I have PC parts lying around like NICs and old Video cards and sound cards and whatnot

could i pull one of the capacitors off of one of them and test it to use on my xbox?

and if so, could someone please tell me how I might test it and what I should look for to ensure it will work?

NetworkBoy told me the capacitor I am missing is a ".1uF capacitor 0603 SMT".

Any help would be appreciated.

I would try radioshack or a major electonics component store first
or look on the internet

Ask the people at radioshack for a ".1uF capacitor 0603 SMT".

Good Luck

i already checked with them... they said they had a .1uF however it was much larger than what i needed and didnt even resemble the part i was looking for.

I showed the board to them and they said they had nothing like that... there was an electrician there though who took a look at it and told me that was a "specialty" part I would most likely need to remove from another board...

he told me I may be able to find it from a similar type board... so i thought about using some of these PC parts laying around

i just need to know how to test their capacitance or whatever blink.gif

You'll need a capacitance meter:

look there for an idea.

Good Luck!!!

ok i soldered on a new capacitor and it looks good but my box still FRAGs

could anyone tell me how I can make sure the capacitor is functioning properly?
what reading should I get from it on my meter?

It should be low voltage (0.2-5v)and 1uF (micro farad the u is short for greek letter mu wich is a 'u' with a tail on the front)

By the way I hope you soldered to the two pads next to where the capacitor was... that would be your best bet of getting a good connection. I would'nt try seating it where the old cap use to be.

Good Luck!!!

im not sure what u mean... i cleaned the two pads then added the new capacitor to them with some solder

i dont see anywhere else to place the capacitor?

I'm talking abot the two solder rimmed holes directly above and below the capacitor. You willl have to look at the trails but I believe that is where you should solder the new capacitor. Not where the old one use to be seated.

0603 = size
SMT = surface mount

Hopefully you have the right capacitor because there is no telling by just looking at it.

If you want to buy them they are 6 cents each here...

.1uF 0603 CAP

As far as soldering it...I do this all day at work so using the original pads is best as long as the traces look ok. Check continuity with a multimeter if necessary. Use wick to clean pads befor solder.

Anyways....good luck.
