Can I connect my xbox to my pc and still use the internet without a router or hub, is so how would I do it?

If I understand your question correctly, the answer would be no. If you are using a broadband connection with a cable coming from your NIC and connecting either to a router or hub or a cable or DSL modem, you will not be able to have that connection.
You could plug your XBox into your router though, or get another NIC.

a second NIC in your PC and a crossover cable and use Internet Connection Sharing

actuly you could.If.
you have a modem that has usb 2.0 conection on it.
an you have a crossover cable.

I have a modem that uses usb to connect and I also have a crossover cable but if I connect my xbox with pc I can no longer use the internet connection

your xbox should be in home network and the internet would be in local network.
you just gota set it up right
