I installed ude 1. Now when I turn on the xbox with the drawer open I am suppose to see a dashboard. But what I get is the matrix style stuff and the a menu with stuff like run mini linux, ude install. So I don't think this is a dashboard? Am I correct. Did I not install a dashboard in the ude install.
Trying to setup up ftp access and I have no place to put a password etc...
Any ideas.

Well I followed the guide to put the usb stick in the xbox get the error screen use usbview to get the yyyy and zzzz digits. Well after that I went to control panel> device manager picked usb and tried to install a driver manually. Action Replay didnt come up in the list. I followed all the instructions of replacing the VID and PID. Is it because the version of my AR or is there some other reason?
Thanks

Do you have more than one peice of software from Codejunkies? I had Xbox AR software and GBA AR software on my comp, and it screwed up tranfering gamesaves with the Xbox AR software. So, there might be a problem with that.

the memory card can't have the AR xbox driver on it if you didn't format it with the xbox. Are you sure you formatted it with the xbox, and you could transfer gamesaves from the HD to the stick and vice-versa?

Thanks for the tutorial!
I'm new to soft-modding and I'm gonna try using ltools. I'm using PAL-version of Splinter Cell to do the GameSave exploit and have (thanks to this great tutorial

) been able to get the ltools over to the Xbox. The Linux profile turns up in the game; so far so good in other words. Problem is that when I click on the "Check points" button (after I've clicked on Linux), nothing happens even though Evox is suppose to start. I can't do a thing with the controller and the Xbox doesn't seem to load, but the music is still playing.
Can this have anything to do with Action Replay Software, like it making a bad save file or something (tried several of time and I don't get any errors)? I should also add that I have inserted the datelinfo.xbx from the Splinter Cell save file, that comes with AR Software, into part1.zip and part2.zip from ltools as said in the tutorial.

Sep 12 2004, 12:27 AM
ltools doesn't take you into Evox when you load the save. It is a Linux-based program that will install the UDE exploit. Just wait for a menu to pop up asking what you want to do.

I have found that using the driver file in the updated AR(action replay) install is not sufficient on some USB Thumb Drives. I would like to suggest trying AR 1.05 's driver. This should get you to where your AR will recognize your USB Thumb Drive. This will allow you to transfer saved game files. I have successfully transferred some of the default Saves that come with AR 1.31 (the most recent Updated AR Software). I would suggest downloading both version of the software. AR 1.31, simply because its the most recent, And AR 1.05, for the driver file.
This SHOULD get you passed the stuck point of AR not recognizing your Thumb Drive. I, on the otherhand, am still stuck at the point of transferring my Altered saved game files to the mem stick (Not the AR Archived ones though!!). It continually gives me "Not a Valid Xbox Save" or something of the sort.
Forthex, have you found a solution for this? Or perhaps wanna give explaining it more detailed another go? I know it seems tedious, but I also took my time and added my findings so that others might save their time messing with it themselves.

Sep 13 2004, 05:48 AM
If you are using the MechAssault Sploit. Do not seperate the file into seperate Saves. Make sure to ONLY Add the datelinfo.xbx file to the EvoX folder inside the save (the actual folder name is: 62D648EBF155 ) Put it INSIDE that folder. And edit the skin inside if you want a different background

Inside the skin folder are the files you can edit. BTW... ONLY Put ONE datelinfo.xbx file in the EvoX folder.
These are my findings. And have gotten me from "Duh how does this work" to "Resolution" So if you need any more help ask a question, I'll recheck this thread throughout the week for some followup, but not for long after that.

Hey guys, I am a newbie. I made my own USB cord that will allow me to hook up USB items to my Xbox, I am using an MP3 Player (128meg) I plug it in and it detects it on the Xbox and says it needs to be erased, I then did all that techy stuff with the ini file hacks etc and it turns it into Xbox format, however in Action Replay Software, I must have the weirdest error you've ever seen.
It shows as a memory card, and says
Device Size: 1 Block
Space Free: 0 Blocks
:/ WTF is up with that, when I access it on the Xbox through memory it says something like 78549 blocks or a high number like that.
Please help, obviously I can't transfer anything to my memory stick now.
I am trying to do this on an Australian PAL box to get Linux etc on.
EDIT: I right clicked on the memory card in the Software and clicked Format and it seems to be working now...
I'll probably bug you later with this directory stuff
HOLY CRAP.
Now I am annoyed, just as I think it's working it shits itself. I have done the save files correctly and zipped them etc. I transfered them to the Memory Card and plug it into my Xbox and turn it on, go into Memory and it keeps erasing it everytime
WTF is up with that?
The Xbox detects it and functions normally after the Xbox format, but when I plug it into the PC the AR Software only detects it as one block, so I format it in the AR software and it says 7888 blocks, I copy the stuff, but then it doesn't work on the XBox... WTF is happening to me, I am using the PAL software and it has nothing to do with the save games cuz it happens even when I leave the memory card empty. Is this just my badluck or is there something else I am missing?
Reccomend anything? I really badly want this working.
Thanks if you can help.

