Okay here is my faq part of the basics thread. I figured this might be too long to add and the absence of the edit feature made me decide to just put it in a new thread.

The intention of this thread is to provide answers to the most common questions where starting or even more novice people may struggle with. (and hopefully reduce the amount of repeated questions that come up every day)
This FAQ is not intended to provide direct instructions of installations and/or upgrades. I will however in some cases add links to where people may find such info. If those links are not provided you can allways use certain keywords to continue your search in the pinned topics on top of the screen (all the nescesary info is there!) or use the forums search function.
I'll divide it up in different sections so it might be easier to locate the question you are looking for. Since some q's can fit into different sections it may also be wise to look in other sections if you can't directly find it.

If anyone has more input or sugestions please feel free to reply although with the lack of edit possibilities I won't be able to update it that much.

XBE EXPLOITS

What is the best exploit?
Most popular exploit nowadays is the UXE since it has no restrictions to any regions or kernel numbers.

How do I install UXE?
There are various ways to install exploits/softmods
- use a gamesave exploit to gather ftp acces and ftp over the files manually.
- use a gamesave exploit that starts up an automated installer (ltools, waffletools)
- hotswap and put in the files with programs that can edit the xbox hd (xboxhdm)

What are clock loops?
A clock loop is a sort of bug/system crash that occurs when using older font exploits and the xbox is unplugged for an amount of time so that the clock will loose time. It makes the xbox trying to load to the clock settings menu and then crashes since it cannot reach it's own font files causing a continuous reboot.
THE UDE(2) or UXE DOES NOT SUFFER FROM THIS BUG.

My xbox is in a clock loop what do I do?
You can try to hook it up to a network and/or put in scratched audio cd's and leave it on trying to let the xbox sort it out by itself eventually but in some cases the xbox will never get out of the loop. Then hotswapping or installing a chip might be a solution.

I installed UDE(2)/UXE and now my xbox hangs at the logo screen
This happens quite frequently. Here's a quote from the fonts readme file
QUOTE
If you have done everything ABSOLUTELY CERTAINLY CORRECT (triple checked,
and triple installed) so far, and it still doesn't work (freezes in the big X
logo and white MS text under it), you may have one of the rare Xboxes that
need additional steps:

10. Copy s.xtf to C:\fonts\s.xtf  (if you already didn't)

Still not working:

11. Copy s.xtf also to C:\fonts\s2.xtf

Still not working:

12. Copy s.xtf also to C:\fonts\s3.xtf
It is also recomended that you put the dashboard language setting to english

I installed UDE(2)/UXE and now I see a screen that says it's updating my dash and then cannot connect to xbox live
Your xbox still can reach it's original font files. meaning you didn't rename the fonts folder to f0nts (or whatever) or the new fonts folder doesn't contain the hacked fonts and the file takes the fonts from the root.

The exploit I'm trying to load says it will load a habibi signed xbe. what does that mean?
The exploit changes the signature key in the xbox memory so it will accept a key that can easily be produced by people other than M$. The signature most used with current exploits is the habibi key. Most bios loaders and kernel patchers are presigned with the habibi key. If you alter something in the xbe it breaks the key and it needs to be signed again.

What program is used for signing xbe's?
The program used for signing is called xbedump.

When I try to trigger my audio hack it says something like maximum amount of soundtracks reached.
Your dashboard is too new to use the audio hack. The only dash that was audio exploitable was the 4920 dashboard. With the introduction of the UDE and later exploits the audio hack became obsolete and is hardly used anymore.

When a game (accidentaly) updates my dashboard will that screw up my exploit/xbox?
The files used to update the dashboard use the font files from the xbox hd. With the UDE like exploits the fonts are replaced with hacked fonts therefore the xbox will crash or error before any dashupdate is done. So there is no way (for now) that dashboard can accidentally be upgraded.

When I try to run some OXM or official double game discs it gives me an error 21. How is that possible?
The game uses the same font files as the exploit (see question above) making the system crash.
To fix this you can install the new nkpatcher with virtual C drive. You can then change the virtual C to replace the retail fonts back and the games will work again without problems.

