Hey Vader,

Do we know when the "marriage" actually takes place? Is it before or after you've created a xbox live account?

For example, if I went into my xbox live settings, connected to xbox live, but I haven't actually created my xbox live account yet (no GT on the box yet), is the eeprom and hard drive already tied together at this point? Or do you actually have to create an account and then it gets tied.

Or is it unknown how/when this happens?

no they wont. the MAC address is burnt into a chip on the nic (on the mobo). it is assigned by the manufacturer and cannot be changed, without replacing the chip on the board that contains that info
*

you sure? i could have sworn the MAC address changed with the eeprom changes (meaning its in the eeprom)

i personally dont know when it happens, someone may have tested it and they might know (feedback people!) i usually play it safe and tell peopel to assume any connection to Live has caused a marriage

same way they know its the one thats married to your eeprom, make/model/serial

It might actually be based on its size

8 or 10 GB might mean XBL thinks its stock. This hasn't been proved either way yet as far as I know wink.gif

QUOTE(Cutriss @ Jun 15 2005, 01:32 PM)
Actually, I had a thought about this -

Suppose you have two Xboxes. One virgin. Never gets modded. Never gets squat. The other has an upgraded HDD, whatever, but never ever ever touches the Internet.

Boot EvoX via soft exploit, and don't install. Back up the EEPROM.

Write the virgin EEPROM to the modded Xbox. Now you have two Xboxes, one cloned from the other. AFAIK, the data is signed using a hash of your Xbox serial number. So, if your serial number matches, the data can be reused, right?

So, now you can download all the Live content in the world, and then FTP it off the Xbox and over to the modded box. Since they're "the same Xbox", it'd work, wouldn't it?

If I had a spare Xbox handy, I'd check into this myself.
*

Not sure if the xboxes would be able to successfully communicate on a LAN, since they're the same xbox they're going to confuse the ethernet protocol wink.gif

Like trying to dial your own telephone from your telephone and then wondering why your other phones don't ring wink.gif

Also, i don't think two xboxes with the same eeprom can play system link together

Ummm, no, fairly certain its in the eeprom...

or put it another way...

the NIC is the mobo, and the chip that you're talking about *is* the eeprom.

Far as I know, it hasn't been confirmed when exactly it happens.

i considered this, but i dont think size is directly queryable from teh firmware, only make/model/serial, so it would be much simpler to query model and compare to a list of stock models than to look up the model and determine the size

hey, if anyone has a maxtor or IBM 8gb drive and some spare eeproms please try this out

if my gamertag has been flagged and i save it to my memory unit .. then i take it to a friends house who has live and happens to have an upgraded hdd... i will get his eeprom and hdd banned????

if you sign on with his xbox then yes, you will get him banned and probably very pissed at you

Lordvader, a little help here is needed (also because i am more technological inferior than you). I have played live for about a little over a year and decided to mod my xbox. Its now modded with a x2 ce modchip with a evox bios and dash. Trying live one day, I got banned, chip was left on. Now since I dont think I approve with the marriage terms, would it be possible to just get a stock EEPROM and hd, stick into my xbox, and just put a switch in there to switch from the 200gb hd to the stock hd and not get banned? Would I need a different GT? Can M$ detect this?

as long as your using a switch to use only the stock HD on Live (with modchip disable) you will be fine with you old GT

if you get a new GT you can use a new, unbanned 200gb on Live

you sdhould also get a Live blocking bios for your chip to help prevent logging in with chip enabled

Hi.

I have a strange question.
My friend has an unmodded Xbox. It's never been modded or run anything homebrew. It's a US model and he's in the UK. Anyway tonight his HD died, and of course MS won't fix it since it's a US model. He's also on Live.

We're both taking part in a competition on Live so we need to get him back online ASAP. Would I be right in thinking that he could just replace his current broken HD with a virgin stock unbanned Xbox HD? See he can't actually change his eeprom because he's not chipped or anything. So if he did get an unbanned HD, would he or would he not get banned because of a HD Eeprom mismatch?

When I was banned for having the chip on once (d'oh) I replaced the HD with an unbanned virgin and a new eeprom, and it has worked fine. But I was able to change crap around in config magic. He can't

Any help would be great.
Thanks.

What happens if I have never subscribed to LIVE. I change my Stock HDD to a 120GB HDD & then setup LIVE. I have a Xenium chip installed. Will I Still get banned

thank you very much lordvader

Yes.

In which case you'd owe him a new gamertag, eeprom and hd...

You need to replace his eeprom at the same time as the HD.

So, you might as well mod his xbox.

it also helps to read atleast the first few posts before you post a question

Okay so we had an idea.
I'm not sure if it will work, can anyone confirm it?

My friend's xbox isn't chipped, mine is.
What we need to do basically is get a NEW HD into his Xbox. However if the HDD key doesn't match up to his EEPROM then he runs the risk of getting banned.

I had the idea of him sending me his current broken HD (which works for a while) and then putting it in my modded Xbox and running config magic. Would I be able to get the HDD key off this drive on its own or would it need to be in his xbox with his eeprom?

