@korn: Use WMP11 instead of Zune. ( Unless you have a Zune?? ). I know the 360 gives u a link to put in your computer and sends you to Zune land.. but Zune looks to me like wmp11 with different windows. (Which I am sure it is.)

@Every1:

Well, zune appears just like WMP11 for the most part within the 360. The bad side is that it will ONLY play windows video files (wmv/etc and actually mov's, too) You cannot play AVI / XviD / OGM / MKV. I haven't tried all AVI's, but then again I uninstalled zune and started using TVersity. It works well at what it does (transode to an asx/wmf playable within the 360 (streaming)...as probably mentioned a hundred times in this thread (Didn't read through it.)

So if you have lot's of avi/mkv/ogm(xvids and the like), your s**t outta luck unless you transcode. (As far as I know....) Damn XBMC360 would sure be nice right about now. With XBMC I could watch streaming video straight from avi/etc.. barely any overhead on computer. Another bad problem with TVersity is it is a total CPU cycle hog while transcoding. Since almost all my video is xvid or 264, etc, this poses a problem (like if someone wants to play a game). XBMC could browse for a video and play it and you could still be playing Oblivion or something across the room the video was playing from! Since I don't think in a million years M$ will put anything resembling an ffdshow codec pack in the box we will all suffer. Ahhhh have get my chipped Xbox1 back on!!

BTW if your having trouble with TVersity it seems like the main problem are ppl trying to (transcode) play xvid's(and above). Make sure that the service is running either as YOU (with pass entered), or if LOCAL Service, I clicked "allow to change desktop", and picked Haali as the splitter for everything (including avi's). If you run as LOCAL service it seems to have trouble if using certain avi splitters (permissions I guess?)
Also try reinstalling ffdshow and haali spliter and you should be in business.

I was reading that they are looking for developers for xbmc for linux. Until then I think we are stuck in WMV land.
At least it's something.

i believe you can just use a cross over cable. its an ethernet cable, except pairs on the pins are reversed.

1. Halo hacking is not to be discussed here.

2. it seems the 360 itself as of now can only play WMV/WMA and MP3. I've tried Zune, it refuses to even list anything other than Windows Media and MP3 in the library, let alone stream it. I've also tried putting a video on a USB stick in a multitude of Plain-Jane formats, AVI, Mpg1, Mpg2, Mpg4 and WMV. WMV is the only format that it would list. I have the feeling this is gonna take more than a PC side solution.

Just a quick thought, if someone would like to try and take something in DivX/XviD and change the Extension and the fourCC/Header to match Windows Media and see if they can force play it. lemme know how it turns out.
WMV is basically AVI with a different header (or so im told). it would be a lot quicker to do that than sit there waiting 4 hours for a movie to re-encode.

Do a google search for VLC360. It runs on your PC and opens under Media Center on your Xbox 360 and lets you stream just about every media file on your PC over your 360. You can access every drive on your PC to stream files.

And to CrazeFatman you can use the ethernet cable that came with your 360 and yes you can connect directly to your PC. I found it easier to use an extra ethernet card to connect your 360 to and use the ethernet port on your motherboard as the primary connection for your internet. Then you can access your files on the pc and share the internet connection through ICS on the PC. It is covered on Xbox.com.

I kept my original Xbox with XBMC, I've got all my vids and music on a NAS drive networked wirelessly, I already knew this was the sad state of affairs, you'd of thought that M$ would have learnt from the original Xbox, why didnt they just put Windows Media Player on it and be done with it, its these sort of ideas they have that guarantee it being hacked, personally I wouldnt touch XP media centre edition with someone elses barge pole it is truely awful like vista, I guess we just let M$ keep having there silly ideas and we'l get on and get it to do what it should, My satellite receiver is cleverer than a 360 when it comes to streaming.
I guess if it did have useful functions we'd have nothing to figure out. laugh.gif

Ok, I need to the the opposite of what this topic said.

I need to get something from my 360 to my PC. Is it possible?

Thats right, I need to move something from my 360 over to the PC. I have looked around the net for anything that relates to the subject matter, and the only thing I can find is PC to 360. I can do that, just not the other way around. I'm sure its possible, just can anyone figure it out?

Are you talking about copying something from your 360 HDD to your PC? There are a few solutions for this, namely connectivity kits to interface from the HDD to your PC.

okey dokey you can get the sata adapter for your hard drive and use xplorer360Xtreme2 to rip data from the drive to PC. I take my Hard Drive apart everytime and hook it direct to sata on my motherboard and that works great and cheap. smile.gif

After reading all the interesting information, I seem to be able to relate to the situation even tho I am not a 360 owner.

The other week I bought a Pioneer 250 GB HDD recorder with built-in SD tuner. It has a USB port for pluggin in USB keys containing music and another USB port to plug a computer into (the big square type of port). Once I setup the connection b/w the recorder and my PC, I was able to copy media to the recorder's HDD which was gr8, using Windows Media Player 11 ONLY. Note that the recorder appears as a ReadOnly USB device on my notebook in Windows Explorer.

Now I wanted to place my collection of DivX files on the recorder's HDD so that I could watch them on the TV (it supports reading of DivX off the DVD drive) but the manual, and my testing, proves that it would not accept any media other than music. Damn. I can only copy the video recorded on the HDD to a DVD using the recorder but as yet un tested, I can not tell you what format it is recorded in.

