Mr. Fish
ok, so i was told that dvd2xbox is illegal, but i thought that it was legal put it on ur xbox, but it is illegal if u used it for piracy

someone plz help me to clear this up.

thanks alot.
cmiz
it was compiled with the XDK (AFAIK) and is therefore illegal. it's a homebrew app though, so the usual places hosts it.

FYI the XDK was the xbox developer's kit which was stolen from MS and hence, is illegal to use.

DVD2Xbox is perfectly legal, the only case in which anybody would say otherwise is if you use it to rent games and rip them to your hard drive, that would be illegal. It is legal because it is freely distributed and not sold, which does not constitute copyright infringment.

Dark_Woofer
The 2 are right

The program is ¨legal¨, but downloading it is illegal since it was made with the XDK
Mr. Fish

The program is not legal , I do not know what people are talking about . Anything not approved by MS and compiled with their developer kit is illeagal . You can compile it yourself if you own a XDK .

well flashing a mod chip with a bios (besides Cromwell) is illegal, and he is most likely doing that, so i dont know what the big deal is.
cmiz
well...i'm not saying i'm morally opposed to it, but he asked if it was illegal, and YES it is in fact illegal for the reasons mentioned above. anything compiled with the XDK which wasn't cleared with MS first is illegal. even if you OWNED an XDK legally, you couldn't compile it without their permission....and for some reason i get the feeling that they wouldn't ok that...
Mr. Fish
thanks alot guys

all modded xbox software is in fact illegal - it is all based on the codes originally made and copyrighted by MS, but the breaking of the law for using it is much less serious than if u copy a game illegally.
lordvader129
well as you can clearly see its a legal grey area at best

some contend its legal since its homebrew uncopyrighted code

otehrs contend its illegal because it was compiled with stolen dev tools

so there really is no answer here, but you can rest assured your not gonna get arrested for having homebrew apps on your xbox
ERROR: Your Xbox Has Died
Xbox2Dvd = illegal

Easy test for xbox software, Does it run on an unmodded box?

Answer.

Yes; then it is 100% legal as it has been signed by M$

No; then it is probably illegal as it has been compiled with the XDK but not signed by M$

As Lordvader said nobody's gona come looking for you for Homebrew software, hell where would m$ get their best ideas from????

a quick comment...xbox linux, nkpatcher etc are all programs which run on an xbox but were NOT built with the XDK. they are built with open source knock offs or straight up ASM....so it is perfectly legal to run those. (there aren't many though wink.gif )

i believe an open source dash is still in the works...
