Do you have a router? They come in handy but you can also connect without one.
Your going to need the crossover cable to FTP up your Xbox and PC, look in the XBConnect and Xlink forums, you will find all the info you need.
Here are some links that should be useful
FAQ(heres a mini tut i guess)
Tutorial (not by me)and for Xlink :

Get a router for xbc. I think xbox live you can just hook up your xbox directly to your modem. I just use a router which will work for both.

Read the instructions with the router. Its very easy even if you dont know what your doing. If you get a router, use the straight through cable. You dont need crossover cable unless your hooking up xbox to xbox or xbox to pc.

Ok you want to play Xbox Live
and XBConnect? Do you have a modchip?
FTP tutoiral here-->

That should explain FTP for the most part and howto do it. And to set up your router should be explained in that tut. I think you'll need both cables. And you don't need to unless you are using XLink

Use a router. Turn on DHCP and you'll be ok.
For cabling, straight through cables for everything.

I have almost the same problem, but the difference is, I can FTP the Xbox with FlashXP fine, but I get DNS errors when trying to connect to XBL, that I didn't get before. I haven't changed my Network Setup that i'm aware of. I haven't been on XBL for a while (Addicted to City of Heroes,lol) but last time I checked, I could get on XBL just fine. I have a 2 NIC setup with ICS and a hub.
NIC 1 goes to the Cable Modem and has ICS, NIC 2 goes out to the hub, which is connected to the Xbox. All with CAT 5, as I wanted to be able to hookup my PS2 and the Xbox to the PC. Not to be used at the same time of course. I wanted to be able to be able to access the internet with my PC and XBL at the same time, as well as being able to connect to XBox Connect. My set up worked for the longest, but suddenly I get DNS errors when trying to connect to XBL.
At first I thought I might have been Banned, but when I hook up the Xbox to the cable modem directly, I can get on with no problem.
I'm hoping it's just the settings in ICS being messed up. It isn't my firewall, Im using Kerio, and it was configured to let XBL through, but even with it disabled, I still get DNS errors.
PLEASE HELP!

I've also got that problem using my current router, and it didn't do it before on my first router. After reading xbox.com's FAQ's and some other FAQ's on other sites, I think the problem may just be our routers. Some simply wont work with XBL.
