This is an annoying problem when playing the game backed up to the HDD. On Peragus, the game begins to act strangely. After your T3 droid gets zapped, the game goes to a black screen. The only way to resolve this is to save and load, then you find yourself in a situation where you are your Jedi character. This is a glitch! If you go back to the fuel depot you will turn into your broken T3 unit and not be able to do anything.

I ran into this problem as well. I tried the original disc and found that that worked perfectly.

To test, I created and burned an ISO onto DVD-R and found that the backup DVD worked perfectly as well. I then began poking around the game files I'd FTP'ed to my PC and I discovered the "swdirsXbox.ini" file that was previously mentioned here.

This is the original INI file from the game as it appears on the original game disc:

Original "swdirsXbox.ini" file from KotOR II
CODE
[Alias]
HD0=d:\
OVERRIDE=d:\Override
ERRORTEX=d:\Errortex
TEMP=z:\Temp
MODULES=d:\Modules
LOGS=t:\Logs
LOCALVAULT=d:\LocalVault
DMVAULT=d:\DMVault
SERVERVAULT=d:\ServerVault
STREAMMUSIC=d:\STREAMMusic
TEMPCLIENT=z:\Tempclient
SAVES=u:\
CURRENTGAME=z:\currentgame
TEXTUREPACKS=d:\texturepacks
STREAMWAVES=d:\StreamWaves
GAMEINPROGRESS=z:\GAMEINPROGRESS
REBOOTDATA=z:\rebootdata
LIPS=d:\Lips

As you can It references the "d:" directory many times. I figured, why not change those instances to the actual game directory when running from the HDD?

So I revised the file by replacing each mention of d: with f:\games\Star Wars KotOR II. The latter is the directory you are most likely copying to. This will be the directory that 99% of people have backed up to. If you backed up elsewhere, you will obviously have to change to the appropriate game directory.

The resulting INI file should look like this:

Modified "swdirsXbox.ini" file from KotOR II
CODE
[Alias]
HD0=f:\games\Star Wars KotOR II
OVERRIDE=f:\games\Star Wars KotOR II\Override
ERRORTEX=f:\games\Star Wars KotOR II\Errortex
TEMP=z:\Temp
MODULES=f:\games\Star Wars KotOR II\Modules
LOGS=t:\Logs
LOCALVAULT=f:\games\Star Wars KotOR II\LocalVault
DMVAULT=f:\games\Star Wars KotOR II\DMVault
SERVERVAULT=f:\games\Star Wars KotOR II\ServerVault
STREAMMUSIC=f:\games\Star Wars KotOR II\STREAMMusic
TEMPCLIENT=z:\Tempclient
SAVES=u:\
CURRENTGAME=z:\currentgame
TEXTUREPACKS=f:\games\Star Wars KotOR II\texturepacks
STREAMWAVES=f:\games\Star Wars KotOR II\StreamWaves
GAMEINPROGRESS=z:\GAMEINPROGRESS
REBOOTDATA=z:\rebootdata
LIPS=f:\games\Star Wars KotOR II\Lips

After modifying the file the game worked perfectly. No black screen, no getting stuck as the broken T3 droid.

I hope this helps people experiencing a similar problem when backing up to their HDD. smile.gif

Thanks man! You saved my day! smile.gif

DantheOutcast
didn't work for me =/

even copied the whole "this is what the ini should look like" into my file [after several tries with my own edited ini, i thought mabey i had mis-typed something and i just couldnt see it]

meh probibly just me
j_guzzler
It didnt work for me either, so I dont think its just you. Do we need that xbe patch?
chefelf
DantheOutcast & j_guzzler,

Did you try clearing your CACHE files after uploading the new INI file? Give that a shot if you haven't tried it.

Report your results back here. If clearing the CACHE doesn't work, let me know your BIOS, how you backed up, DVD or HDD, etc. smile.gif

Note: You may need to load from a save point BEFORE the T3 gets blasted.
j_guzzler
-Thanks, will do when i get home, and by clearing the cache you mean, load up a bunch of games so that KOTOR2 gets removed from the cache?

-I have a save point right before I access the computer console, cause i read somewhere that saving there, then quiting, watching the movie trailer, then loading back will work....but no....so I have a save right at that point.

Well you could do it that way but it would be easiest to use a file manager or FTP.

