully be made of metal.) and should be pretty strong.
edit: as a mod stated earlier, I know this design becomes property of xbox-scene / project deck because I posted it here. no problems though, you guys are welcome to use it or any parts of it if you find it useful.

I think that if we made this out of brushed aluminum it could be done pretty easily, and relatively cheaply. I love the simple look that the aluminum gives a case while keeping the ability for the case to keep a very professional look. Also, it would bring the possibilty of anodizing the case to create different colours.

May 29 2004, 08:05 PM
anodized alluminum is pretty cool, not sure how difficult it is to do.
a steel case would definately be cheaper, but I'd pay maybe $15 more to have it made of brushed or anodized alluminum... not much more than that though, I want this to end up being cheap

you guys here dont need to worry about going all the way with the cad designs... if you have a good idea for a layout or add-on that you'd like to contribute or just want to cheer us on

please go ahead but you needn't worry yourselves with the details, we've been progressing forward at a steady pace, and have a whole lot of good ideas lined up.
we have some top notch case layouts and vona and I have been working on some crazy electrical stuff lined up, definilty stuff you haven't seen before and definilty stuff, (if the survey results were any indication) that you'll all like/want/use

**
we're currently working on designing 2 cases actually. the first one will probably be smaller (housing 1dvd and 2hdd, the most common configuration from the survey), very VERY modable, and hopefully reasonably priced. we're working on getting this one out the door as quickly as possible. after that we'll be consentrating on getting some of the electrical stuff out. and then we'll be working on getting our a larger (2DVD 4HDD) case that will be a little more expensive but very expandable, probably not much in the way of visual mods but that case will definilty offer much in the way of internal expandability.
now when I say soon I mean in a month or two... the project time table is for august, there's always a whisper of a chance none of this ever happens but we're all doing our best to make sure it does happen and when it does it's done f*ckin proper
you'll have a little more insight once we have a solid direction for all of this stuff.
**note: trying not to sound too much like a modchip enticement post

Yep, i like that, but since you guys dont want to get sewed you should change the "X" to another letter like "Z", because it soulds like you guys are creating you own consol compatable to xbox. this dosent seem like a mod. lol
i like the touch idea.
if youve ever seen a Apple monitor (the new ones) they have a touch button made out of plastic and has a led behind it when its on. i like that alot, almost was about to buy the monitor just cuz of that, but relixed too much $$ for a Apple monitor...
just a sugestion...
and also,
2 dvd drives are not needed, and i like the HD swap idea.... but dont forget the intetnet conection and the box should come moded stock.
keep us updated, i wonder how much this is going to cost????????/

just another idea, because it sounds like you guys dont want the controler wires in the way is....
you could have all the ports wireless, so you would for example buy a witeless controler and hide the thing inside the box...
i think that would be cool, and you can have the power rin off the system
let me know what u think

No. At least not simply or cheaply.

Jun 1 2004, 01:07 AM
Of coarse.
I just keep picturing a slot on all the deck designs.
Forgot to add,
for easy on/off of case, couldn't you use those butterfly screws like the mounting plates of digital cameras and tripods?

Or I could donate the hood pins from my GTO. J/K

Just an Update. I'm still hoping to get a prototype cranked out within the next 2-3 weeks. This weekend has been no fun for those that have seen my terabox thread =/
To finalize the case here's what we have so far.
2 HDDs
1 DVD
1 Expansion bay (extra dvd/HDD)
xIR power functionality
Plexiglass case design (2nd will be metal/aluminum)
"touch" buttons
Theater mode (dims or turns off all lights)
and more

Other options and features will be available, including solderless video/audio panel.
Just a little update
Manufactors, if you have the ability to cut and machine plexi affordably and efficiently PM me, we have a couple shops, but we need more. Let me know if you can help!

mmmmm.... touch buttons
Theater mode sounds cool too, even though I like to see my LEDs lighting up my Xbox. Options are always wonderful.
I like what I hear so far, not a big fan of the plexi since it would be going with my entertainment center. I can always wait for the aluminum release though.
Keep up the good work guys

Maybe this one is nice instead of xIR:
http://www.chiptech.de/content.php?rad_id=221Unfortunately it's in German, I'm not good enough at it to translate it in English,
but main thing is it uses key sequenses rather then just one button (to avoid accidently shutting of the xbox) and it also operates the tray and modchips (or other configurable items)
As for the touch buttons, I found some here:
http://www.qprox.com/products/qt310_320.phpThey have a lot of different ones, about $2,00. even less if you buy large quantities.
Well, hope your hand gets better soon!
twistedsymphony
Jun 1 2004, 06:07 PM
heh thanks mattie but we're making our own IR device similar to the xir and the one you linked but with some ther cool stuff... normally we'd just say buy the stuff that already exists, we arn't trying to re-invent anything thats out there, we're trying to fill a gap in the market. so the reason we're making our own IR device is the ones currently available were missing a lot of the functionality/customizability that we'd like in our case.
as for the touch buttons yeah we're actuallying using one of the ICs available on that site but people who buy this wont have to worry about soldering it all together, should just be plug and play, possibly a solder option for those who want it.

for future reference if one of the team members posts something here that we're planning on doing, we've already dicussed it to DEATH in our private forum and decided they way we're going is superior to any of the other options for one reason or another.
so when we say touch buttons, we've already determined it has the right amount of function/form/price and we have how to wire it up already figured out.

Like Palmore said pexi will not be the only case type made. Its just gonna be the
first case type made.
There will be a second case, and it will NOT be plexi. It'll probably take more time to produce and most likely cost more too though

Jun 2 2004, 03:29 PM
yeah we've done a lot of research into those home theater pc cases... and that's really the major reason we decided to go witht he plexi... it keeps it well with in the price range.. aluminum skyrockets the price way out of range for 95% of the people. I mean not many people are willing to pay more than the price of the xbox for an xbox case

that's why the metal case is going to be our second case, we're not sure about how much we can actually make it for.

Jun 2 2004, 03:36 PM
I totally understand, pricing is everything for a sucessful run of cases. Gonna buy one to put in my home office, and maybe drop my PC into it if there is room.

Jun 2 2004, 05:12 PM
What is the price difference between aluminum and plexi? my hope is that you develop the aluminum case with the Idea that people who can't afford the options that you will put in it (wireless controllers, vfd etc.) will buy the riced or plexi version. A link for you
http://store.yahoo.com/webtronics/etser19profr.html might help with the "better" version.

SniperKilla that machine is not a laser cutter, its much cooler than that, it is a Stereolithography rapid prototype machine. We have 2 at the company I work for,
They will make a plastic part out of a container of liquid resin and intersecting lasers from a CAD drawing to exact specs. This process is great for prototypes but isn't cost effective for production.
