I am Convinced That HD Model drastically effects upload speeds

So far I have installed 5 chips with 4 different types of hard drives, I have also “set up” each one of these boxes so I know the approximate FTP speeds sustained and peak each was able to provide… Here is what I have seen.

Note: All test were performed using flash FXP as an ftp client. The hub/switch used was a linksys BEFSR41

WD 80gb Special edition 8mb cache (my box) = 10000bps avg download / 5000-6000 peak upload

Maxtor 120gb 2mb cache = 9000 avg download / 4500-5000 peak upload

Maxtor 80gb 2mb cache = 9000 avg download / 5000 peak upload

And the Astounding Drive award goes to:

IBM Desk Star 120GXP drive series, 7200RPM Model number IC35L080AVV07-0
10,000-11,000+ (12207.03125 = full 100mbit speed… one must leave some in for overhead)

And get this… 7000k upload speed with no pauses (all of the other drives seem to have a distinct .5 second or so pause every 10-15 megabytes or so… seen through evox byte counter) Perhaps it is utilizing the cache in correctly? The IBM seemed to just get a SOLID stream of 7000k.

I almost want to take that WD 80gb 8mb out of my xbox, add it to my raid array in my PC and go buy an IBM!!! Feels like that drive was meant for Xbox!

Anyway… I hope this info helps

Data transfer rates on the hard drive will make a difference. Good work!

Some say that using an 80 contact IDE cable it'll speed things up a bit as well.. I haven't tried it, though.

Not just a difference... A very considerable one:)

I have tried it… I swear that I did notice a difference ( I did not record any data though)
All illogical as it seems (the HD controller is only and ata-33 so they say) I really though I saw a difference in Halo load times… Arg.

try it with a crossover cable and see what happens, cause i have a wireless connection and i only get 400kbps but with a crossover i get around 10000+ with a stock drive.

tongue.gif um i have kind of a question on all this stuff. for my FTP i use 1 pc which has switchable xternal harddrives. both are 60 gigers, and my xbox 1 is 120gig. when i ftp to my xbox using windows 98 i get about 10 mbps, but when i only switch the harddrives and load up xp using the same hardware as far as NICs go, and it transfersa at 0.001 kbps. i dont even know if that is a fucking bite?

i tried turning the xp firewalls off and i did it, but no difference. oh i am using WS_FTP_PRO

use flash fxp...

All other FTP apps i have tried do very strange things...

I got similar transfer times with the wd 80 gb w/ 8 mb cache. It was faster than any other hd so far. I also used a IBM Deskstar 45gb but got slower transfer rates than wd. Moreover, the wd is silently quiet during operation.

Thanks for the post, can you confirm that this drive is lockable and any issue about overheating or noise ?

Thanks dude!

Confirmed... Upgrade your exhaust fan power line to 12v to cure any cooling issues

I will never trust an ibm drive ever again. Supposedly they have fixed all the problems on thew new drives (ie the ones made by hitachi) but it would take ALOT of convincing to get me to ever buy one of them again.

Hi i have a maxtor 80 gig AT D540X-4K 5400 rpm, model 4k080h4. I wanna know will the fact that my hd is a 5400 affect me while playing a game or will it only affect the copying time to the hd. Another question does the xbox come with a 7200 hd or with a 5400. thx for ur time.

ive found that the ftp program has alot to do with it also.
flash ran very slow but when i took the exact same setup and ran it in
ws_ftp it started to fly.. i mean from say 2000 kb/s to 10,000 kb/s
good luck

has anyone tested the 120 gig IBM Deskstar from the 120GXP series? Cuz its only 103 on pricewatch, and I want one! lol

Like sorienor, I will NEVER trust another IBM drive again. Not after the 75GXP and 60GXP problems.

Theres a reason they're so cheap now...IBM's HD sales have dropped dramatically after their reputation got damaged by their shitty drives. (Their storage division has also merged with Hitachi now.)

I'm using a Samsung 120GB/5400RPM drive. I use Bullet Proof FTP and I average 13000kbps/DL and 5000kbps/Upload... going thru a Netgear switch connected to my Netgear Router....

Just my 2cent info... laugh.gif

I was also wondering about whether drive speed (7200/5400) or cache size(8mb/2mb) has any appreciable effect besides upload/download time and heat?
