Submit a feature request for NeoGenesis

Do not use this thread to post about projects other than NeoGenesis.
Do not post questions/bug reports/feature requests without first reading the FAQs for NeoGenesis.
Do not ask where these projects can be downloaded.

this is something that sort of speaks for almost all of your emulators, besides the obvious ones

when you turn on a game genie code you have to exit the game, sometimes this can be annoying, would it be possible to make it so you don't have to exit the rom

or maybe a resest function too, but im sure your tired of hearing that one tongue.gif

I complained about the cheat codes, a week or two ago. Heh ^^;

Anyway, this one has been bothering me for a while. You say that 32X emulation works. But a 32X game that I loved back in the day, WWF Raw, doesn't run on NeoGenesis.

Now, it does somewhat run on Gens on Windows XP. Though you have to reset the 32X processors, then reset the Genesis processor, and it will eventually boot. There are major graphic glitches and the game will crash. But it does boot, at least.

I was wondering if it would be possible to somehow build upon the 32X emulation, and maybe find a way to get that game to work? Maybe it could help other 32X games to work.

An off chance, I know. But I thought it was worth asking.

Edit: Instead of going around and flooding the topics, I at least hope that I can make a general request for all the emulators here.
This goes along with the cheat code thing mentioned earlier.

The Windows versions of many of these console emulators have multiple cheat functions. There are the FCEUltra Debug codes, Pro Action Replay, Game Genie, Gameshark, Code Breaker, and the newer Action Replay. Among others. But your emulators typically only support raw hex and one other cheat device. Except the GBA emulator, which has all but Action Replay v3.
The problem is, some codes are created for a certain device, and not others. And there are few known ways of converting them. Certainly nothing that I could do, myself. So, I was wondering if you could possibly impliment these other devices. I think GSCentral.com has a resource for the encryption methods for each device.

Another problem is that you have to reset games for code changes, while the Windows versions can toggle on the fly. Which makes it difficult, if you need to turn off codes for some reason, for a short period of time.

I'm not as much bothered by the lack of reset, though. I would just rather have the code system improved. Please?

The recently released Gens Plus seems to have alot of improvements over the original and is being updated regularly. I don't know if the source is available but surely the author is obligated to release it at some point.

I do not see anything here that would be of use in the XBox version except perhaps the envelope disable option. However, I don't see how disabling the envelope could possibly result in correct sound emulation.

Hi,

Great work so far on Neogenesis, I now currently spend more time playing megadrive games than any other game on the xbox biggrin.gif

But, there is one thing that has been _really_ bugging me over the last few days, especially since starting on the sonic series _again_...

It seems as I am playing along I see a weird jitter on the screen, usually in the chequered areas of the screen on levels such as green hill, and most others.

I'd not noticed it until playing sonic, now it is just a thorn in my mind...

Currently i'm using a PAL xbox, and the game is NTSC US, i'm assuming it is the conversion from 60hz to 50hz that is doing it?

Will try to get hold of a euro copy of the game to confirm this theory.

Is this a known bug or problem, and if so... if you would ever like someone with a PAL system to test things i'd be more than willing to (any excuse to play sonic, hehe)

Cheers

Ok, after a littler tinkering around... i've managed to work it out.

Firstly, what I said about ntsc conversion seems to be the case, as I picked up another copy and told it to run in euro mode = no jitter.

But, I have found another interesting tidbit of info too...

It seems quite a lot of roms out there are region unlocked, i.e. Jap/USA/Euro compatible. This seems to trip up neogenesis, to the point that it seems to automatically run multi region roms in ntsc, regardless UNLESS you tell it to run it in euro via the game config menu.

And now, onto a request for this specific problem...

Why not have a menu option to select default mode for running games if there is no configuration setup for it already? i.e. all you have to do is select euro mode then if there is no config available simply defaults to euro...

That way at least when people see jitters they will know exactly why, and if they have the time can go look elsewhere for a home region game smile.gif

Just a thought, i'm sure i'll have others as I keep playing.

Just a tip... in a SESSION of neogenesis.. Whatever settings you pick for one game will carry over into the next game (if it does not already have settings). So you can use this to your advantage.