Instructions for how to clear the cache can be found here: Troubleshooting Game Backup Problems
j_guzzler
Duh, i didnt even think about that...such an idiot.....now just got to wait another half hour to get off work and try it out....hope it works.
The Fiend
hmmm, still no results chefelf... i'm not saying that your fix won't work on ANY box, it just doesn't on mine.
j_guzzler
Hey, the cache thing didnt work for me neither (and my hopes were so hi). I am running a V 1.6 xbox, think its an M8 Bios, I bought the game then sold it too my sister (she doesnt have a mod chip) so I will probably get the disk back from her and pass this frickin part then save again....
mannion
this worked a treat for me

I edited the .ini as chefelf outlined. changing where appropriate

first, I tried playing on from the game I had saved just before the blackness bit. no joy, black as the night itself.

then I deleted all kotor2 save games and cleared out the cache and started a new game.

bingo! sans blackness

simple but effective elf

j_guzzler
This weekend I am going to get my copy back from my sis and try that, if that doesnt work (which it should) then i will delete all saved games and try, try again.....damnit all you you others are talking about light sabers and such, and here my guy is half naked with a vibroblade...sad.gif
T-1200
i deleted my ini, deleted all my save games and still got the black screen
quall
I just unequipped everything and accessd the terminal from the far right. It loaded past it fine. Autosave was left on.
xecuter27
Hello!
Doesn't work for me too. Changed the ini file und deleted the cache!
perhaps there are also differences between pal und ntsc? The pal Version is out
on the 10th Feb. (germany) two month later than ntsc - perhabs there are other
glitch in these versions.
quall
well, mine is ntsc and it has the glitch. Have you tried un-equipping the droid before using the terminal?
xecuter27
I tried it but but no success. Still Blackscreen
j_guzzler
Nothing worked, so I got my original copy from my sister, and I finally got past that stupid black screen.....My guy has clothes now.....stupid glitches, I could do the first part with my eyes closed now, tried it like 20 times.....
Pereghost
I have had this same prob for about a month and after searching and searching I found this:

http://us.codejunkies.com/saves_show_game....=1279328276&p=8

It is a save point past the the droid create by action replay.

Now you can load up and go save that load of crap T3.

Is that a tweaked savegame? i'm looking for one that's "standard" without any cheats. I don't care that my character gets changed but i just want to continue the game...
stinger01
this fix definately doesn't work for me.

the only way i've been able to get around it is to save it when it goes black and just load it and ill be in control of my main char again. but as soon as i enter the docking bay, im in control of my stupid broken t3 droid again which can't even do anything because its broken. <-- anyone have that problem too?

I think it is safe to say that there is no cure for the PAL version of this game. What feckin' joke this is!

Chefelf:

When you applied the .ini fix , did you start the game all over again after that (deleting all save games) ? Or did you just use a save game from before the black screen ?

Greetz,

Berreta

Time for me to shed a little light.

I have run this game from start to 36 hours into the game on HDD using the following:

Kotor II NTSC
1.6A NTSC Box
Xecuter 3
X3 Live 2915 Bios
Seagate Stock HDD

No glitches whatsoever.

A buddy of mine was glitching when using EvoX M7 but the glitching stopped when he flashed his TSOP to EvoX M8... Coincidence?

with all the weird fixes that've been proposed: Yes, probably.
chefelf
To give you al ittle more insight. Aside from editing and uploading the new INI file I also did the following:

1.) Delete all my cache files. This includes all the files found in the following directories:

E:\CACHE
X:\
Y:\
Z:\

2.) Reload from a save point from BEFORE the T3 accesses the computer.

I'm not 100% sure if clearing the cache is necessary but it certainly can't hurt. Reolading form BEFORE the T3 accesses the computer is crucial because that data from the incorrect INI file will, more or less, be present in any gamesave from after that point, causing the glitch.

Hope that clears a few things up. smile.gif

i'm still trying to get my HD backup to work.
I got a 1.6 xbox, X3 chip and latest bios.

I've edited the ini files, cleared the cache drives and folder on E, started from the beginning and i still get the black screen.

Is anyone else still having trouble getting this fix to work?

Do you have the problem playing off the original disc?
RandomMutation
does this problem happen anywhere else in the game?

I have a HDD back up and an original disc. Used the disc to get past the glitch mentioned above, and now running off HDD again.
YogSatoth
It's funny.. i get the dde error from my hdd & and dvd-r backups I make, but I can't even actually get into the game. I can make a character, but as soon as i hit the A button on "play" i get a few bars of loading, and then, wham, dde. Gawds this is annoying. Maybe that's a PAL version thing. I wonder if it has something to do with unleashX? perhaps i should change my dash over to evoX.
ether99
I dont know if you guys have tried this fix, but it did work for me first time. This is the quote from the backups forum, posted by Shakaru:

QUOTE

TSR Mode - WORKS
For Evox users, just follow these easy steps.
1) Go into you Settings tab on the Evox Dashboard and find the option for TSR. Set this to Debug (Not normal unlike many thought) Save, restart evox and then open Kotor 2.
2) get to the part right before you access the terminal that opens the administration level before the cut scene and save.
3) In Internet Explorer type "Telnet:100.100.100.100". The 100's are obviously for your xboxs ip.
4) Then type in the new window that poped up "FR" but do not hit enter. You are doing this to get ready for a quick shot.
5) Now do the whole terminal thing and right as T3 gets zapped and the screen starts to fade, hit ENTER on your keyboard. You xbox should freeze.
6) Next on telnet just type "UF" for un freeze and the game should continue on and autosave and load the next part.
Your timing is all important as for the window of opertunity is short. If it dosent work, go back and try again. Took me 2 trys for this.

