Are the LED and HD activity wires required to be soldered? Or can I just not solder them and live without the LED functions?

they do not need to be soldered
but they look cool!!!!

No, they don't need to be installed... But I don't see why you wouldn't. I mean they're real easy to solder. Unless you already have LAN and HD LEDs...