If you start a new session, pick first a game that is already set-up with euro as default, then exit and start the new one.

Just a tip to make things easier in the meantime.

I have a debug kit and I have been trying to launch NeoGenesis with no luck. I keep getting the message "An error occurred loading an Xbox executable". Any idea what's up? I've gotten this message with almost every emulator I've tried so far except for MAMEoX. Thanks!

Hi,

1. It would be nice to skip the "Game Configuration" after you select a game. (Now we have to press B to skip).

2. The screenshot button (Black I think) shouldn't be on the control, It should be on a menu after you push the right stick.

3. Why can't I use all the buttons, most of the games I have tested I can't jump or shoot, only 2 buttons works and rest of them is nothing except screenshot and speed and menu.
The control should be default on blue (punch or so), green (jump) and red (kick or bomb..) on every game, it takes too long to change the config buttons and test which one is to what.

The # 1 & 2 things have been improved in those newest emulators to xbox.

I have some lil cousins and they dont' know so much about the menus and so on, everytime they select a game they think the "green button" is to go skip the "Game Configuration".
And they don't know all the buttons so they are testing, they are pressing screenshots at least 1000x everytimes they are playing.

THX alot

Good point well made - seems that some of the defaults for controller config are questionable at best - I had to disable all the wonderous extra features of the controller to prevent me taking screenshots by accident and also to prevent me changing the graphics filter... playing world cup italia 90 with a stick rocks, but when you tense up and press the thumbstick it does funky things to your end scoreline wink.gif

Would be nice if extra features were placed in the right thumbstick menus more instead of keypress combos etc.

Also an option for disabling checksums on roms would be nice - many a time i've tried to enable game genie codes and get the good ol' red screen of fury... would be nice if checksum check could be bypassed or faked to allow cheaters like me (only on super hang on to get the super bike!) the chance to do things they didn't have the time and patience to do when they were younger.... biggrin.gif

Like I said, i'll keep playing and suggesting wink.gif

Thing is, all this can be done by going into the "controller options" under setup and config the controller the way you want (disconnecting the extraneous stuff you do not like) and then save the configuration. It will then ask you if you want to change it for "ALL" game configurations, say YES.

Then COPY the controller configuration over to the other 4 controllers.

The only feature worth turning off is the fast forward and that is only on the GBA and PSX emu's because those systems have an R button.
vn souljah
Yes, but it should still be default when installing the emulator, like other ones.

How do I make so I skip the "Game Configuration" after selecting a game, where in setup do I disable it ???

I really hope this in particular (along with your other emus) gets updated with your recently improved UI options soon-ish. wink.gif

I have all the new emulators, I have the version 16, and what is UI options ???

THX
kimota2004
Some of the best options in this improved UI (user interface) are:

720x480 and 720x576 modes in Video Configuration menu (sorts out Screen ratios for PAL TV users ie. no more need to use a hardware filter and keep the whole image on the screen)
option to hide filename extensions (makes menu much tidier)
and the Flicker Filter option (essential as it sharpens the image just beautiful)

At the moment these options are only to be found in his latest releases of Winuaex, xboyadvance, arnoldx and winstonx.

Q: Why can't I save the hires video mode settings? (E.g. 1080i)

A: Setting the hires video mode has the potential of causing many more problems for me
(and possibly other people) than it would solve for you.

First I would like to say your projects are excellent and i appreciate all of your efforts. biggrin.gif

I was wondering if you could possibly have it so I could have some secure way to select 1080i.
I've tried avalaunch and xbmc as dashboards to start the emulators and since they are in 1080i when the emulator's start up i can't read them.

The screens are garbled (no doubt because the emulator is trying to send a 480i signal) . Currently I have a printed sheet of paper that tell me the directions to change it to 1080i (e.g. down, down, x, down, down ........) sad.gif

I understand you don't want the modes saved after selection, so is there a line you could have someone like me add in the .xml to force 1080i? Or is that already an option?

Thanks for any reply,
DaFederal

Am I missing something here? Whenever I load the program it works fine, then I go to select game and I choose a game. It says Loading, then in the upper left corner it says State 1. But then nothing happens the screen goes blank and the annoying music keeps playing, it's like it's not even trying to load the game. Do I have some setting wrong? Thanks.
kimota2004
First of all you can change the settings in the configuration menu, go to general settings. You should then switch "Stop BGM before playing game" to yes. The option to auto load your most recent save state is also there.

