1. Does the chip have to be enabled for me to ftp into it ?
2. What is the bank switch for

3. No, you can boot without the game, do whatever within the dashboard, then when ready, insert the game and launch it.

All i get when i boot is the FlashBIOS 3.0.3 with a load of options to enable flash networking,load BIOS from hdd whats that all about i just wana play a backed up game any ideas ?

You'll need a new bios. Read the tuts about flashing bioses and the usual places.

read the total n00b guide to everything in the tutorials section. But pretty much,
1.) download a bios and a dashboard and a evox boot disk and xbtools
2.) edit the bios so that it knows the path you will put the dash in
3.) flash the chip with the bios
4.) put in boot disk, ftp into xbox hdd, place dash files in correct directory
5.) boot dash set up ftp and put what ever programs you want
6.) any other questions, use the search button or read tutorials.

whats the best bios to update with ?

That depends on your mobo. If it's a v1.6, you'll have to use the Evox M8_16

For anything else you can use the X2 4983 - 256k

Of course you'll read the tuts and know to resize the bios for the other banks right?