To sumarise:
take his unbanned but damaged HDD
get the HDD key off this drive using my modded xbox and config magic
give the new drive his old hdd's key using my xbox and config magic
send him the new drive with his old hdd key

is this possible?

no, it isnt possible, his HD is locked to his xbox, your (modded ornot) wont be able to boot with it

what youlol need is to mod his xbox somehow, since it works intermittantly you might be able to get away with a softmod, purchase and use config magic flash a virgin eeprom, then use xhdm to set up and lock a new HD with the purchased eeprom, this being done the HD should work in his xbox and he will not get banned
chigawanai
Thanks I'll give it a go.
adam9986
WTF? I thought an XBL blocking BIOS is supposed to BLOCK XBL sign-ins?? This is so gay. I have 1.6 XBox modded with an X3 w/ the latest BIOS. I know for sure that I have the XBL blocking enabled. The other day my friend comes over and starts to play a game that I have on my HDD and then he forgot that it was on my HDD and attempts to sign into XBL, he remembers that the game is on my HDD (when I'm yelling at him to not get on Live) and cancels the sign-in. I wasn't really too worried, because I knew that the BIOS is supposed to block XBL sign-ins. Anyway, today I try to sign on and it gives me modded Xbox error. What gives? Is there more to blocking XBL than just having that option enabled? I plan on getting a new EEPROM and HDD soon, but I don't want this to accidently happen again. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks guys.

lordvader129
Live blocking isnt 100%, some games connect to Live differently and get around the blocking, i think teh MS troubleshooter bypasses it too, not sure though
adam9986
Well....alright. Still gay, but at least I know I didn't do anything wrong. I just won't let him come over any more...haha. Thanks.

PS - the game was Greg Hastings' Paintball if anyone wondered.

Does the marrage theory only apply to a single hdd per eeprom? i ask this because i was banned and i am in the process of getting a new eeprom, so i already reverted to my stock hdd. One of my mates came round and didnt know i had been banned so he tried to go on live, of course it wouldn't let him, but all it said was 'xbox live not found', nothing bout s'ware/h'ware mods.

is my stock drive alright to use with my new eeprom and old GT?
or do i need to get myself a new hdd and a new GT to use with my new eeprom?

if i need a new GT, is this a new live account or do i obtain a new GT another way?

thanks.

I think your HD is alright.

You can use a non-banned HD with multiple eeproms. So presumably your eeprom got banned with your upgraded HD, which means the eeprom and hd are banned. and thus since you eeprom was banned, you couldn't get on live with your unbanned stock HD to get it banned too wink.gif

Just wanna make extra sure... I have a X3 installed in my XBox along with a 250 GB HDD. I could never go online with it because right when I modded it there error XBL could not be found always came up. I never got a Modded Xbox Error. So is there anyway to tell if my 250 GIG HDD is banned, cause thats just retarted if i have to buy another... I dont even really know if im banned..

Ok, i accidently signed on with my modchip on and got banned, but my account was out of time and i was planning to get a new hd so i didnt care. After i got the new hd sometimes when i booted to the ms dash it automaticly tried to sign on to live cause i forgot to take the cable out but i didnt care because i knew my eeprom was already banned. So later on my friends all wanted me to mod their xboxs, and one of them never used live before so i took his eeprom and flashed it to my xbox figuring i could get back on live. I deleted my inactive flagged account that i was banned on cause i was planning to make a new one. But when i try to sign on to live it says live not found. Does this have anything to do with accidently booting to ms dash with the internet cable plugged in?

My xbox automaticly attempted to sign on while I had my new hd, but it didnt connect beacause i was already banned.
Lord Magnus
This would be good test.

If you connect that HD, and with a new eeprom, and you're able to play live without problems. That would mean that once your eeprom is banned, and if you want to connect to xbox live, that eeprom is all the Live servers are going to see and won't let you go any further.
So, basically, if you can connect to Live by just changing that eeprom, it'll help answer that question of "When does Live actually check for HD Size?"

Good luck.

A question. Are your HD serial number and eeprom tied together with your account? In my case my Live account is up and I haven't renewed it yet. Would I be able to start a new account with the same eeprom but a different HD? I didn't see this, may have missed it though.

no, the eeprom and hdd are married to each other, not your gamer tag. so even if you get a new gt, if you upgrade the hdd without changign the eeprom, your hdd and eeprom will be banned

you cant you use the same eeprom you used with your stock drive, thats rule #1 of marriage theory for crying out loud

you can use your firends eeproms no problem though, just make sure you get one from the same version xbox as yours

I tried asking this in hardware forum buy didn't get answer... anyway people on this forum probably have more experience with this.

Ok si i got a new hd and bought a new eeprom for my 1.6 (yes new eeprom is supposed to be from a 1.6) i tried flashing the eeprom with configmagic (i did use version that supports 1.6). After i flash and reset xbox, the led is green, and dvd tray won't eject. If i reflash with original eeprom everything works. I made sure that the dvd\xbe region was the same (ntsc region 1), other than that, the dvd kit on the original eeprom was 0 and the new one was 1. Tried flashing with 0, nothing , and 1, still nothing and still get same result. Did this guy sell me a bad eeprom? Or am i missing something?

Please help, haven't played halo 2 in like a month, need my fix...
