if you are only using 007_with_evox to get temporary access to play games off you HD, get a newer evox save. if you are looking to install the UDE2/UXE exploit, get ltools or waffletools and transfer the exploit as two saves.

Just the newest one of each (which ever I choose), I have the v1.6 and its hard to find solid "it works" posts. and what is a 'two saves' exploit? I thought I only needed the saved game transfered.

ltools and waffletools are actaully two gamesaves that work together to install the UXE/UDE2/whatever. there's the actual gamesave exploit and the installer, while a "with_evox" save is just a gamesave exploit. if you read this tut you would understand.
And what do you mean by "solid"? nothing about modding an xbox in anyway is "solid". It can be illegal (depending on what programs you use and if they use stollen code) and requires
some intelligence to figure out.

Umm 1.6's don't work - strange I ran ltools 18.rc1 from a dabsvalue memory stick on xmas crystal box - I'm pretty sure it was 1.6 as the screen went green and garbled in Linux.
I made a Xbox - USB Cable and used all the tricks on here, recognised it fine !
Showed up in windows as Lexar MEdia drive before I formatted it to xbox and edited the AR software to install it's driver for it.
Here's the link for anyone interested:
http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/components...?quicklinx=319MDabs Page for Memory Key
Maybe It wasn't a 1.6 ???

umm 1.6's do work. Well mine does anyway.
And i think if you read some posts about the particular softmod yuo're applying, when applying to xbox's with the new xcalibur graphics engine/chip the screen will be garbled because the linux drivers do not work. But that is just what's on the screen, everything else should function as per the softmod. Depending on the softmod, you can just wait x mins and then reboot the box.
I myself used Waffletools 12_24 SC installer. The only part that will give you a garbled screen with this installer (I believe) is when you go to backup the eeprom. Also, the eeprom backup does not work with this version of the waffletools installer anyway. But once waffletools is loaded (via Unleashx dashboard) you should be able to ftp to your xbox and copy across evox. Then run evox from file explorer and do the eeprom backup from there. then continue with the rest of the waffletools install. I recall there being a waffletools installer tutorial mentioned somehwere. Other than that read the 20 something pages in the relevant thread.
Hope this helps.

Could you just make a cable that goes straight from usb to the pc.......someone could make some sort of drivers or something that made the pc think the xbox hdd was an external usb hdd and just transfer the files right over the cable?....just an idea for those modders with no cash...although if anyone is interested i can get some 32mb jump drivers for around 15+shippin to you

oh yeah forgot to mention, I have an xbox v1.6b and my usb memory stick works fine on it =P.
I did try a card reader with cf card of course and also tried my usb portable laptop harddrive with no luck. The just went down to the computer store and purchased a 32MB usb memory stick for $15 AUD. Works a treat. I noticed DSE selling 128Mb usb memory sticks for $30, oh well at least my trusty 32MB does the job.

Hi forthex, thank you for the excellent tutorial.
However, my USB device didn't work for my new v1.6 NTSC xbox (K5838 D5960). Can I ask you and all other experienced users a few questions?
Here is my situation. I used an Olympics D510 digital camera with 64MB smartmedia, which is in the compatible list
here. After I connected the digital camera to the xbox via a USB adpater, xbox said the memory card was not working and would be erased. I pressed A and the 64 MB card was formatted. Then on the TV screen I could see the memory card besides the harddrive. The card information was also displayed when the card was selected (something like 3998 blocks and 3998 blocks free). I could also personalize the memory card i.e. input a lable for the card. I haven't tried to copy a gamesave from xbox HDD to the memory card because I don't know how to do that and there's only one game save (Dance Dance Revolution UltraMix2) on the xbox HDD. I couldn't find an option to copy this save to the memory card.
On the PC side, I installed the AR software, modified the .inf file under Drivers directory, updated the driver for the USB storage, and was able to drag and drop the exploit gamesave files into the AR interface. It's just the digital device that
couldn't be recognized by the AR software (The grey AR circle turned green for a second and then turned grey)
I have tried all three versions of AR software (1.05, 1.20, and 1.31), and used each driver of the three versions (basically all the combinations). Still the same result: AR software couldn't find the USB device. The last two versions both gave the error message of "USB device failed to enumerate". I've already tried the "uninstall, reinstall, reboot" method, still without success.
So my questions are:
1. What is your exact problem when your usb device is not compatible with your v1.6 xbox? Is it similar to mine or not?
2. Does anyone has any insights about this?
At the mean time I will borrow and try some other USB drives as well.
Thanks in advance.

