Has anyone ever seen an xbox 1.6 shut off because of high temps?
Mine has run as high as 80 c (20% fan) according to xbmc and
nothing happens.
Do I need to up my fan speed (80mm)? Or am I safe?

80 c sounds PRETTY HIGH!!!
Mine runs at 40-50 all the time at xbmc. Instead of adjusting the fans speed, adjust the maximum temperature(just below the fan speed option) Set it to 55-60 or something like that and it will automaticly speed up the fan when needed. Cheers

Yes but regarding my first question?

lol 80C I hope you are kidding. 80C == 176F, most xboxs run at 130F 135F max
an 1.6 xbox will not shut off, due to MS being cheap and removing the temp sensors to drop the price down $30 for you. So yeah, I wouldn't just let it burn if I were you... I believe a non 1.6 will shutoff around 150Fish.
try to get it around 55C or below, even then it is running normal and not cool. Is it in a tight spot, or on the carpet?
this is how hot my xbox used to run at after two hours of halo

THanks for the answer... and Nope I am not kidding.
You are sure the xbox 1.6 does not shut off? You have read this somewhere
or now this first hand? I have also read people saying that the xbox hw is
cheap and that it maybe even so that the shut off does not work...
I have a 80mm and have to run it at 80% to keep it at 57C (140.6F).
The space I keep it in is a little cramped and I am working on that...
But no one can really tell me for sure what the deal is with the temp on
a 1.6. Evox shows crap temps.. xbmc is not reliable...

Nevermind, you're right, im a idiot
you are not going to get a temp reading from your xbox unless you add a temp sensor yourself. I dont know what I was thinking, since 1.6s dont even come with temp sensors. Just ignore that 80C, but get it out of that small space

To just put your mind at ease. My 1.6 showed 96 C on start up! Later, it said it was running at 0 C.
If you are really concerned then put your hand at the back by the fan and see how hot the air is comming out, I suspect you will hardly feel it. I recently, just for a bit of a trial, ran my V1.1 xbox fan at the top speed XBMC will run it at, the air was blasting out and just warm with an indicated temp of about 47 C, which dropped down very rapidly.
Also, make sure the intakes and exhaust are not blocked by, for example, the rear and sides of a cupboard, you ideally need to find a larger space.

140F? What kind of fan (mm) do you have and
at what speed (%) do you run it?

1.6s do not have temperature sensors, any reading you get on a 1.6 xbox is NOT CORRECT
they do however have the 160 degree failsafe, since that is on the processor die and not an added sensor

Great!..... but then I still would like to know if anyone has actually ever
seen a xbox shut off.
Further more... xbmc temps seem to be real... (which is throwing people off maybe) Turn of the fan, temp goes up, turn fan back on, temp goes down....
or is it linked to the fan speed in some way?
Regards.

I have seen an xbox auto shut off, a friend of mine forgot to plug the fan back in after a mod, played it for like 5 minutes and it turned off, he realised the error and plugged the fan back in. He booted up and UnleashX registered at 76 degrees C. He turned it off for an hour and its back to normal.

Was that a 1.6 xbox?

1.6 boxes don't read proper temps due to lack of sensors.. processor shut down is still there though and i know that for a fact because i've managed to trip it myself.
forgot to plug the fan back in when i was doing some work on the box.. shut down on me after maybe 5 minutes of gametime. screen went black and front led's flashed orange.
and yes, this was a 1.6 box

My friend has a 1.6 HALO LE box with the 12v fan mod.
One time when we were putting his box back together we pulled the ground wire away from the shielding, so there was no fan power. And sure enough, we played for about 10 min or so and the box shut off.