BIOS LOADERS AND KERNEL PATCHERS

Why does my xbox only diplays 137 gigs of space while I know my hd is much bigger
The bios or kernelpatcher you are using doesn't support lba-48 or you haven't turned on additional partitions isn your dash (G drive). If lba-48 is not supported you can upgrade the bios or kernel patcher. There are different ways to divide the additional space. Either all on F or 137 on F and the rest on G.

When I press both triggers+both thumbsticks my xbox resets during a game. What's up with that?
The bios you are using has IGR (in game reset) enabled on both triggers and thumbsticks. You can upgrade your bios to a version that haven't got that combination or edit the bios to turn it off completely. When upgrading the latest pbl metoo/evox m8 bios is recomended for bios loaders and bios but if you wanna use the best stuff around upgrade to the newest nkpatcher with it's shadow features.

How do I upgrade my bios?
The bios can be located along the bios loader. it usually points to c:\evoxdash.xbe by default. if your dash is not located there you need to edit it with either evtool for evox bioses or xbtool for x2 bioses to point to the right dash location.

How do I upgrade my nkpatcher?
If you located you kernel patcher you can place the new kernel patcher in that same location. Again the default dash location is c:\evoxdash.xbe. If your dash is not there either put it there or change the path in the nkpatcher. Remember you need to resign nkpatcher after you edited it.

What are virtual C drives or virtual eeproms
Virtual C and virtual eeprom are two new features in the newest nkpatcher. It uses a secondary C partition and eeprom leaving your originals protected. It is also possible to "unmod" your virtual C so games that need the fonts to be in place (auto updating discs and some double gamediscs) actually have acces to their fonts.

GAMESAVE EXPLOITS

I'm trying to load a gamesave and it gives me an error 21
either the save is not on the hd or the save your trying to load is unsigned or damaged in some way. Action replay cards are known to corrupt saves and letting you boot to error 21. Original mem cards supose the be the securest way to transfer saves

I'm trying to get Krayzie UXE Installer onto my AR mem card but it says it's too big. How's that possible?
Well AR makes crappy mem cards that do not only corrupt the saves in like 60 % of the cases but also they sell 8 MB mem cards that can't even fit a 7 MB save.
You could trim down the save a bit by extracting it and delete some evox skins. Mke sure you zip it up exactly the way it was though.

I don't have the save on my hd anymore and now my xbox won't boot. What can I do?
There is no way you can load the save directly of the mem card you will have to open up the case and acces the hd with a pc or another (hardmodded)xbox. If you have the eeprom backup this won't be too hard, if you don't have that info you need to hotswap.

How do I get my saves on the mem card?
there are various ways for that. Either through another modded xbox, an action replay or similar device or creating some kind of USB memory adapter.

What is ltools or waffletools
Both are exploited gamesaves that will load up some software that will install an exploit for you along with some other options. these are intended for people feeling very insecure about doing things manually or are just lazy.

HARDDISKS

Why is my hd locked and do I need to unlock it?
The locking issue is a security feature M$ has put in the xbox. It prevents you from taking your hd and put it in another xbox. Locking has NOTHING to do with being able to add software to the hd. Never just try to unlock your hd. Each hd is locked with a password that can only be unlocked by the xbox with the right key which is located in the eeprom.

What is hotswapping
Hotswapping is a way to unlock the hd by letting it boot in the right xbox and then connecting the ide port to another device like a pc. More info can be found here

Can I install a bigger hd and how
Most popular is XBOXHDM. It will let you set up a new hd in a pc.
There are also other ways without a pc like with another (hardmodded) xbox or with the xbox alone.

GENERAL

Can I go live with softmods?
It is possible but requires you to place back certain key files so that the xbox will boot to an unmodded state. You will need a gamesave exploit afterwards to change the files back.

I heard that if I boot with a game inside the drive the xbox will boot up retail and I can go live safely.
That's true.