One more question to all experienced users:
3. Many of you mentioned that some USB devices didn't work. Did you mean that the xbox couldn't recognize the device thus couldn't format it, or that the device was formatted into FATX but the AR software on PC couldn't find it?

I seem to have a problem with my Sweex 128 Mb memory stick, which is clearly listed on the compatibility list on how2xbox.com, but when I plug it in, it says that my memory disk isn't functioning and may be damaged.
BTW, my PC can only format it to 124 mB, anyone have thoughts on this?

Now i'm using a different stick, some cheapass mp3 player i had lying around, but there seems to be a problem, cause my xbox formats it, after which i stick it into my pc, where AR reads it as a 1 block/0 empty memory card, and then if i format it in AR my xbox can't read it and formats it

any clue what's going on there?

anarklov3r:
look in it's manual to see what type of format is should be (FAT, FAT32, FAT16, etc.). Once you do that, uninstall it's driver, pull it out, and then put it back into your PC. Once you do that, Windows should make it into a Drive letter (E, F, G, etc.) and say that you should format it. When the menu pops up, choose the right format. If it doesn't have the right format (windows only formats to FAT, and FAT32) look for some software that can format it to the right filesystem.

Ok thanks for the drivers but i already had them. I think i am selecting the wrong files or somthig, what file should i be selecting. Every time i select one i get this:
"The specified locatin does not conatin information about your hardware"
all it says in the instructions is point it to action replay, with no file path... thats really anoying. And as for the problem with your mp3 player you may want to try rolling back the driver, you can do that by the same way, by going to device manager and clicking on roll back driver. Or go here:
how2xboxhttp://www.how2xbox.com/usbmedia.htm
Uninstalling Xbox Drives USB:
Now, school is starting up (AHH!!!!) and you probably need that USB stick back to keep your Word docs on, or you need your CF card for your camera. You must remove the AR driver from the USB stick:
3: Plug your USB stick in to your PC (DON'T OPEN THE AR SOFTWARE!). Go to Control Panel, System, click on the Hardware tab, and click Device Manager. Go to USBIO controlled devices, right-click on ActionReplay XBox, and click uninstall. Go through the menu's and you should have your regular USB stick back.

I have a few things to add:
1. a SanDisk Cruzer 512mb Titanium stick works great
2. When trying to change the drivers make sure you go under USB Controllers because the drive also shows up under Disk Drives in Device Manager...Took me 2 days to figure out what I was doing wrong.
I used the same Itools SplinterCell package and it's now been "installing" for 12 hours...The green light just keeps flashing and nothing shows up on screen. From reading other walkthroughs I dare not turn it off untill it tells me I can.
Anyone else have this problem...guess I should ask in the other thread.

when the LED flashes green, it's ok to turn off your xbox. This was put in because on 1.6's, the screen is garbled, and you wouldn't know when to turn it off.

QUOTE(forthex @ Mar 22 2005, 04:10 PM)
when the LED flashes green, it's ok to turn off your xbox. This was put in because on 1.6's, the screen is garbled, and you wouldn't know when to turn it off.
Thanks alot. Rebooted and everything works...except the mini-linux doesn't like my component a/v connection. Bet that's way it didn't say it was safe to turn off my xbox. Hopefully when I get Xebain installed it will work with the component connection.
Thanks again.

hmm i am having a slight problem with this.
I am using a 32 mb card conected to a digital camera which is inturn connected through a usb cable. I connected it to my game controller, xbox recognizes it fine, erases it, then i go change the .inf for action replay, updated drivers, everything going good then i decided to test it out first with a gamesave (in this case a halo 2 flyable pelican save) and the Action replay sofware acts like the device isn't there. a little message that apperars when i hover my mouse over the AR symbol in the takbar says device failed to enumerate. Please help

ok i did exactly what the tutorial said...but AR wont recognize the USB stick no matter what. i try to drag the gamesave over to the memory card column and the "unavailable" cursor appears. im using a 64 mb Kingston memory stick (already formatted by xbox), and both the new version and the 1.05 version of AR arent working. i changed xbreader to the right numbers and added the datelinfo file and changed the driver for the memory card, too. does anyone have any idea of what might be causing this?

