So I'm sitting here drafting out new designs which I might use for my next mod.

Looking for inspiration, I decided to watch TV while I doodle...

There's nothing on right now, so I switched over to the history channel. Guess what's on...

The History Of Salt

And I swear, this is 100% true... The anouncer said "Comming Up: The Extreme Side Of Salt"

For the love of all that's good! IT'S SALT!

...And that got me thinking... Should I cut out flames in the case and have them lit up with a CC, or should I cut out everything but the flames and have the CC as a backdrop?

haha that stuff has been on all day they started with like the mining of gold then went to mining of silver, dimonds, copper, and now salt it is like the mining day on the history channel. And i have no idea how i no this information lmao

I was hoping to go with classic gaming colors (Black, Green, Silver).

I've seen red flames done before. But I've yet to see anyone do something like green flames. I'll finish up my templates and see if it'll look good, or if red is the only way to go.

I hadn't thought about using different colors of leds. That would provide a heck of alot more coolness than having a single color. Anyone got some pics of something similar? I'd love to see melds of CCs and LEDs together done well.

I watched the show on coal mining that was aired prior to the salt one. I didn't watch all of the salt episode though.

i was watching that too man

the extreme side of salt was how they store radioactive materials (or want to) in salt mines as the temperature doesnt change

and they didnt want people form 1000years from now trying to use the salt, or exposing the waste

so they tried to think of a way to show future humans to stay away with pictures of spikes and masks
kinda weird but thats the way it works i guess

I love how they always manage to tie EVERYTHING to WW2 somehow. Name one topic that they didn't manage to tie to it! I dare you!

I made some templates of the top of the xbox case a while ago. That way, whenever I get an idea, I can sketch it out and see if it'd be worth doing.

First, I've sketched varying kinds of flames. I made some that were butt ugly, and others that were pretty good. Right now, I'm coloring them to various schemes. When I'm finished, I'll scan them and put them up so you folks can tell me your opinions

lol... yeah, there's really nothing much you can do with salt.

Okay, I've scanned my sketch. I decided to break it down into fourths, doing a different design on each part. The first two were pretty bad, so I didn't bother coloring them or anything.

The basic idea is this: Cut out the flames, or cut out the rest?

Yeah, I agree. At first I thought it would be cool to do some detailed painting on the flames, and then have a lit background. But after looking at my sketches (they're alot more helpful in real life, really) having the flame lit would be better.

You should simply cut the flames in like 1\8" and then use a heat blower to melt the plastic a bit so you can bend them around and make 'em wavey and stuff, that would look so cool.

Yeah, I'm aware of the excellent work of layser. However, his stuff curves upward, among other things.

For me, if a mod hurts functionality, I won't do it. Needless to say, his case could break if you threw it in a carying case to take to a LAN.

My plan is to put my plexiglass flush with the top of the case. Yes, I know that's going to be time consuming and all that, but hey, it'll look alot nicer when it's done.

Of course, if anyone has any suggestions, I'm listening

if I was using plexi for the flames then I would sand (or file) the edges so the it would kind of be a window sill. Kind of hard to explain...BTW I think it would look better flush, i'm a fan of cleaner work.

Also if you're going to take the time to do it, I also agree with you that you might as well take a little extra time to do it right.

Fuck yeah there's an extreme side of salt, it tastes fuckin good when you apply a proportionate amount to food that salt goes good on! It looks like there's also a chance that you can buy radioactive table salt on accident! Without salt your body keels over and dies so salt can actually kill you.

Pretty extreme dude. Take my advice and don't fight salt, salt will win.

Yeah. It's weak when somebody does this really cool mod and then just throws a huge sheet of plexi underneath. That's like building a salt palace next to a lake: It's just not cool. (If you're one of the nerds that watched the show, you know what I'm talking about. But if not... they built huge and extravagent rooms out of 100% salt!)

Now, what IS cool is using a salt mine to store priceless works of art and.... of man... I can't beleive I watched that whole thing!

At first I was planning on melting the plexi into place. Then I thought about shaving the inside of the xbox at just the right places. But yeah, taking the time to make a perfectly tall enough ledge on the plexi is probably best.

Monke pointed out the idea that I should warp and bend the plexi so that it looks more like flames with the light shining on it. I could also throw in tiny bits of colored plastic to help with the effect. Somewhere around here I got the idea to use somewhat dim LEDs along with the Cold Cathode, to add in subtle lighting colors. Man... that would take a while to position.

What kind and thickness of plexi do you people usually get when doing a mod? Since I'm probably going to be bending and warping it, I think I'm gonna get a sheet today so I can practice and experiment before designing the xbox case anymore. (You know... to check how feasible some ideas are, etc)
