Most lead free solders melt, I think around 420 degrees F(270 C ?). You can do just as much damage to a board with a 15W iron as a 50 watt iron. I think the important thing when buying a soldering iron is to spend a little extra money and get one that will allow you to control the temperature. A solder station usually gives you a temp range of between 250 C to 480 C. The wattage is important, but not as important as the temperature. I use a station, 50 watt and solder quite successfully around 310 C. You can find these in the $30 range on the net.

Hahaha, yeah ditch your nice temperature-controlled iron for a piece-of-shit iron!!

For xbox work, stay around 650 - 700F (350 - 370C)

yes 15 watts. Ive used higher and it started to deform the PCB.

I've gone through about 4 of those POS radioshaft 15 watt irons.. I should just crack down and buy a variable wattage/temp station. Anyone have a direct link? Ebay has more crap than good with s search.

well i had one of the shitty ones, and it worked fine. but then my dad's work threw a shitload of them away, and he got some of them for free. his work bought newer ones. i like it, and it works good.
