Why would anyone need help to get into the guard during the Vietnam war...

The national guard stays state-side because they are just that -- the NATIONAL guard. The democrats believe that Bush wanted to join national guard in order to dodge the vietnam war.

this whole election race has turned into a "flame war" against bush and kerry to see who can stretch the truth the biggest without acctually lying.

Mystery Surrounds Kerry's Navy Discharge

Looks like Kerry may have been dishonorably discharged from the Navy in/around 1972. Then Kerry was re- "Honorably Discharged" by the Carter administration to provide amnesty to war protestors and help the nation heal in 1978. Medals were reissued to Kerry at this time. Kerry has repeatedly refused to sign Standard Form 180, which would allow the release of all his military records to prove or disprove this claim.

Here is a link to an article regarding the mysterious "honorable discharge" that took place in 1978. (A full 6 years after Kerry's term ended - 1972)
