I tried creating a skin at 1920x1080 resolution but Ava just pretended it wasn't there...

720x480 is normal widescreen resolution.
If you want high-def skins you could always check out Inertias allstar skinpack for UnleashX, now i don't have a HD setup myself and i can only use 480p but just try them maybe they'll suit you?
