My friend is planning to get the 6600 gt (agp version) , his Power Supply says that it puts out 269 watts max, here is his specs:
Sony Vio RX-850
Pentium 4 2.4ghz
512MB PC2100 RAM
Floppy
DVD Drive
CD Drive
Hes run a Radeon 9600 pro in there before. The website for the 6600 gt says that it needs 300 watts, will it work? Thanks!

i would think not but try it and tell use what happens

really though i would say go ahead and upgrade the psu i mean im guessing that he is probably going to do more upgrades anyways that and its sounds like that stuff would already have it maxed

umm if it says it needs 300 watts, and you have 269 watts, then think about it

Some of the larger PSU's are not only larger in wattage, but larger in size. And if his budget prohibits him from wanting to upgrade the PSU int he first place, I doubt he's going to go all out and get the 600. I have a 540 watt gorgeous power supply powering two cold-cathode tubes, front temperature display, 7 fans, two hard drives, two optical drives, the Radeon, and my Athlon XP.

Ugh, you need at least 550w to use a 6800GT, and the GPU's ain't a whole lot different, so I would go for a 600w, for the hell of it. At least you can be confident it'll work.

Really? That seems excessive. I search NVidia's website, and google, and can't substantiate this.

WRONG - You only need a 300w to run a 6800GT.
I'm running a XFX 6800GT on an Antec Tru Power 350w PSU with no problems at all.
You only need a high wattage PSU if you are running lots of high drain internal components (ie. multple hard disks & fans & internal lighting)

my guess is is that he has alot of stuff and needed the wattage so that was the only way he could run the 6800 with all of his stuff so just stop dawgin the guy he is just trying to help now can we all get back on topic please

Actually we are on topic. The topic is whether or not you need a certain ammount of wattage for a high end Nvidia card. I'm pretty sure a 350 watt power supply will suffice if his system doesn't have extra hard drives, 5 fans, etc.

According to Nvidia the 6800 Ultra draws a total of 110 watts. When you throw in hard drives (which draw allot at startup) and then the other components into the mix you can see why a big PSU is suggested.
Nvidia suggest the use of a 480 watt PSU paired with a 6800 Ultra so the GT should be close behind. According to Nvidia the 6800 Ultra draws a total of 110 watts. http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/2...ce_6800-06.htmlBut if you know anything about design then you know about a Bell curve. I am betting that the 480 watt PSU is on the right side of that curve.

I was just thinking about my system and if I had enough wattage.
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
A-Bit n57-s2g
AMD Athlon XP 2400+
512mb 2100 DDR Ram
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
2 Green Cold Cathodes
DVD-Burner
7200 RPM WD 80 GB HDD
do you think 450 is enough.

If that is what you currently have and it works leave it alone I say.

It's working pretty well right now. I don't think Ill add anything more except maybe a fan controller and some led fans.

That PSU may look nice, but it has unstable rails. Maximum PC just did reviews and they gave it like a 3 or 4 out of 10. So, while it may look nice, I wouldn't buy one. They had problems with the PC complelty crashing when using an Ultra PSU. Its funny, because Ultra probably pays Maximum PC alot of money for the large ad they always have on the back of the magazine.

i almost got one but for $20 less i got a 600 Watt instead of only 500 and it was cheaper plus i wont have to buy a new psu when all of the new tech comes out that needs more power so im kinda set to upgrade away

EDIT: oh and its still an ultra with black titanium finish and blue lights oh and a window on each side

Well, it is a Sony, so I dont know if sony uses atx or not. Anyways, the 6800 uses 2 molex, while the 6600 uses 1, so why wouldnt it work?
nightracer352
Jan 5 2005, 02:08 AM
its not the amount of conections its the wattage it draws it will still draw the same amout of wattage even if it is on 2 diff molex plugs which means the psu is still experiencing the same draw as it would if it only used a single connection
EDIT: and most neweer pc's are atx well atleast from my experience
KingViper
Jan 5 2005, 02:57 AM
It is very possible the sony case is not atx. Also, my 6800gt only uses 1 molex.

thats why i said most not all
and it does not matter the number of conections as i said before it still draws the same wattage

This is the PSU I use, except mine is black.
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-148-002&depa=0It has 8 4-pin molex connectors, and I split a few of those because I have so many fans, lights, etc. I have no problems with it.
It's a little big, and I had to move one of my internal fans to the outside of the case because of it.
nightracer352
Jan 5 2005, 04:18 AM
how big is your case
enderandrew
Jan 5 2005, 04:35 AM
17"x7.8"x16.7"
There was a fan in the case that blew air out the top behind the power supply. When I put in the larger power supply, I had to move the fan.

Jan 5 2005, 05:05 AM
oh isn't that around the normal size (mid) or is mine mid my case is like 20x18x8
i think my power supply seems kinda small in it i mean i could go another 2-3 inchs wider lol