I upgraded my hd and now some of my games freeze or won't work at all anymore?
This is a common problem lately due to xboxhdm leaving files in the cache that interfere with some games. To get rid of the problem delete the contents of E:\cache, X, Y and Z

All these people talk about "usual places". Where are they?
#xbins

My msdash isn't working anymore after using UDE(2)/UXE.
When installing such an exploit the main dashboard file and the fonts are replaced.
To make it working again you can make a COPY of the original xboxdash.xbe file and hex edit that to locate the original font files (usually change fonts to f0nts).
If you used the UXE complete package the whole msdash is removed and if you insist in getting it back you need to put back all the dash files and do the hex editing mentioned above. Remember changing the language to something other then english can make your exploit stop working.

What is dual boot?
Dual boot is booting different programs/software depending on the tray state. for example boot evox with the power button and boot avalaunch with the eject button.

How do I get rid of dual booting?
The easiest thing is to edit the ernie font file to look directly for the bios loader instead of the dualboot.xbe.

How do I edit the fonts or any other asm sources?
This is a nice tutorial for that. You could also use this tut for example nkpatcher but remember to resign it afterwards. You could also use DaddyJ's tools to edit the ernie font.

I installed an exploit but now my screen is all scrambled.
You are probably trying to load a bios that is not compatible with your video encoder. PBL metoo/evox M8 package or Nkpatcher are highly recomended since they work on every xbox.

I have no game or memory card can I still install an exploit?
Yes you could hotswap

I'm using hddriver but it keeps giving me errors
Don't use that program. It's crap.

Why do many people say exploits are bad?
Exploits are ways to mod without a profitable base. Therefore exploits are highly critisized by people who make money selling modchips and mostly the criticism is based on false or outdated arguments. Exploits have evolved to a secure and safe way to mod your xbox no matter what some people may tell you.

Can I change my boot logo colors with softmods?
No. the patching or replacing of the bios is done after the retail bios has loaded which controlls the logo screens.

thanks alot for the guide, i wish there were some guides like this when i first started softmodding, then i wouldnt ask as much n00b questions.

I still learnt a little reading it all.

Sorry, i still have a question, i installed I installed UDE(2) on a new 160gb hd. evox menu boots ok, but i only have C D E X Y Z drives. utilizing 8gb. my f: is missing, i formatted it with xboxhdm to max capacity. shouldn't i at least see 137gb???

i have no mod chip. didnt touch the motherboard. i've been trying all night to update my bios with phoenix b/c i thought that was my problem. but everytime i try to load any bios, it keeps giving me blank black screens or crashing into a scrambled green MS dashboard screen.

is this a bios problem, or what's wrong with my system? why is there no F: with the basic UDE2 package?

Try turning the F drive on in the Evox Settings menu.

I dunno what the ude2 package contains but i thought that was nkpatcher. The nkpatcher included probably didn't support lba 48 so you should see at least 137 gigs. Are you sure you turned on your F drive in the dash?

edit: hmmm I should reply faster nex time wink.gif
morningla
i remember my old dash, before i upgraded to this 160gb hd had an option to turn on F:, but this one doesn't have that option in Settings. what's wrong?
krayzie
well what dash are you using and why aren't trying another one.
morningla
HOLY crap you are right, i am such an idiot, i spent 5 hrs trying to update the BIOS. but what i did wrong.... was exactly what you said

Select Yes to use F drive.
OMG i thought i remember this option settings near the top of the menus.... but it was at the bottom. everything works fine now. You are right and i was wrong. There was an option to turn on the F drive. (as well as G:)

Thanks, if only i asked before trying to update my bios 5 hrs ago. Thank you for you quick reply.
Aethyr
Alter your Evox.ini file to look like this then you will have added an option to format the F drive. Save an original of the evox file ftp and put it back that way you won't accidentally reformat your F drive.
Here is what it should look like.

krazie, you just might wanna add how to change the dashboard. I see too many people posting this question and it's pissing me off! grr.gif

Krazie, Thanks for the thread. It is very useful. Here I have a question.

I turned on G drive in Evox. It only shows 0 available space.
I used UDE(2) nkpecher
my xbox is 1.6
my HD is 250G.

F drive is ok with about 120G available. Is it because xboxhdm 1.9 only can build F: drive (option 4) but not G: drive? Is there some way that I can get the lost space in my HD back.

