in a nutshell, yes. with the latest softmods/installers, a softmod can do almost everything that a modchip can do. the advantages of a modchip are:
1:boot up an unlocked HD
2:can boot up an xbox with a bad eeprom/bios (only certian chips can do this)
3: unique addons only available to a chip (LCD screens, bios banks, ect).
4: can be turned off via switch to play on xbl
advantages of soft is:
1: Its cheap
2: easier to restore back to stock to play xbl
3: with current exploits (uxe) it is safe
4: NO SOLDERING!!! lol
5: if using stock HD, your warrenty is not voided (sortof, read the disclaimer M$ provides...)
Downfalls of a modchip:
1: Cost. some of em are cheap, others are rather spendy IMO.
2: Installation. some are solderless, but these have had there probs too (connections coming loose).
Downfalls of a softmod
1: Installation. If you are not carefull, you can end up with a dead xbox
2: If using an older exploit, you may run into a clock loop.
Downfall of both softmod and modchip.
1: no matter what anybody tells you, you CAN NOT play xbl when either is active (on/running)
in the end, they are both good choices, it is up to you on which route to take. I took the softmod route because I am a cheap b@$t@rd, lol