First, ensure that your USB Thumb Drive is on the compatibility list (I assume everything is correct). Then, if you didnt already. Read the tutorial again. Then read my previous two posts before this one, they're back to back. Basically you need to ensure that you edited the driver file correctly. And that you edited a compatible driver file. Depending on the USB Thumb Drive you got, compatibility for the drivers in my experience varies per drive. I'd start with the 1.05, see if it works. It it does, you're set. Otherwise, proceed to try the other versions of the driver that come with more recent versions of Action Replay. They change the driver it seems on every updated Software release.\\
*edit* Oh yea. Start Action Replay THEN insert the Thumb Drive. If it recognizes it, the AR at the top will flash green. Then under memory card, it will have a beginning directory. Default seems to also be Memory card (you can rename this once recognized).

Great tut!!! I am a nOOb and I am having a little problem. I went through and completed the list but when I got to the swap with Action replay, there was a problem. Action replay reconized my USB stick at first but when I tried to transfer it said I didnt have enough memory. I just purchased a 64MB stick and on the link you provided the mass storage is compatiable and states that this stick holds 4030 blocks. This file was only 467 blocks!! I took out the stick and shut action replay off but when I rebooted action replay it didnt even reconize the card. The AR on middle top just blinks for 3-5 sec.'s and then stops. I cant even swap files now!! If you can help in any way this would be great!!! Thx

Sounds like you are having the same problem as me maybe, format your key on the Xbox and plug it back into your PC and tell me if you get "1 block" in the AR software...
I think my problem is that for some reason my Xbox and Action Replay software are both formatting in different formats (How is that possible)
Are there any Xbox formatting programs that will format my key to xbox format with out using the xbox to do it?
EDIT: You might wanna add this to the tutorial, after you've used the driver on the memory stick, if it's for a DC or MP3 etc, after you've uninstalled the AR driver, you need to take out the key, plug it back in and Windows will detect it as new hardware, and it should ask to format it, make sure you format it as the right type. I thought I killed my MP3 because it kept turning off because I formatted it as FAT32, if you look in the manual it may say FAT16 or FAT, I reformatted the key as FAT and it worked.

1.05 doesn't see the memory card
Also a weird thing I noticed, when I plug my USB key into the XBOX it says it has been erased but my songs are still on the player, ALSO, it says it everytime it is unplugged and plugged back in, if I leave it it and exit the menu and go back in it works though...
Hmmm does the same in AR, when I format it in AR it says 7888 and 7882 free, when I unplug and plug back in it says 7888 but 0 free... WTF?
If I exit the program with and unplug it says 1 block 0 free

Pyro: Unless I myself have the exact device you are using, I, with my limited knowledge on the subject, cannot further assist you

Im sorry.
The only advice I can give you is seek advice further on this thread or go out and buy a new USB Thumb Drive. But, if you dont want to do either of these, Try and download all the other versions of AR and installing them. If you followed the tut, he said to install to default directory (so that his screenshots would correspond with your actual screen). What you need to do, is go to the Driver folder in EACH installation ( and remember to uninstall or backup past installs of AR when doing a new one ) and Edit the driver .ini file as properly shown in the tut. Try EACH and EVERY one of them. See if they work. I cannot guarantee a particular one except state that the 1.05 worked for me. Try using other drivers and editing it accordingly. If all drivers fail to work for you, I'd suggest actually buying an Action Replay Mem card, or Buying a USB Thumb Stick

Ok i fixed the problem by formating the drive and reinstalling the max driver. Now I have ran into another problem. Every time I transfer the file over to the my USB (AVB 64MB mobile USB drive, 1.1 data transfer)and plug it into my xbox this message always pops up, "the memory device you insert isnt functioning properly, all data has been erased" Well something like this. I had it pluged in on boot up and waited for the menu screen. I read in the beginning of the tut that the error message comes up and that is when the USB is formatted. Why is it that everytime I take the stick out and place it back into the controller I get the same message??? Isnt it already formatted??? I triple checked everything, I even bought mechassualt and 007 and still no luck. I have tried all versions and no luck. I just downloaded action replay 1.05 and 1.20, installed both and no luck. I did erase current app.'s so there would be no conflicts. Should I buy a new stick?? Has anyone used this USB?? WTF is going on! any comments or help would be great. Thx!

