Yellow: Case
Red: Controller Ports
Cyan: A/V, Ethernet, Power plugs
Green: Motherboard
Gray: DVD Drive
Magenta: HDD
Dark Yellow: PSU
Height: 16"
Width: 13.5625"
Length: 13.625"
Think of it as a four story Xbox.
This is my basic design. Quite simply, it is 4 Xboxs stacked on top of each other, one facing North, one East, one South, one West for the ultimate LAN station. A total of four controllers could be plugged into each side. Corresponding AV, Ethernet, and Power plugs would be on the opposite side. I was also thinking of possibly putting a router in the case as well and hardwire all four boxes to it.
It is still in need of cooling because how I have it drawn up things would be rather tight so additional cooling would definately be needed. I was thinking a large 80mm or so fan in between each set of controller ports, blowing in or out and then a smaller fan directly across from the controller port fan blowing out. That would be a total of 8 fans.
Yup... if anyone has some Xbox parts to donate I would love to make this but until I get some cash this is where it sits.
Let me know what you guys think, comments, suggestions, etc.

EDIT
idea I just had, add a power strip in your design so you just have to plug in one cord

that looks like a cool idea, but u do kno u need 4 tvs, and ur gona need to cram all 4 together on top of the lan box.
but other than that i really like the idea

what i would suggest, if you intend to have this as a "hub" in the center of your lan set up, is to have you controller ports AND the av/power plugs on the same side. if you have this behind a tv, it will be much easier to plug inthe cords direct in a straight line, rather than it going around to the back where a different set of controller ports would be. hope that makes sense. i guess what i'm saying is all of xbox 1 ports (controller power and otherwise) all in one side, same with xbox 2, and so on.

I get what you're saying, I never thought about doing it like that, good idea.
Also, about the internal power strip, I thought of that as well but I was also wondering if it is possible to connect all four PSUs together somehow, maybe splice them all into one line and have say... just an extension cord hanging out of the box. Is that possible?

Get 16 wireless airflo controllers and 16 wireless headsets so everyone can play xbox live!!!

Dec 27 2004, 04:07 PM
get 4 flat panel LCDs and mount them to the top... then everyone could just sit around it and bang away on their controller on their side of the box...

sp3cialk, I thought about that but 16 guys wouldn't want to sit that close. Plus that would cost so much more money and that would make the overall size of the LAN box larger, but it would make it totally portable.

Very True... Just thought I'd throw out that for a suggestion for people saying where are you gonna put the tvs???? You could always get like PSone screens... might be able to find 4 of those cheap on the net somewhere.... and have a Hub internal so that if you were to hook it to the internet you would only need 1 ethernet cable the boxes inside would already be linked up....

yea i agree with sp3cialk i would only have one powe cord goin out and one ethernet cable goin out and i would mount 4 lcd screens (computer) on top

You should put a hip pad screen on each side just to see what each box is doing at a glance. That would be really cool. Not to play on just for the visual effect and being able to use them all without hooking each up to a TV.

As I already said I am planning on putting a router in the case. Maybe I'll ditch the DVD drives and just hook up 4 HDDs, that would give me much more room.
I also asked, for those that know, if it was possible to say... splice the four power cables together and then just have one coming out of the case to power it. Would that work?

Just a suggestion with everyone talking about the LCD's if you do this just get some 13.1" LCD screens i'll do a drawing of how they would work when i get back from work tonight so check back on this thread in about 13 hours lol. And it will be autocad no some cheap ass paint uncomprehendable pile.

The thing about the LCD screens that I like is that the ONLY thing that would be coming out of the case are of course controllers and one power cable.
The bad part is cost. I mean if anyone has any spare parts that they don't plan on using, I'd be glad to take them off your hands but if it all comes out of my pocket I can see this taking a few months to take shape. I just wanted to annouce my idea and see if there was any interest in it.

That's why suggested something like PSone screens... but it's just a suggestion... on the power cable thing...get a good trip-light surge protector (or better yet a APC UPS) and put it in the case... then cut the end off of the part you plug into the wall and go down to radio whack and get the connectors like the one on the back of your computer... wire it up and mount it... then you have one cable and if you put the ups in you could actually have a portable station... not very long but if the power died you could maybe save the game or something...

Don't bother with power strips and all that junk. Just wire all the power supplies up to a common input point somewhere and use a larger guage wire than the stock Xbox power cable. This is essentially what a power strip does anyways so it will not do any harm unless you hook up the wires wrong somehow...

I think that one of your major problems is and will be "Where to put all of the wires?" I know that is what I would be saying. You would have one AV cable comming out of the sides. I think that is going to be one of your battles with this. But it is a great Idea.
Just was looking at your pic again and this thing will not be like a rectangular box it is going to be a more like a say 14"x14"x16".

I was already talking about doing that and just having one cord coming from the box that would be connected to each PSU.

If LCDs get mounted to the box the A/V cables are then out of the question, if they don't there would be one A/V cable coming from each side as well as up to four controllers. I don't think that would be too cluttered.

BTW, what are the average prices on LCD screens about 13"?
What about PSOne screens, and the size?

since the xbox av cable isnt that long you should hardwire some a/v outputs to it so you can use standard (longer) RCA cables... not hard to do, or expensive...

ummm, if you mount in the LCDs then you've got something else to think about. Speakers, that's going to be a lot more wires. so like, you'd need the speakers then you would also want headphone jacks too. or just headphone jacks. probably want four per xbox too. just in case you actually do get 16 guys together for something like this.
Sound.. you need sound man.
