From what ive gathered by reading here, either the v1.6 boxes cant have a hd upgrade or all Maxtor hard drives cannot be locked.
Ive used xboxhdm and get this error:
Error - this drive does not support the ATA security spec.
I dont want to waste any more time on this if v.16 boxes have to use stock hd.
Anyone?

Yes they can, look harder and make sure your drive is lockable.

I have my cd rom set to master on IDE2, and my hd set to master on IDE1.
Is this ok?
I get through building the hd from scratch (I ftp'ed my xbox C and E folders into my xboxhdm setup along with my eeprom.bin, and created the .iso from that).
Just when i lock the hd, i get the above error.

What type of Maxtor is the drive?
Is it an older drive, like a 40gig?
Most very OLD Maxtor will NOT be LOCKABLE
All FUJITSU drives are NOT LOCKABLE
All Quantum drives are NOT LOCKABLE
-----
I once got that error message on a newer drive, and what I did is after
rebuilding the drive from XBOXHDM, I shutdown the whole power to the
PC completely, waited for two minutes are restarted and rebooted the
CDROM disc, and no error screen the second time around.

yo bro im using a 3 year old maxtor 40 on my 1.6 and it worked fine. only problem is my drive takes a while to load for some odd reason. sometiems it works perfect some times load times like 2 minutes but it sure beats having to pay for games. i used the norton ghost technique and it workd fine

Not all hard drives support locking. plain and simple.
if the hard drive doesnt support locking, it WILL NOT work without a modchip.
If you hard drive does NOT support locking, either get a modchip, or get a hard drive that does support locking, there is a list of compatible drives posted on this forum.

I guess that was my main question:
Does this error:
This drive does not support the ATA security spec
mean that it is not a lockable drive?