Another weird 'flashy' problem... please help me or something
Alright, I was all excited, telling my friends that I was modding my xbox today, going to get a thumbdrive and everything. Well I went to go buy one, stopped at two stores with the list in hand and eventually got the only one available that I saw on the list, which was the Kingston DataTraveler USB flash memory drive of 256 MB, listed on the list as "Kingston DataTraveler 32 MB (1998 blocks) & 256 MB (15740 blocks)"
I come home and try it out and ... wow.. it does the think where the blinking and the beeping happens when the card is in and i go to Memory.
Yes, I inserted while it was on, while it was off, in the middle of any part of getting to the memory step, and repetedly 100 times in a row at the memory screen.
This sucks.
I just wanted to bring up that the list could possibly be wrong and that it made me waste 60 dollars on a card I couldn't even use the once...

Hey I had this problem and posted it but never got any replies.
I used an interact memory card and homemade USB cable about 8 months ago to transfer the Morden Audio hack to my xbox - worked a treat.
I had to edit the driver.ini but that was all explianed in tutorials.
Ok so last month I went to put on ltools 1.6, plugged memory card in and AR software light flashed green and showed what was on there - deleted the file and tried to transfer the new one ....
the light flashed green the bar filled up but then didn't refresh what was on there - I unplugged the card - plugged it back in and the morden hack was still on there!
Put card in xbox and erased everything then tried again still the same.
Interestingly a datel save would transfer - so I thought I'd messed the save up.
Being safe I had a copy of the save I transferred before 8 months ago - tried to transfer and got the same problem.
Tried taking the datel file out of a save that transfered and putting this in - didn't work.
Tried the newer software- re-edited the driver - didn't work.
In the end I ftp'd it to my xbox and then used a 256 Easy Disk (Luwen) thumb key to transfer to another xbox as the ltools save was to big for my card !
I removed boxplorer from the ltools save - then transfered to my memory card from xbox and it worked - so before you say it my memory card isn't stuffed.
I still have not managed to get the datel software working - I thought it may be a DLL problem and noticed they include all the dll's with the newest version so I reformatted an old laptop and tried it on there - still the same problem this was with a base install of 98SE so couldn't be more basic.
My other machines all run XP Pro and I've tried 2 machines.
Not sure what's going wrong but would like it solved if possible, ps. I've since installed the xctrl driver for my xbox pad and been using it for MAME on the PC and it works fine so I don't think it's my USB cable.

the "blinking" problem is either the xbox trying to format the stick, but can't, or your xbox might have a built in antinon-xbox-memory-card system. It could be possible, think about it. I have a version 1.0 xbox, 3944 kernel, and i think a 4260 dash, so mine is probably the most exploitable.
To help out, try different USB storage devices (like CF cards, MP3 players, etc.). After trying at least 2 or 3, tell me which don't work, and what xbox version you have... also, if you have Live, the dashboard might be configured by M$ to not accept "courrupt" memory card. I mean, the only real way to courrupt a regular xbox memory card and make it usable again is to take it apart and put it near a magnet.
oh yeah, you can't use your whole laptop as a memory card. however, you can get an IDE to USB converter and use your laptop's harddrive as a memory card... it would be HUGE though.