As for the black screen, it would suggest your games arn't loading correctly, so may I ask what format your games are in (.zip or .bin etc) and what games u are trying to load.

If this happens you should be able to press down on the right controller stick and "exit" out of the game.

I have found that x-port emu's will lock up on bad ZIP files as well. So if the xbox is completely locked the 2nd thing I would do is make sure the zip file is not corrupted.

First of all, thanks for the great emulators. Your work is much appreciated.

Secondly, my feature request. I've always verified my ROMs using Cowering's Good utilities- they work well and provide informative names. Recently, I've noticed the growing popularity of a tool called GoodMerge. As described on the author's site:

"GoodMerge is the ultimate space-saving companion tool to Cowering's Good ROM Renamer suite. It takes a ROM image collection (raw or compressed) and a “*Have.txt” file and produces a number of 7Z, RAR, Ace, or Zip archives with all the files associated with a particular game stored in one file."

I've done this to my Genesis ROM collection (using the 7-zip compression method); it saves a lot of space, and helps with the organization of the ROMs. The obvious downside is that in this state, the ROMs are not accessible using Neogenesis.

My proposal is this: add support for 7-zip files, and have an option to treat each 7-zip file as a directory. This would provide a clean listing of each title you have, and when a title is selected, would give you a listing of the different variations of the title.

Thank you for your time, Xport. Again, your work is very much appreciated.

Anyone know why when I start a game, I hear sound but it slowly diminishes until its mute?

Always hear sound in the beginning and then it gets lower and lower ...

If i leave default BGM on it will continue playing however!!

I'm a little confused on how to get the multitap to work in NeoGenesis. I've never actually managed to get the 3rd and 4th controllers to work in the NBA Jam games. Can somebody explain to me how to get this to work?

Thanks in advance

I am just wondering if there is any plan to add light gun support. It would be great to be able to play lethal enforcers for sega cd with it. thanks

Okay, I'm getting really frustrated here. mad.gif I've been futzing around for 12 hours now, and I just can't seem to do it.

All right, let me tell you what's going on. I have my Sega CD collection right here in front of my Xbox, right? So I pop in Lunar or Sonic CD, and although the games load and run, any time that the game goes to load a new audio track, the game stutters while loading. Obviously there is a seek time issue with the Xbox DVD drive and Sega CD discs. "Well, that's fine," I thought, "I'll just rip the discs to the hard drive."

Boy, what was I thinking?

I've now tried to copy four separate games to CDRWin's cue/bin format. While it seems that the game is completely ripped to the image, I think there's an issue with Gens/NeoGenesis here. When I load the image in NeoGenesis and go to the Sega CD cd player/memory manager, the screen tells me that I've loaded a disc that has ONE track. Huh? One track? Lunar has like 52!

Well, that's what happens if I load the *.bin file. If I load the *.cue file, then the cd player reports the full track list, but cannot access any but the very first track. In fact, the whole system locks up if I attempt to access tracks 2 and up.

Obviously, this is not a good situation.

Basically, how in the world do you make useable images, and how do you use them? beerchug.gif
NineInchNall
Just as an extra piece of information, I think I had resolved the issue with the Windows version of GenS by installing the ForceASPI layer. I had the cue/bin files working last year on GenS, so I know it's possible.

I'm just trying to think of fixes.

sorry for the question, love the emulator and i have read the faq about lack of sega 32x cds being able to play, just curious to see if this is something that is being looked at or overlooked and not worried about. i have a few games from when i owned the system id like to play. thank - smokedout - xport have a drink on me heh beerchug.gif
Shakey_Jake33
I don't think 32XCD is supported by even Windows Gens.
Arkane
I'm having the same problem as NineInchNall with sega cd games. whenever I load the game, it goes to the audio track screen. Is there some special way I'm suppose to load sega cd games?
Shakey_Jake33
I'm probably going to get slaughtered for this request, but is there any chance of adding the abilty to SMB from multiple computers on a network? (Perhaps somewhat similar to XMBC)

My main reason for this is my main PC has some MegaDrive roms, and my brothers PC also has some. Rather than wasting space on our machines by each having the same roms, we just use each others files when we need to.
Now I've set up my SMB so I have full access to my machine... but that still leaves me with no way of accessing my brothers.