Thank you in advance.

The bios or kernelpatcher you are using doesn't support lba-48 or you haven't turned on additional partitions isn your dash (G drive). If lba-48 is not supported you can upgrade the bios or kernel patcher. There are different ways to divide the additional space. Either all on F or 137 on F and the rest on G.

it could also be you have to reformat partititions

You can go live just fine. it's just that goin live by booting from a gamediscs is not recomended anymore altough some people claim to still do that every day. i don't use live so I can't say anything about it. There are still no definite answers to the live bannings.

Hey Guys,

I've been reading thru the forums and tutorials but I'm obviously missing something because I still can't get my gdrive to show up. 8 hours of searching and still nothing.

If anyone could provide a helping hand I'd really appreciate it.

I have a v1.6 XBOX. I used the hotswap trick and xboxhdm 1.9 to get UXE installed on the retail drive. From there I used xboxhdm to install and partion my 250 gig drive.

It's my understanding that UXE71 comes with nkpatcher which is why I can see that my kernal is at version 1.00.5838.01 (I'm hoping this version supports LBA48). But The BIOS Version shown in the settings menu says Unknown.

Why isn't evox able to detect the BIOS version? I'm guessing that this is the what is holding me back from seeing my G: drive. I don't have PBL installed and I couldn't find any info on how to link that with the UXE.

I've already gone to the settings menu and told evox that it should look for the gdrive and i've added this to evox.ini to try to format it ...

But I still can't see the gdrive using boxplorer 0.96 (the f drive shows 123.408 free) and in the evox settings menu the free space on the g drive is 0. Should I be formatting f instead?

Thanks in advance,

DaddyJ
Not sure about the version of nkpatcher that is included with that package, but unless it is not v9 or higher, then LBA48 is not supported.

It can be configured to ways.

In 06 setup the F will take the rest of the drive from gig 9 - end of drive.

In 67 setup the F will take up gig 9 - gig 137, and G will take from gig 138 to the rest of the drive.

Those #'s repersent the partition the xbox see's then drive at, Partition 6 = F, 7 = G.

The same naming convention is also used with the BIOS file names, but if using NKPatcher, you dont have to worry about any BIOS files.

So if you prolly need to update your nkpatcher, then reformat the F to get all your space. A G drive is not really needed, unless your hard disk is over 300 gigs, (Sometimes data corruption can occur if the F is bigger than 250gigs, I never had a problem, but have read of some)
buddy90210
DaddyJ - I think you're right.

The UXE I had came with nkpatcher 8.

Unforunately foolish me thought I could just do the following and it would work
COPY C:\xboxdash.xbe (the evox dash) to c:\evoxdash.xbe (cuz in nkpatcher10, it says the default location to look for the dash would be evoxdash.xbe) and replace my nkpatcher with the new one.

WRONG. I got error "21" ... back to restoring my new hard drive!

Thoughts on what I should have done?

ohmy.gif Whut were you thinking, XboxDash.xbe is the special update.xbe that loads the fonts, then the fonts point to NKPatcher, then NKPatcher loads the evoxdash.xbe.

QUOTE(buddy90210)

Normally this would be fine.

Hmm error 21, did the xboxdash.xbe still exist, usually error 21 is a result of un-signed code detected. Did you compile NKPatcher yourself, if so you need to -habibi signe it with xbedump.
If you didnt re-compile it, and used the one that was already compiled, then I'm turning back to the xboxdash.xbe, after you renamed it to evoxdash.xbe, was there another xboxdash.xbe present?

buddy90210
Hee hee, good learning experience!

I didn't rename C:\xboxdash.xbe to C:\evoxdash.xbe, I copied it to that name. So both binaries are identical and exist in the same root folder.

I didn't recompile nkpatcher, I'm not sure how to do that. But now that you mentioned it, I'll probably have to do that and point it to C:\fonts\dashboard\default.xbe (hopefully this is evox!)

DaddyJ
by default it points to c:\evoxdash.xbe, and your saying this is the special update.xbe which is basically causing the error.

