Hi I would like to connect my xbox in my car without the use of an inverter. I currently am using one that I bought from Maplins but I rather have it connected to the car battery instead but dont know how.

I have read you need to convert the xbox to 12v (erm how?) blink.gif

If there is anyone who can help with this I would be very grateful as the inverter is doing my head in, the static lines are very annoying and the inverter itself isnt exactly quiet.

Thanks in advanced

inverter = 30 quid

DC-DC converter = upwards of £100 quid

if you wanna run it 'off the battery', why not just cut off the cigarette lighter attachment and extend and connect the two wires to the battery direct

treat it as if you were wiring an amplifier in.

all you need is 1 thick wire, connect it to the battery, making sure you use a fuse BEFORE YOU BRING THE WIRE INTO THE BULKHEAD,

bring that wire to the + wire on the inverter
connect the - side of the inverter to the car chassis

easy peasy

I wanted to avoid using a inverter all 2geta
wowko
thats impossible, 2 different types of current

if that was the case then got maxx would not be using a 12v powered portable x box without an inverter it is possible.

Check these out... you could use those with this:

And you should be good... *shurg*

Cars voltage is never constant 12v it has spikes of 14 and lows of 10 at some times. Get a volt meter and check your self. You would need a DC-DC converter to power the xbox because it keeps it at 12 constant.

Check out some pages on mp3car.com and some other web pages about putting computers in your car for mp3 players. They have tuts on making a dc-dc converter and best ways of using an inverter.

i get that but surely a capacitor will smooth it out enough for it to work????? or will it not i thought it would be the same principal as an amp my voltage fluxuated a lot before i fitted a capacitor before the amp now it does not cary by more than .3 volts
just an idea

Hi I tried connecting a capacitor but couldn’t get it to work at all, didnt get no power to the screens: blink:

but reading up more on this subject, apparently ground the yellow video cable will resolve this issue so im going to try it as soon as I get a new v1.0 PSU mine blew up some how unsure.gif

Assuming you got a steady 12V out of the car this should be possible. The whole purpose of the PSU inside the xbox is to convert 120V AC (or in some cases 240V AC) to various DC voltages. You basically need to build a new PSU so you could pull the voltages you need from the 12V DC. I think you need 12V, 5V, and 3.3V but I'm not sure. If you had a pinout of the PSU it would be alot easier to see what you need. But again, this all assumes a constant 12V input which I don't think you have. Getting the 5V and 3.3V is doable with some simple parts from radio shack to make a voltage regulator. After this is all said and done though, you may not have the right current.

True, most computers use 12V and most cars are 12V. But computers want clean and regulated power. Not something you will get from a car. So, so a google search.

It won't fit into the XBox case, but this will run it perfect and was designed to filter out all the crazy stuff in the cars power.

ignore that

Aaaargh

look at how many posts I have
have a quick flick thru them

A CAPACITOR WILL NOT BE ENOUGH

simple as that really

you are correct in assuming that a capacitor does smooth voltage,

however, a car has a LOT of nasty high voltage transients on the 12V line,
and if you look at car amplifier stiffening capacitors, they are rated at 14.4 volts or higher

YOU NEED A DC TO DC CONVERTER IF YOU DONT WANT TO USE AN INVERTER

INVERTERS ARE 10xCHEAPER THAN THE EQUIVALENT DC-DC CONVERTER

you can connect an inverter directly to the battery

the ONLY other alternative is a huge bank of 7812 and 7805 regulators, however, you will only be able to run your xbox with the engine on

THERE ARE NO OTHER SUITABLE ALTERNATIVES SO STOP BLOODY ASKING & LOOK AT THE LINKS PEOPLE HAVE GIVEN

fuck man chill i asked a simple question i asked it as someone had managed to get there x box running off a 12v supply of battery's which is essentially what fitting it in a car is doing.