Not sure how easy it would be to implement such a feature...
stevey5036
hey xport,

i asked awhile ago if you could implement Kaillera into some of your emulators but i want it in neogenesis most. Kaillera allows people to do online play if your not familiar with it already.
Serebrus
greetings Xport. I have no idea if this is feasible, but if you can, could you enable additional information on games, a la MAME, like Boxart, captures, background info, MANUALS, and the like? Perhaps a PDF or text reader to implement it. You don't need to fill in anything. Let the community do that for you smile.gif

hey guys, i read the faq so please try to avoid flaming.

ok i have the problem where certain roms launched result in the cd player. this only occurs with genesis roms off dvd, and not 32x files or when played off the hard drive.

i think its because the game believes they are 32x games, so they result in the cd player, and it explains why 32x games are fine. is there a way of getting it to recognise these files without having to rename them or zip all of them up?

Multitap(4 controllers) ever going to work?

Games like Columns III dont work. I remember seeing something about this a long time ago, but it seems like it never was worked out? Something with the actual multitap programming that causes the bug?

so there is no way whatsoever i can make the emu distinguish between 32x roms, and genesis roms running off a disc without renaming masses of files or zipping them all?

hey total ass i think i might have solved your problem. I was having the same problem with Night Tap. If you grab xenesis and copy over the bios files to the neogenesis bios folder it should work. There are 3 of them. I am not sure what the bios files names are but just compare them and copy over the ones that aren't there. Also i found out that neogenesis doesnt really like iso files. I had to change them to bin and then they worked. Hope this helps you out.

Hi.
I only want to know, How can I do for Unistall completely from the Xbox's hard disk the Neogenesis Emulator. I mean How can I do for delete all Neogenesis files from my xbox hard disk.

Ah¡¡ only one more thing, in to the General faqs there is an answer about the reset function:

(Q: Where's the reset function? : It's called RTHUMB-Cursor Down-A-A)

But I don't know where does this function is? or How to use it?

Hi guys first post.

I love NeoGenesis but I noticed two bugs. One is a bug with the 1.6 xcalibur chipset.

Small bug: Pointfilter will return to bilinear in the hardware filter setting when you restart the emu, it still says pointfilter is selected but its not, if you choose bilinear nothing changes, then choose pointfilter and the image is much sharper again as it should be.

BIG BUG: 720p screws up the component signal totally on the 1.6, only horrific garble on screen. This happens with one retail game too Panzer Dragoon Orta in 480p and I read on hdtvarcade that it is a problem with the 1.6 chipset being different from previous versions.

720p fortunately so far has worked flawlessly in all the retail games I have tried (several) and neogenesis was the first one to garble it like that sad.gif I was looking forward to getting less scaling errors and sharper picture with the higher res.

Maybe an easy fix, maybe not, maybe add a special xcalibur 720p choice?

Thank you very much.

I'm a noob to this emulator so please excuse me,
I placed all of my .smd roms in the roms folder and qwix my iso, then i burn put it in my xbox and neogensis comes up, even lists my games, however when i select any game, it goes to a black screen and continues playing the music from the main menu, can anyone help me out?

Well, after reading through this entire thread, reading the Neogenesis Faq AND reading the Neogenesis documentation, I am still no closer to an answer. My question is, If I have a gamesave from my PC Gens emulator that I wish to use/transfer over to Neogenesis, how do I accomplish this? Is there some conversion necessary or is it just a matter of FTPing it into the correct directory of my xbox?

thank you for your time and patience. smile.gif

Just curious, did I ask such a dumb question that it does not rate a response? Is there a thread, tutorial or faq somewhere that already covers this? If so I am extremely sorry for the uneductaed question and could someone please be kind enough to direct me to the thread, tut or faq in question?

Thank you for your time and patience.

I was sondering if you would include support for zipped Sega CDs in Bin/Cue format in the future release. Right now it boots up the Sega CD BIOS and then switches into CD Player mode.

Thanks.
