Hi,

Doing a box for a friend soon, i'm thinking of spraying the dvd tray itself, is there anything i should keep in mind? Its just gonna be silver and i'll put plenty of clear coat on it. It'll look good when its out and through the dvd window.

Im just worried about the paint coming off with the disc spinning and it getting in the drive. Should i take it out of the case or just fully eject it? I reckon i can just fully eject it and cover up the rest of the drive somehow.

Thanks for reading, any tips at all would be good, and maybe pics too!

well it shoulnt come off if you paint it real good but what iff you paintided to much and the disk dragged on the paint? correct me if im wrong and i dont know how to spell that 1 word

Just paint the top of it, like you said use a lot of clear coat, and let it dry for about two weeks before actually using it. The disc won't do anything while its playing as its suspended above the tray, the only thing it'll do is create a bunch of air around the thing.
I've heard vinyl dye is a better way to go about doing this, but I haven't done it myself, so I have no idea if it works better or the same as spray paint.
Good luck, lemme know how it turns out!

Vinyl Dye is indeed the way to go, as it actually bonds and/or changes the color of the plastic, keeping the original texture, unlike spray paint, which just goes on top of it.

Can you recommend a place to get vinyl dye at? I've search my local places and haven't found any. I'd like to do this to my dvd drive, and some other things around the house.

most auto shops should sell it. like super cheap or similair

I sprayed the dvd-drive too. No problems at all. You just have to cover the electronics at the inside and spray with the tray open. Easy job, nice result. wink.gif

I wouldn't worry too much, since the disk does not touch the tray while spinning. Be sure to remove the tray from the drive first.

Vinyl ey? Sounds like a good idea, but as every1 has said, the disc won't be sitting there so it won't be too important. Just a couple of thin layers of silver spray and plenty of clear coat layers should do. Thanks for all the help!
