Yes I'm back. Anyways, I've heard talk of using an external hard drive. I have a 200 gig hd I put in a case I know has firewire and may or may not have an ethernet port. Could I use this as an external hd for my xbox?
Thx in advance
Ps wut format should I use if I was to use this drive for my xbox?

No, you can't.

I know that there is an adapter from the xbox port to a female usb port so i was wondering if it would be possible to hookup and external usb hard drive with backup games to the xbox and have the xbox actually be able to play the games off that hard drive

i think what he means is...
it'll only work when you are WITHIN linux on your XBOX (if then). In a similar way you can have a keyboard and mouse plugged in, but they will only work when you are in the linux OS, not during gameplay
Why not just put a stonking big HDD in the XBOX anyway?

It seems like alot of work to get a bigger HD locked and all that crap to make it work correctly with the xbox if u know of a program that if i put a hard drive in my pc it would lock it and all that stuff without me doin much then that would be sweet

The latest evox can lock/unlock hdd with the push of a button.
Is that easy enough?
Mr Ed
May 14 2004, 01:01 AM
Yeah, but he asked about locking/unlocking AND "all that crap"....is there "an all that crap" button? Or will he still have to do "all that crap" manually?

nice one mr. ed. well i guess i should make it clearer for everyone. I modded my xbox using the mechassault exploit and not a modchip as of yet. So to my knowledge i have to do alot of stuff to a pc hard drive to be able to make the xbox think that it is ok. Also i am using the newest version of evox but im not familiar with the unlock/lock option you are talkin about cromat44 but that might only be a feature in the modchip version or somethin so let me know exactly what it is I have to do cuz i do have a spare 20gig HD lying around my room somewhere and would like to do this mod if its not to difficult

Tutorial for no mod HD replacement:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?act=ST&f=44&t=98806IMO, you should just do a TSOP flash or buy a mod chip if you want to painlessly install a new hd. There is no easy all-in-one program for softmodded xboxes.

Eh,
Mod or TSOP flash the Xbox, if it is not already.
Place new hard drive in it.
Boot Slayers 2.5 Final.
Hit, PREPARE NEW HD.
Wait 4-5 minutes.
Remove disk.
"All that crap" has been done.
Your Xbox is now populated with applications, media players, utilities.
It's about as simple as it gets.

if i were to add an external hardrive via a usb port on the xbox, would i be able to save applications and stuff just like an internal one, or would it be too slow, or would i even be able to access it via avalaunch, xbmc, or any other dashboard?

i thought only two devices could be hooked up to the motherboard. i.e dvd drive + 1 hard drive.
xbackups
Jul 7 2004, 04:06 PM
you might be able to format it as the g: drive to have evox read from it, like it will read the g: partition on an internal drive. i'm not really sure about it though

No, it will not work. Any USB device will be recognized as a memory card. If you want an external drive, you have to use an internal IDE drive and make it external by following one of the tutorials for bringing it outside the case.

oh thats too bad, im too scarred to try to putting in an internal drive; can any current application write to a memory card, because i dont think it wuold be to hard to do if it sees it as a memorycard and can just right anything to it, because the xbox dash can only write gamesaves to a memorycard

if i only had sum basic knowledge of creating software for the xbox

Would anyone know if it is possible to get a Lacie 160 gb usb 2 external device to work on a xbox i know it should be possible with the xbox running Linux.
Also Another question would anyone know of a program like dvdshrink for xbox and if it is possible to install a dvd burnier pioneer 106 to a xbox and use the xbox to copy and burn dvd's would like something like dvdshrink as it allows you to select the compression on selected parts of the dvd do not know how you would go about burning the image when completed.

Yes running Linux you can do this. But you won't be able to play XBOX games once you've converted it to a Unix computer.

You might be able to do this if you convert your XBOX to Unix, but there are no XBOX apps or ways of doing this. In order to convert to UNIX you would lose all game playing abilities and the ability to read/backup an XBOX game disc.

Is it possible to take and USB external Hard Drive and plug that into a USB controller adapter and use that for extra storage for backing up games on your Xbox?
Trevante
Aug 21 2004, 11:35 PM
No. And even if you could, the Xbox would only recognize it as a memory card, and you can't launch apps from mem cards, so you'd have to transfer back and forth, which wouldn't be worth it.
You can only use IDE/EIDE HDD's in the Xbox.

No, and even if it were, the Xbox ports are USB1.1, so it would not be practical for use of an ext. HDD.

Yes it is possible to use an external drive on the xbox but not how you wany to use it.
You would also need to be running linux on your xbox for it to be possible.

does anyone know if its possible to save and load game backups from a drive connected to a controller port USB converter? I have the Xenium ice chip, and I know that I was able to load files from a USB dongle, but it would be convenient to be able to add a second harddrive this way. Anyone know if this will work??

Does anyone know if this is possible: Use an external harddrive connected to the XBox through the USB/controller port converter, which the XBox will assign a folder letter, lets say X: . Now, if I do this, can I set it up so that I backup games to this folder and create a X:games/ folder and/or X:apps/ folder so Avalaunch, or XBMC, or EvoX Dash can boot games from this drive?
Would I have to enable the X: drive in the .ini files of the dashes etc??
This would be a very cheap way to swap out drives once you reach capacity.
Thanx 4 any help.

ok, I tried something out just to see if its possible, but I realized that a USB Flash drive probably isnt formatted correctly for the XBox to see.
When I plugged in the USB Flash drive, it was assigned Drive letter H:. So I added an entry in the evox.ini file to look for games there:
AutoAddItem "h:\games\"
but I can not see the H: drive from Avalaunch's file manager. Does anyone know if there is a way to make a drive plugged into the USB/Controller port available?

I was wondering if I could load some backups onto my iPod, hook it up to my XBox using a USB cable, then using boxplorer, go into the iPod drive, find the default.xbe file and launch it directly from the iPod. It would be good if this is possible because then I could just put games on my iPod since I only use about 4Gb of it for music the other 14 can be for games. Thanks in advance. Any help would be great.

No because USB harddrives are not supported right now due to lack of drivers. EvolutionX was looking into it.

Ok, I understand the answer is "no you cannot hook up external harddrives to play games" b/c once you launch the game there is no longer support for the drive, they are too slow, etc. Everyone talks like you can hook up a thumb drive or usb harddrive to be detected as memory card though, and my question is if I can use an external harddrive with movies loaded on it to be played in XBMC. If XBox will detect USB HDs as memory cards, what will keep it from reading movies off of the "memory card"? I don't have an xbox usb converter, but I want to start a movie collection with XBMC and my internal 160GB is full of games. Could an external HD be used for this purpose assuming it only contains media to be played? Thank you in advance.