I was so cheesed off at this stage. I realised that for the money I paid for the recorder, I could have put together a media PC which would have had network access, USB for all media types and I could do what **I** wanted with it. Ow well.........back to the original topic. mad.gif

A great way to share data from your pc to your xbox 360, is Tversity. It's awesome. Very easy to install and use. Their website is
CODE
http://www.tversity.com/
and their forum's can be found at
CODE
http://forums.tversity.com/

I download a lot of movies. I am able to watch them now on my TV. All I do is add my Movie Folder where all my videos are saved to Tversity.

I believe you have to delete Media Center though in order for Tversity to work.

You can also add Video URL's, Live streaming movies and music, pictures, mp3's, folders, etc...

It's an awesome program that works great with the 360 and I suggest you download it.

Let me know what you think!

Take care,

There is a free program called Orb that allows streaming media between different computers and is compatible with the X360. It allows you to play any video or audio format on your computer too.

I use Tversity.

100% goodness. I stream to 2 PS3's and 3 360's. Works flawlessly. Try it!

Yes they are all some good aps. The easiest one to use now though is simply an updated version of Window's Media Player 11 for anyone on a XP system (As posted above). This is a free M$ download.

Some little things to keep in mind however. If you were previously using XMC (xbox media connect) this will be overwritten upon installing/upgrading to WMP11. As such you will have to re-set up your sharing options between your 360 and PC. It will also only support playback with 360 compatible codecs (i.e. xvid, divx and wmv), it will not do any conversions for your on the fly.

Orb and Tversity etc may be preferrable for other unsupported codecs etc, I haven't used either of these for some time (Since the 360 Divx and Xvid codec update), so am not too sure on their support of the other codecs at this stage.

thr4773r
Have to add another for Tversity. Seems a lot more reliable than WMP 11 to me. I would occasionally have a loss of computer error with WMP11, but not with Tversity.
Your media, if not the avi xvid or dvix compatible will be transcoded to play. Can't do that with WMP.

Also cool.gif I can play Shoutcast through Tversity. Also, can't do that with WMP.

Hoping that the 360 gets closer to the original xbox as far as media playing and streaming capabilities. (ADD MKV!!! for one)

Yes. The update is a Divx/xvid codec media update. It will allow your 360 to view the divx/xvid encoded media. I would definitely update while you can, because if you ever were to be banned in the future, you wouldn't be able to download this update.

Hi guys,

Not sure if this is quite the right thread...

Just bit the bullet and got myself a nice new 360 pro (decided Id had enough of my old XCRate).

I have a Maxtor MSii NAS on the network, laptop can see it fine.

The 360's on the network fine (can access web / LIVE),but it cant see the NAS.

Is there anyway to get a 360 to see my NAS, stream stuff off it etc, or do I get to take the 360 back and get a WII instead?

I dont have (or want) Media Center, and I dont want to leave a PC on 24/7 - which is why I got the NAS.

After using XBMC for ages, must say Im not overly impressed with the "limitations" of the 360 (I dont want to hack around with it - yet!).

Any help much apreciated - I only want to stream off my NAS, how hard can it be? wink.gif

Thanks in advance...

Quick question I have recently bought a terabyte external hard drive for my music, movies and TV shows is there a way that I can stream the music and videos to my 360 with out having to transfer them to my PC. Any movies or music I have on my PC I have no issues with but I can not find my external drive when I go to the video section on the dashboard.

thx for any help.

is the partition ar hdd a fat32 format? Note if you format in fat32 the single file size is limited to a 32bit allocation size. max is 2.2Gb I believe. Also you wont be able to format the entire drive through windows by right clicking and selecting format. it wont give you the fat or fat32 option because windows needs a 48bit allocations size 4 thatd rive. you will need to use an application or format through command line. Acronis disk direct is what i use for such things. works great and easy to use.

Tversity works great for me and sets up pretty easily too. My only question if some that has gotten banned in this recent banwave does streaming media or playing media off usb get disable like the hard drive is getting disable. I was wondering if anyone has tried to do either since being banned? Any info this would be awesome.

hard drive doesnt get disabled. Profile gets corrupted but deleting the profile (not the items) and doing a restore gamertag on another xbox will fix the profile.

Does anyone think this will work:

IF i use my non-banned HDD on a banned xbox my data will be corrupted. The problem is i have DLC on my non-banned HDD that i want to use for backed up games that i play offline on the banned box. Would putting my data from the non-banned HDD on a PC, then transferring it to my banned consoles HDD allow me to use the DLC with it?

For example i have GTA backed up and want to use the DLC that i have on my non banned HDD with it. Will this method work?

It didn't stop working due to the dash update. It stopped working because you didn't have the Divx/Xvid codec licenced to that xbox, meaning it won't work while not logged onto live. So I'm assuming that harddrive used to be connected to a previous xbox. Unfortunately now it's banned there is no way of assigning the licence for that codec to that xbox (You could have re-assigned the licencing whilst unbanned, which would mean it would still work now).

The harddrive will work on another xbox if you are signed into live with the Gamertag that downloaded the codec initially. Or you can create a new tag and download the codec onto that new xbox and it will now work again on the new xbox (and whilst offline in the future). There is no way to get it working like this back on the banned xbox however.

Your other option would be to use a program such as Tversity on your PC to connect to the various devices, transcode all the media into .WMV and send it through to the banned xbox. (That will allow you to once again watch your content on the banned xbox). The thing to keep in mind is that the banned xbox will now only support .WMV playback, so all media will need to be transcoded to that format. (This doesn't apply to anyone that has licenced the Divx/Xvid codec to the banned xbox).