Forthex,
I do have Xbox live install thanks to counter strike but I never been online playing games. Can this cause the conflict with my Xbox erasing the saved game? If so, How can you uninstall xbox live? I dont know what version I have but I think it is a v1.0 (K 4034.01 D 5659.03). I also downloaded action replay 1.05, 1.20, and 1.31 but on accident I erased the 1.31 and I cant find it on Code junkies anymore. DO you have any alternate links? How do you re-zip the saved game after inserting the datelinfo.xbx file (AR is installed in the default area)? do you use the rar sodfware or winzip?? Stupid question but this may be my problem! OK, here's my situation. All I want to do is run XBMC on my Xbox. I do not care about any other functionality. Hopefully that simplifies things.
A few weeks ago, I started this idea. The XBMC website directs us to XBox Linux when talking about Soft Mods.
I did the MechAssault exploit successfully from there.
Now, when I boot up, I have a Linux option on the menu that starts a mini version of Linux.
So, to make a long story short, I can now FTP things directly to the C: drive of the XBox.
Is there a simple group of files that I can simply FTP over there in order to get a different dashboard installed?
I know that most of these steps in the tutorial are to get in without a mod chip, and get a loader running for the install. Since I already have FTP access, can't I bypass all that and just FTP the install over and reboot the xbox? Or do I need to start all over again with a 'proper' gamesave exploit since the Linux one isn't what I really need?
forthex
Sep 19 2004, 12:23 AM
first of all,
UNINSTALL THE EXPLOIT YOU PUT IN!! THESE ARE CRAPPY FONT HACKS, AND YOU CAN GET INTO A CLOCK LOOP IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFULL!!And get ltools mechassault UDE installer from xbins (see
here, and when you get in, go to Xbox/Operating Systems/Linux/Distributions/ltools and choose the one for mechassault). Open it in mechassault, and install the UDE exploit.
Now, when you get FTP access into your Xbox, make an "apps" folder in the E: drive, so it will look like: E:\apps\XMBC, and put all the files from XBMC into that folder, restart your xbox, and then you should have XBMC.

Ok, I was afraid you were gonna tell me to remove it all and start over

Anyways, I did that. uninstalled the linux load exploits.
I went thru your guide. My first attempt was to use a Kingston 128MB stick. This is what I successfully used with the other linux exploit. Action Replay would not recognize it! I tried both versions of the software.
Next, I tried a SanDisk 512MB stick from work. The XBox would NOT format it! Gave me the error about it not working correctly.
Finally, I borrowed a SanDisk 256MB from a buddie at work since I saw posts here that they were successful with that. IT WORKED FOR ME AS WELL!
----
Ok, back to the guide. When I went into the install for the UDE, it asked a series of questions (5 or 6? can't remember). I did not know for certain what to pick for each question, but I guess I got them right ;-) Maybe you could add a part 2 to your guide for others explaining what each option is and why you might or should pick certain ones? I dunno, maybe there is already a guide for that somewhere that I didn't see?
----
After the dashboard install, I FTP'd in, and installed XBMC into e:\apps as you said. Evox auto-detected it and put it on the launch menu.
----
So, I just wanted to say THANK YOU! Other than the trouble getting a compatible stick and the uncertainty with the UDE install, your guide was crystal clear and easy to follow. Top Notch work, and a great contribution to the community here! :-)

The AR software just seems to have stopped working for me, perhaps it's really picky about dll's and I was lucky 12 months ago !

I use a sandisk 128MB Compact Flash Card. i find they work really well.
and to crazy priest, not everybody is "smart" like you, most of the people in this forum are newbies and don't know their way around... so stop being an asshole.

Make sure when you plug your MP3 player into your PC that you format it the right file format, I thought I fucked my MP3 player but then I just right clicked on it, format> FAT (Not FAT32) and it worked fine. Look in the manual to see what file format it wants.

YOU DID ALL THIS JUST TO TRANSFER YOUR SAVES FROM XBOX TO PC??????

Hey asshole, if I had EvolutionX on my xbox that would be great, this tut can get software on the box so that it can FTP, if we were following this tut we obivously don't have that software on our Xbox you spastic.

Excellent tutorial Forthex, but I am using Win 98, and have the following problem:
Having amended the driver file with the yyyy and zzzz digits, I go to the device manager, and try to replace the driver for my USB Storage Device.
Action Replay doesn't appear in the list.
If I manually choose the modified Action Replay .inf file, Windows tells me that the driver is not valid for my device.
I'm using a 32 MB EasyDisk, which formatted OK on my v1.1 Xbox. I have tried several versions of Action Replay. Is there an alternative to using Action Replay to transfer the files? I've got a Mac too if thats any use...
Many thanks again for all the info.

I don't have a modchip - planning a softmod, and I think the Saves Manager requires a modchip... however the FAQ claims it works with the Mega-X key. I don't have one of those, only an EasyDrive thingy... will that work?
