XBOX was fine last night when I turned it off. Turned it on today, and everything on the screen is kinda scrolling really fast / flickering and black & white, kinda hard to describe... I can tell it boots up, goes into avalaunch, etc... I can even run games or applications (hard to tell what Im doing, but it does work)....

I checked all the cables and stuff. Tried booting into flashbios (x3 chip) and it still doing the flicker thing. So I tried booting w/modchip disabled (holding power button). It starts out flickering during the xbox logo and stuff, but when it gets the the service required screen, the text is fine, screen no longer doing crazy scroll flickering stuff. [The service required is 05 cuz the HD isn't locked, not a problem.] The reason I mention this is cuz this shows the screen can be normal...

Ideas? Is my XBOX broken?

to describe the "flicker" its kinda like macrovision, or somethings set to PAL, or scrambled cable tv, that kinda thing

sounds like your xbox has switched to another video region.

are you using the standard av cable that came with your xbox? if so that is the problem as your av cable will only do your region. are you trying to play games from another region? games from another region will always be displayed like that through the standard av cable.

when the xbox is starting up hold the white button to go into x3 config live and set the region to your home region and reboot the machine that should solve it.

the best solution would be to buy a RGB scart cable that will allow you to use all regions with no black/white and scrolling so you can oplay imports without having to physically change the region of your xbox.

hope this helps

Might be hard to navigate the X3 menu if you've changed the region there, so just use the Quick Swap.

"Video Region Quick Swap (L TRIG+X NTSC, L TRIG+Y PAL - hold on bootup)"

More info on X3CL here: http://www.ixat.info/X3/

sweet didnt know about the quick swap!

Thanks for the ideas guys. I'm using the standard AV cable, the one that has three RCAs (video, right & left audio).

I can get into x3 config, but as suggested, it's impossible to navigate with the flicker.

I tried booting with left trigger+x but nothing happens differently... my chip is regular x3 (not x3ce) if that matters.

Maybe you have an older X3 bios that doesn't support that feature.

Not a problem. Here's a link to a blind-navigation thread I posted:

That should sort you out.

Here's another reason why I dont think it woudl be a setting in X3 Config Live... cuz if I boot to flashbios (by pushing power/eject together) or w/modchip disabled (holding power) it still is messed up, even during flubber and startup screen. The only time the screen ever appeared normal was booting w/modchip disabled after the flubber and startup screen when it went to the service required screen.

any advice would be great. I guess I can try taking out the modchip to see if that fixes it but I'd rather not cuz with my hd unlocked I wouldn't be able to use the box that way even if the screen is normal, and I can't lock the HD from flashbios with the messed up display.

You wrote that while I was typing. Anyways I have X3 Bios version 3029, which I realize isn't the newest, but on the link provided above to documentation, the docs for 3029 say that left trigger + x should work... but I'll checkout that blind navigation stuff anyways, I'll try anything.

FIXED! That other thread had the answer.

I had to push left-x while in x3 config live, not while booting.

Thanks again!

I wonder how that got messed up. That the second time in the last couple weeks that a setting changed on my xbox by itself. A week or two ago half my games quit working, and it was because somehow parental control settings had been changed. I had to run ms-dash to fix it, although I never normally use it, so dunno how it got messed up. Same exact thing with this problem, I never normally use X3CL so dunno how it got changed.

I think someone must be sneaking into my home while I'm sleeping and changing my settings.

Spider-monkeys. It's always spider-monkeys that screw with your stuff, not gremlins as is commonly assumed.

Glad you got it working. I'll have to get a hold of that guide maker and see if he'll correct that bit of info.
