I've been playing with Windows 98 and qemu on my PC most of the evening because of this. Using <a herf="http://www.litepc.com/98micro.html">98Lite</a> in 98Micro mode, I was able to build a nice image file for Windows 98. I finally got around to uploading it to the Xbox, and Windows booted in under a minute. It ran much better than I had expected it to.

However, I had trouble getting the host CDROM to work with qemu on both my PC and the Xbox. I tried adding /dev/cdrom to the config, but my PC seems to ingnore it.

I haven't played with network settings too much as of yet, but once there's a good way to access the internet/home network with Win98, I imagine it will actually be somewhat useful. (At least more useful than just for show).

If your running qemu on a Windows PC (Host PC) you can't mount the CDrom drive. You can however mout other iso images from qemu while you have Win98 (guest OS) running. Use Ctrl+Alt+2 to bring up the qemu consol. From there type help. that'll give you the info on what to type to load a differant CD iso.
To close the qemu consol to get back to Win98 (Guest OS) Ctrl+Alt+1.

For more info on qemu you start by checking out qemu.com
(I'm not affilated with that sight or any other)

Good luck

hey m.e. ive been following the thread in the linux forum. very good biggrin.gif

if i can manage to get hold of a windows 98 cd i'm definetly gonna give this a try.

i was wondering if anyone knew anything about using a USB keyboard in windows 98. i know that windows 98 (first edition) has no USB support, but does running it under Qemu allow this or is second edition a must?
smashly
qemu uses whatever keys passed for the Host OS , in this case XDSL is the host.

So your xbox controller works the same way in win98 , A= Left mouse click , B= Right mouse click just as it does in XDSL. Same goes for the keyboard , whatever your keyboard is in XDSL is the same in win95 or 98 or 98se or XP.

You can also set keys from within the qemu consol to have just 1 key to represent 2 or 3 keys on your keyboard .
eg: ctrl+alt+delete set to A+S
handy if you need ctrl+alt+delete in Win98 since these keys would conflict with the host os.

successfully booted windows 2000 through Qemu also jsut to clear up the emu uses all the hardware that xDSL can see for instance my Wireless G linksys game adapter provides the xDSL with an interent connection and also there for priveds the windows 2000 os the same connection

this windows 2000 is a stripped down version compiled by myself today with sp4 i put together today in class boots in about 1 -2 minutes

am currently striping and tweaking the windows XP pro SP1 i have successfully gotten to boot on the XBox owever freezes and crashes very often due to lack of ram (hence the neccessary tweaking)

Yeah, works for me prefectly as well. For some reason i had to copy the cab files over manually, as it didn't auto do that the 1st time, and was looking for the files when auto-detecting hardware. Once i learned and did that on another fresh install, it worked just fine.

I can't fricken believe win98 is running. And it really does run pretty nicely. I have a pentium 166 i use for my server, and this is much faster then that. Awesome job figuring this out. Sadly that the other Winbox/Xindows or whatever project never did go anywhere other then posts back and forth. Not needed now, as I can personally testify (along with others here so far) it's actually working just fine, nice speed, and fullscreen and all (can't tell your using DML running 98).

ok help me out please if i understand right (i made a win98.iso)and i gotta put it with 98.sh both in the same xdsl folder?
scimitar116
is there a xbox port of Qemu? if not there should be. we could get a (potentially) noticeable speed increase if we skipped linux and went straight to Qemu.

EDIT: btw, i have tried this twice now, and the win98 installation hangs at the date\time properties screen. (at the 'setting up hardware and finalizing settings' section of the install)

What do you mean by compiled? I assume you are referring to turning off unnecessary services etc. in Win2k. Or are you referring to the setup of win2k to work with Qemu?

I can't get it right... I spent a lot of time installing Win98SE on my pc, putting DirectX and Jazz Jackrabbit 2 on it, but when I load it on my xbox it goes very slow, and the mouse moves wayyyy too slow when on startup.

This goes on a while and then you return to xdsl... very weird. on my pc it worked.

Doesn't directx work on an xbox? Can anybody try and let me know if that's the problem?

I have tried several times now with the same results. Installation hangs at date/time as soon as I hit Apply or OK.

I also got a Windows Protection Error at the same spot one time. Not sure what I did different though.

How did you get startcraft to work?

Did you put the files from the disc into the img, and install from windows, or put a working directory in or what?

I must have spent about 10 hours trying to get civilization 3 to work, using so many methods and after installing for about 3 hours up to 33% the install quit (It did get past asking for all the discs), i wasn't happy.

think it would be stable enough to run counterstrike? be neat to have steam on my xbox. . . even be cool to use it as a dedicated server. I'd mention trying hl2 on it but it requires more than 128mb of ram. . . would there be anyway to trick it into thinking theres more than 128mb of ram?
Clubmed112
Hey, I can't find the tutorial on that site, can anyone link it to me, sorry.

i'll tell you all who dont understand...i have not ran windown 98 on my xbox or linux for that matter BUT dont even THINK of trying to get half-life or half-life 2 to even run thats a NONO even with 128 mb of ram hah 512 barely run it smooth we would be luck to even get Quake to work

I don't know... If Q3A Gold or Team edition or whatever it was works on a crappy PII PC with a TNT2 video card (It ran quite smooth actually smile.gif), Quake I or even Quake III should work fairly well in my opinion smile.gif.