Replace the evoxdash.xbe with a real evox dash.
buddy90210
Sweeeet. I'm up and running with the 250 Gig HD! Thanks to DaddyJ - you d'man!

I decided to take your suggestions to heart and turf the default UXE (nkpatcher and evox portions of the) setup and install nkpatch 10 and the real evox 3935.

Thanks again for the hand holding!

Remember changing the language to something other then english can make your exploit stop working.

right, i just read about this one and i have same prob here. can't get access to ms dash after using uxe. everytime i choose msdash, always back to xbmc. i know i need to hex editing. but what is hex editing ? and is there a tutorial how to hex editing ms dash back so i can get access to ms dash again ?
thanks

1.5 Xbox
Retail HHD
PAL

1.6 XBOX
Retail HDD
PAL

Im after some help with softmodding as i am totally new.

Will UXE work for me, if it will what auto-installers can i use(keep in mind that im PAL)

Also just another thing that crossed my mind, in a softmod doesnt it load a bios, eg. EvoX M8. Therefor if i use an auto installer. Wouldnt it install the wrong bios on 1 of my boxes or something. I am completly new. hope some1 will guide me in the right direction. Thanks Again.

yes, uxe will work...if you want to use an auto installer then i suggest you use blackwar's installer or waffletools. both will install UXE and a bios that will work on both of your xboxes (or a kernel patcher which will also work and is basically the same thing). you could also look into UXE complete for a more manual way of installing UXE and a kernel patcher. all will work and there are tutorials about all of them so search around and you'll find what you need.

So with something like WaffleTools or Softmod Installer Deluxe 2.0.

It will install UXE on any box.

My question is, do these packages load on a hacked bios. If it does and for instance Softmod INstaller Deluxe 2 loads on the EvoX M8+
which is a 1.5 bios. will that work on my 1.6 box.

Im just confused because it says it works on all xbox's known to man.

m8 isn't a 1.5 bios. It works on all current kernels although it's a bit outdated. You better go for an installer with nkpatcher10
X3-Sniper-X
So this M8+ will work on both 1.5 and 1.6?

What installers have nkpatcher10??????
krayzie
again the M8 bios works on any xbox. Blackwar's installer seem to install nkpatcher 10 and not to forget mine.
X3-Sniper-X
Which installer is better and more easy ( for a n00b like me ) ?????

Also where can i download these installers?
loumicky2002
can someone let me know (asap as getting my xbox tommorrow) if i use the uxe softmod using hotswap method from my pc will i still need to use ma or 007 or splinter cell or will it work without them. If not is there any exploit that will work with the hotswap method without using any of the afore mentioned games as i can only get my hands on the platinum versions here.
DaddyJ
The purpose of hotswapping is to install the exploit without using the gamesaves.

Hello, got a question..couldn't find it on the boards .I recently did a soft mod install on my 1.6 xbox, using krayzies installer. Everything works fine, my G partition shows and everything but my question is...

How do i edit the menu?!? I used auto installer to install emulators, but it's not showing up on the menu...also...if i put games on the G drive, but the games folder is on the F drive. Will i still be able to go to the game menu from the dashboard and play games form the G drive?

Any help would be great! thanks
itzcarlooo
oh yea, forgot to add. I'm using unleash x, also can i change the dashboard to slayers???????
IIOIOOIOO
It's as if your mind were a blackhole.

Though it might be useful to point out that most dashboards have a conspicuously named CONFIGURATION file for setting most of the functionality parameters.
krayzie
there is no dashboard called slayers. If you want to edit the correct paths for your setup you can edit the the xml or ini file for your dash.
itzcarlooo
sorry, just heard from a friend he had a slayers dashboard. I got everything to work, the emulators and games are now showing up on the menu. But now, when I try to play a game, the intro loads but then the game itself freezes or doesn't load at all. One of the games loaded once, and it said invalid id or something? I copied these games from my computer hard drive, that was on my friends xbox. Could it be the xml file? the item and config files? The only game that is working is the game that I had originally loaded onto the system which was on the xboxhdm disc...which was soul calibur 2, all the other games won't load.. sad.gif