I'm planning on using ltools 007 or MA on my xbox. You guys are mentioning the garbled screen and all, but will it remain garbled in evox or just during install?
Great tutorial btw, forthex!

And also, my Lexar Jumpdrive Sport 256 works great on 1.6 with my homemade cord!

edit: also, must you do all the file dragging in your tutorial for it to work on 007 or MA? They load onto the xbox fine, but will it make a dif once I run it? Also ltools 007 1.75/MA 1.8 only come with one folder in the udata folder. Must it be done in two saves then?

I am having difficulties with this. I made a USB adapter, than plugged in a USB memory stick and my box gives me an error message that says my memory card may be damaged and it can't read it. I tried a different stick and got the same thing, what am I doing wrong here?

Forthex's tut rocks

...but looking at the other tut

(howtoxbox.com) it says that you have to have the LIVE tab on your standard dashboard before doing anything.
Is this really neccesary? I'm spending enough time messing around with USB drives at the moment without having to connect the ethernet port on the back of the XBOX and run a Live enabled game and updating the dashboard.
Never used Live and probably never will.

Thank you, and seeing how it has been a year (almost!) i can't really say i've done much. I haven't coded anything, i haven't written any softwar or really done anything for the community. But i guess you, in some small way, can say that i've helped...

Screw over M$ one Xbox at a time!
(that was an OVERLY BLAITANT catch-phrase plug)
BTW, the newer exploits (UXE) use the update.xbe found within Live-enabled M$ dash's.

works great followed the step by step.
i edited the ini file and then stuck my usb drive in. updated the driver for that usb drive. it found it and then updated. Open Pro Action up and took 2 secs but it showed it on the left hand side.

here is what i came up with USBVIEW.EXE <<<----- GREAT PROGRAM
BusDrive 32MB - buslink
vid = 0CAF
pid = 2317
Lexar Jumpdrive 250MB - Lexar
vid = 05DC
pid = A400
now this makes it so much easier for people that dont have a moded xbox. WOW
my 32 would never work in programs now i got it working da pc and its all good
good job on the poster for this info

For the guys that get the error in AR: NOT A VALID SAVE GAME.. I found out what is wrong.
You have 2 dirs in the exploit save game. Let say XXXX en YYYY.
Just follow all the instructions about copying the DATE* file from an original AR save game.
Than make a directory UDATA and copy XXXX dir into it.. Now zip the UDATA directory. And drop this into the Memory stick. It will work now.
Delete the XXXX directory in the UDATA and copy the YYYY dir into it. Now Zip that one again (delete the old .zip first otherwise it will merge them). And copy that .zip to memory..

it would be much appreciated if ppl stated what usb stick model they used to get it working. the usb compabitlity list is very old and inaccurate.
I just tried using my sony 16mb usb stick Microvault and it gives a memory unit 4A. I tried using my Sony DSC-P100 digi cam and Sony DCR-TRV330E vid cam with 4mb and 32mb memory sticks and that just gave blinking/refreshing issues.
I think the xbox doesn't like Sony products at all
Im going out to buy a Apacer 128mb usb 2.0 (handy steno ht202). If anyone has tried this before please let me know.
If that doesn't work I'm going to try the Seitec 128mb USB Memory bar.

just tried using a generic USB stick 64mb ThinkDrive and that gave blinking/refreshing issues...
I'm starting to think it might be the Dashboard/Kernel...

After spending a whole day testing out various USB sticks I bought one that finally works!
I got the 128mb Twinmos Mobile Disk Z4 working (7933 blocks)
Btw the Splinter Cell Classics Version Pal version works perfectly with Krazyzies Installer.

hi i just tried out this tutorial. i created the adapter using the memory card shell and attached a cruzer mini 256mb usb stick. i plugged it in and turned on the xbox. the xbox said the jump drive could not be read and was erased, just as planned. the only problem is when i try to save a game to the usb i get a copy failed message.

whats up? any help will be appreciated. i used this tut for the sole reason of having a usb memory card. no linux or anything.....simply to transfer large volumes of saved games.
thank you