Has anyone been able to compile x-DSL in a way that it can pass the controller ports 2-4 to Qemu so they could be used by XBCD and therefore Q3A? FPS the way they WEREN'T meant to be played... biggrin.gif.

i have windows 98SE upgrade edition, and was unable to get around the "producte verification" step of installing 98. the step checks to see if you have a "valid windows product to make you eligible for the upgrade" i can't seem to get around this, because qemu wont read the A:\ drive where my win 3.1 disks are. any ideas?

I've tried using that site that shows that tutorial on how to get windows 98 to run on your xbox but for some reason I can't get the download to work to be able to download the files to help make the windows cd. Anyways the site is http://www.pspupdates.com/windows-98-on-xb...psphacker%20com and also too I think with the games it's probobly best to try and run games with a nocd crack so that there is no cd to even bother with, just an idea, Thanks.

How I can run the .bat file in xdsl?! Always shows that cant open this extension... (cant open .exe, too wink.gif) dont understad it. Or misunderstanding? wink.gif thx...

ok i installed a ftp server in win98 in qemu and my desktop and i can connect to the ftp server only through win98 to my desktop. but not from my desktop to win98. but qeum says the the way the network was emulated was through a 'Firewall/DHCP server ' hence the funny 10.0.0.15 ip address ( http://fabrice.bellard.free.fr/qemu/qemu-doc.html ) but does any one know of a way to get the network working both ways??
Brycesk8er
hello everyone. in this tutorial it wont let me download the kit under step 5 of the tutorial. anyone no whats wrong??? please help. thanks
Scramble
Firstly the link on tutorial step five you refer to (http://pspupdates.qj.net/windows-98-on-xbox.html):
right click and save target as. It tries to save as win98.htm but rename to win98.rar before clicking ok.

Secondly the 98.sh file. It's saved as a pc file and not a unix file and you need to open it in a linux text editor, remove the carriage returns and save.

If you've ftp'd the qemu folder to e on you xbox, the 98.sh file should look something like:

#!/bin/bash
echo Loading Windows 98...
sudo /mnt/hda51/qemu/qemu/qemu -L /mnt/hda56/qemu/qemu/ -m 24 -hda ./win98.img -cdrom ./win98.iso -full-screen
Scrufdog
am I missing something?

I followed the tut using 98lite and such, and after all was done I copied the the img, sh and qemu dir over to my e drive but when i run xdsl it sez it cant find 98.sh

Am i supposed to copy into the knoppix directory, or am i supposed to ftp it in when im running xdsl?
Cio
Some basic tips here:

The "SH" file is basicly a "BAT" file (script). It assumes you have a frugal install of xDSL on E, since this mounts your xbox E drive to /cdrom/. Thus, putting the files on the root of E requires you to run a frugal install of xDSL from E.

Big bug here: since /cdrom/ is mounted read-only, you cant change ANYTHING in windows. (qemu would try and write to "/cdrom/win98.img" but its read only!)

Short: frugal install of xDSL on E, files in root of E as per tutorial, enter command (from xterminal) "sh /cdrom/98.sh"
Scrufdog
i have a loopback install. so I just changed the load command to reflect the directory the files were.

Now the problem I am having is once I run qemu the first time, windows runs great and such......but after I quit out of it, and shut down Xdsl, it wont boot up again with getting errors. I can run xdsl just fine if I never run qemu, reboot, shutdown, over and over, with no problems.

I get the following error.....

INIT: PANIC: segmentation violation at 0x804e19a! sleeping for 30 seconds.

and it repeats.

If I just kill the xbox and reboot, then I get a bunch of fsck (i think) errors and a prompt that wont accept input from my keyboard.

any ideas?

Scrufdog
Everything is working great now. I reinstalled one last time, adjusted the 98.sh file to look where I wanted it to look and everything is great.

Now, lemme check a few thigns with anyone who wants to read this....

1. Once running. windows will only recognize hardware that X-DSL recognizes...

2. There is an accelarator for qemu but you have to do some sort of compiling to get it work?

3. Can the X-DSL kernel be easily recompiled to use the 2.6 kernel to give added support for USB device?

1. The tut is on the PSP site because it's a PSP guy who discovered the trick.

2. I know it's a bit off topic, but because QEMU emulates a 'whole' computer, is it possible to emulate a XBOX on a PC?

3. I installed Win98se (98Lite) on QEMU (on my PC) and it went well. My windows booted on QEMU without any problem (exceps pretection errors sometimes). But when I try to boot it on the XBOX (XDSL 640x480) the booting screen continues forever (I waited 10 minutes) or it freezes or it comes to a black screen and QEMU say 'QEMU (STOPPED)'. I tried wits 16 24 or 32 meg of memory. I have an XBOX 1.0 TSOP flashed.

i think there are a few experimental xbox emulators in development right now. do a google search for "CxBx". that emulator seems to be coming along nicely.

is there any way to install 98 entirely on the F: partition? or at least without touching the C: partition?