Now, I do have problems with the audio - I'm getting jittering and slowdowns whenever characters speak and when I'm just running around. I erased all the cache folders on Z, Y, X and E and this works for the first time I load it but just returns to the jittering the second time I load... I'll keep working on that
Di_jo
I can't telnet in while gaming!

What have i to do?

How do i use saves from actionreply site?

thx a lot, waiting to play one of the best game ever!

Why don't you just use your original disk to get past this part, and then off the HD?

cause my dvd reader is broken!

I can use neither original nor backup disk, just trough ftp.

Shall i use somehow the original disk in my pc dvd reader?

thx
Ozy
Perhaps you have to delete a file like in GTA the capfinal file.

Other than that I don't know.
Beretta1979
Hi guys, I also have the PAL version and I can garantee that the only working fix for me was the TSR fix. I tried all other fixes , including the ini file fix posted here but non worked. The TSR fix worked for me the first time. And it is really not that difficult, that is , if you can connect with your computer to your xbox

Splinter
My problem is a bit different. I modified the ini before i even played the game. So today I finally get around to playing. All is fine, I get to the spot and the game freezes still. No biggie since I expected it. So I put in the DVD and load up, and get past the part with no problem. I then saved after I controlled my Jedi, than loaded up the save. I get through and down into the mine. The probelm is that from then on I can't hit anyone. All my shots and melee hit miss. I have tried clearing the cache, turning off trainers, removing extra files, and reverting back to the original ini file. Nothing worked so i came here hoping some one had this identical problem. I wonder why mine is so different.

Although i really doubt it matters, this is the NTSC version, I run the latest evox version with TSR set to normal. I have NO other problems with games and I play a lot and mess around with them often. I have wasted more than 6 hours now trying to just narrow down the start of this and try to fix it. I can't think of anything else to do. Even if I use the disc and load right before T3 gets shot, the same thing ends up happening. this is so damn weird. I'll try a save file I guess for now.
chefelf
Sounds like it's probably a weird bug in the game. I'm not sure if it's related to the T3 problem. You could try editing the INI file and see if that works but I don't know.
Splinter
I already had edited the ini and with either version it is the same. Using a downloaded save did not work, nor did running off of a disc. I had been using a hdd fix xbe i found online before to try to make the glitch never happen, but it was gone at the time of the downloaded save, so i don't know if the fix file could affect the save. Just in case of anything I am deleting the game off of my hdd. I will then transfer it again to the xbox and load up my saves. If that still doesn't work I will try a whole new game. I don't know what else to do.
Kl0J0
Goddiaaaamn

Ofcourse the TSR is the only way to 100% sure make it work...
But what do I get... a big fuck you. If I turn on debug TSR I can't get past the evoxloadingscreen blink.gif

If I leave the option turned off and just try to telnet to my box.... I can't get a connection.

I tried the fixed ini...deleted all my saves and started over... still that freagin black screen 'o nothing! mad.gif

I'm going nuts.

EDIT

Ow right watching that movie also did nada for me.
nab195
This annoying bug gave me days of pain, I tried everything related to changing game files. (thanks for the help anyway chefelf) In the end just make a backup copy of the game and whenever you get stuck run it from disk. You can FTP the files to your comp. and make a backup CD easily.

ps. I'm quite far into the game and im back to running the game from the HDD and no other bug has happened to me....yet.
Ozy
Wait a min!

OK everybody is it just me or do the cashe files write in a different patition to the directory?

Check it says something like Z:/ drive but they write in X:/ drive or something.

I changed it.

UPDATE - didn't do a feckin' thing. Just have to run t off the disc for that part every time.

awesome got it working on first try!!! Thanks a million!!!

How can something like this beat us?

Someone must be able to create a patch or something.
McGeyser
I just started playing this game and have come to the same crash as everyone here. Tried all steps, no avail. The game was just getting good too, must be a media check right? Will somebody please bust out the hex editor, I'm hex illiterate. This is a pinned problem FFS, be a hero, please?

Ozy
Ok I'll atempt hex. It can't be any harder then using the old action replay carts for N64 to find the right code, right?

Find the value of the Hex codes when the game crashes and when the game runs off the disc and just isolate the right code(s) to preven the crashes and make a patch to fix the hex value.

Probably wrong and I don't know how to do it on xbox but my futile atempts won't go unnoted.......I hope.
Ozy
Ok can't do it just buy the frigging game like I did in the fist place.
