so i was able to get my 120gig to work and got it locked the right way, but now it wont boot to the xbox dashboard. it just says xbox in big letters and underneath it says MS. it just sits there. i was wondering how to fix this. would it take a complete unlock, fix it, then re-lock?. btw, i can play games only if i cold boot, and i aslo did not put anything in the E folder when i installed my hd from scratch w/ xboxhdm(which i hope is not the problem).

RESTORE YOUR C:\ DRIVE:
After rebooting go to option screen. Write "2" and press enter. After you hit enter it will ask you to write "yes" or "no". Write "yes" and press enter. first it will format your C:\ drive:
and then if you have proper files in the cd it will copy the files from cd to C:\ drive, you can also use this option to downgrade dash if you dont have a memcard to do savegame exploit:
write "yes" and hit enter. C:\ drive will be copied from cd.
This is what i would like to do as i am stuck in clock loop. Newayz after a series of posting this and hotswapping are my only options left as i have no FTP access.
What i was wondering is if there is anyway i can do this w/o cracking open my xbox, and if i have to open it if i can have a link to a step by step to doing the connecting to my pc and stuff.
Many thanx Dark Assasin
EDITBtw i have already put the files to restore my xbox to its original state and the eeprom on a disk.

@blame canada,
This can be because of the softmdo fonts.. if the fonts are not for your kernel version or if the fonts cannt find the -habibi signed .xbe to launch then this hangup happens.. I would say you misplaced any softmod files..
@DarkAssasin,
there is a hotswap tutorial by dadyj. You have to open your xbox unleass you can somehow get out of the clock loop ( put a network cable and let it open) and use gamesave to enable ftp. search for "dadyj's Hotswap f.a.q" tutorial.
@rocketx13,
error 21 is a dashboard problem so you are missing something in C:\ or if you are using exploit then something there..

im not trying to install a softmod...i am trying to install/restore my m$ dash on my bigger hd, but i put some softmod files in my C drive accidentely when i was building my new hd, so now it wont boot up to the m$ dash, but still recognizes that its there...would i have to hotswap then either delete these files or completely rebuild the hd?

Hi!
I have been "lurking" for a while and have succesfully "waffletooled" my Xbox.
Unfortunately, my files got corrupted on the C drive and now the Xbox won't load ANY dashboard. As typical, it still at least plays regular xbox games. That being said, I have tried a newish Xbox game and tried to install the ms live dashboard.
NO GO! I also tried rerunning the exploit via a gamesave. Nada.
So, I want to use xboxhdm to restore my xbox to retail condition. I originally backed up, via FTP, the contents of my C drive. I made the mistake of NOT backing up the eprom (UGGG!). So, it looks like a hotswap is in my future.
YET......I HAVE A QUESTION...
If I were to use the xboxhdm boot cd, would I compile it with original contents of my C drive? By this I mean, I would put my backup in the "/linux/C/" folder before I compile the xboxhdm CD...right??
Thanks for any help!

I got my answer by doing a little more digging around here. I will tell you this, these are NOT the easiest forums to find your answers.
There is SOOOO much information to sift through. But, it is there. It took me a couple days to compile the information I needed and how it related to my specific 1.4 Xbox. I guess I could have used Google to make my searching easier. Anyone have any tips on searching these forums? Anyhoo.....
I went ahead and created the Xboxhdm cd with the UXE exploit (After I setup the UXE exploit font files and Nkpather files with the bath files built into UXE) in both the C and E folders. When I finally hotswapped and unlocked my drive (Took about 10 tries

) I then used HDM to wipe and install the contents of the Xbox's C folder with the UXE C folder. I then used the file manager (xplorer??) to copy the files from the UXE E folder to the Xbox E folder. Rechecked everything, rebooted.... NO MORE FRAG! YES!
Thanks for the great tool!

Great advice! That is THE first thing that I did. That way, if I want to redo my Xbox, plug'er in and wham...done.
BTW, I couldn't believe how fast the mod went after I got it hooked up to xboxhdm. Very nice.
I used a neat trick to get my Xbox to unlock. I went into Splinter cell, chose "load game" and then a gamesave, after that it brings you to a screen where you can sellect different places to start from. At that point, since I KNEW the hard drive HAD to be unlocked, I unplugged it and plugged in the PC. Flawless. Worked really well. Now I want to put a big hard drive in it!!! ;-)

Use clone XB. Works everytime! Also, make sure you have your bios (On your PC) setup so it boots from your CD/DVD drive BEFORE it tries booting from the hard drive.

Good day,
I've been trying to follow this thread for some time, and I think I have a pretty good understanding of how things work, but I've yet to get my hands dirty and try softmodding. I actually don't even have an xbox, but my friend does, and he wants me to mod it.
The thing I don't understand is how I can get the eeprom.bin file from a virgin xbox w/ only the hotswapping? And if I can't, can I still unlock/lock the xbox's hd?
Other than this, I think I understand everything else.
Thank you for your time,

Define "won't work"
* Won't work in xbox (error message?)
* PC/xboxhdm doesn't recognize hdd
etc etc

It's locked with an incorrect key. You can only unlock it with the exact same key. If you happened to use 'waffletools/installer' and a 1.6 xbox, that's the cause. It makes incorrect backups.

1. Don't use just any old password. I used a password that I'd remeber when I was first playing around.
2. Regardless of the above, make sure your eeprom bin is on your xboxhdm cd. When you go to option #6 in xboxhdm (Generate lock password or something like that) and run it, it shows you a bunch of information . One peice of that information is a VERY long Hard Drive password that you need to write down.
3. GET YOUR DRIVE UNLOCKED! If you used the floppy with the DOS unlock tools (always the best way!), then the password you used will be in a text file called hdpass.txt ( i believe that's the name).
4. Go back into xboxhdm, go to the drive utitlities, run option #6 again. Now, immediately use #7 and make a floppy. Now reboot with that floppy. Now use hdlock.bat. When it asks for the password, put the VERY LONG password that you got in item #2 above.
Voila! Locked for use with your xbox.
FWI, the really long password that you used to lock the hard drive is the eeprom and your hard drive information mixed together into a text string. That hardware information is what your xbox uses to unlock that drive via the password. So, if you ever upgrade your hard drive to a bigger one, you will need to use the password generator to make another password based off of your new HD information. Get it?
Hope it goes better than it already has....

Do you have the eeprom/did you correctly typed the password?.. you dont need an floppy to boot in DOS mode.. Just boot to xboxhdm option "4". There type "atapwd"..an dput master password "XBOXSCENE"
