After Trial and Trial i got SC running on XDSL via wine and battle.net.. I only have time for a rought SC tutorial perhaps someone will write a better one for me..

This tutorial is for loopback or native installs of X-DSL.

Frist you need to install wine.. I have tutorial somewhere on here look at that..

Next you'll need to get starcraft.. Take the CD and make an ISO place that ISO file in F.
then download sc-113.exe patch place that in F.. You'll need to download a starcraft no cd loader.. Since it is illegle i can only tell you to do a Google Search :-)

Load XDSL mount f
mount /dev/hda55

cd in to f
cd /mnt/hda55

make a new tmp dir
mkdir /mnt/sc

mount the iso to the tmp dir
mount -o loop starcraft.iso /mnt/sc

cd in to the tmp dir
cd /mnt/sc

run the install
wine install.exe

install starcraft where ever you like prolly best for C:\program files

now go back to F
cd /mnt/hda55

run the new 1.13 patch
wine sc-113.exe

let that finish

now run the BWloader
wine BWloader.exe

Enjoy starcraft..


Now there are some problems the video runs pretty good.. But wine doesn't like battle net as the text over laps and the images don't show up.. I'm trying to find a way to fix this so bare with me.. I'll try my best to anwser questions as i can.. Good luck ;-)..

There are programs out there to hack and change Starcraft's fonts.

Give 'em a whirl. I dunno where, Creepcolony.com is probably your best bet for such a utility.

When I try to install Wine it says "Some packages could not be installed" and then farther down the page "wine: Depends: debconf but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libwine (=0.0.20020411-1) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: xbase-clients (>= 4.0) but it is not going to be installed or xcontrib E: Broken Packages "
That may be too much information. Please help =(

I dunno why it's not working.. i wonder if you have dep's not resloved? Perhaps friedgold can take alook at helping you resolve the deps.. Mine did it auto.. BTW did you make sure to do apt-get update when you added the wine stuff..

Yes, I've done apt-get update and upgrade a few times.

Keo, are there any free iso-making tools out there?

when i type mount -o loop starcraft.iso /mnt/sc i get an error saying: mount: you must specify the filesystem type. help anyone?

wouldnt let me edit the post above. i got starcraft installed but it has a direct draw error because it cant switch video modes to 640 x 480 pixels. now can anyone help me?

You have to use the BWloader otherwise it won't work at all!!!

PS there are ways to edit wine to launch in certain ways you'll have to look them up! :-( my package comes with the wine cfg tool and the wineloader so you can custom config how stuff loads..

Nice tut Keo-Keo, Im able to play starcraft, BUT after playing for about 10 minutes, xdsl hangs, it just stays there... i've tried several times and it hangs after 10 minutes. both in campaign mode and in network. i was playing against my cousin, i was on xbox he was on pc. any toughts???

Yes it does freeze after a while. And darnit, you beat me to trying to LAN a PC and xbox. Bispoo, what OS was your computer running?

Hmm i didn't test it that long.. Do you have a swap? Seems to mee that starcraft asks for more memory but isn't getting it.. WHen XDSL runs outta ram it freeze's Make sure you have a swap file.

Ok i got wine and starcraft running fine and dandy but is there any way to fix the screen, cause it kinda overlaps over the edge, so i can't see my minerals, and some important parts of the screen.

sure i have a swap file. and a big one. For the lan question, My pc is running windows xp. I was playing Perfectly. now,on xbox i cant play more then 10 minutes.... i disabled the animated portraits to see if it helps, but no. same. one thing... It isnt't xdsl that hangs, it's wine. I can change desktop after that and kill wine.

It's possble wine needs to be setup.. Looks like a program called winesetup might be the anwser. I'll look into this.. You'll have to give me some time.. This could also help with the fonts and such in battle.net too..

i have winesetup keo-keo, i have everything configured. i also play commandos 1 with it.

still nothing egh? I'll try to make some time tonight to see if i can't solve this problem ..

i think i've found the problem. Dsound.dll something to do with the sound. im gonna play a little with the dll to see if i can solve the prob.

Thanks.. I turn my music off just because it plays faster in XDSL.. Also when using a loader you need to copy the music to your HDD other wise you'll have to mount the SC CD each time..

is it normal for it to ask u to install lots of things like bison/flex and other packages beforegettign wine to install?
i got thorugh most of them installing them from source just so i could get wine going but the last one stumped me , i couldnt find it anywhere
it told me something about not having x or xterminal?? i just need help getting wine to work. and what about wine x? that any better or should i just stick with regular wine?

No, we have had problems with wine. Use winex, with Keo's tutorial on this forum.

Xwine shouldn't have icon's did you test wine? Or get program not found? Otherwise your out of space.

ive started over fresh for this starcraft business
i deleted all previous attempts at xdsl and everything related ,redownloaded it(most recent version), installed it, performed loopbackinstall and got my self max space (2 gigs)and havent filled up really any of it.

are u saying that maybe it got installed but it stil lcame up with that error?
hm i didnt think of that well thanks for the thought ill go ocupy myself with that for a while saee if i can get another program to work

but if it doesnt what else do u suggest? any packages i should have before trying to install winex? as soon as i got xdsl installed i enabled aptget and it d/led an updatge or something through wget. anything ewlse like this i sahould have and install before folowing your tut and getting wine dsl to work?(if it isnt already installed like u mentioned )

1: installed xwine successfully
(cant configure from winelauncher(says cant find wineconfig or a file it needs(i made a blank doc called wineconfig and stuff got wrote into it so im not sure what its looking for) and dont know how to configure it any other way)

2:made iso of sc cd and got bw loader and sc-113.exe and all req. files and installed sc sucessfully

3:when i go to run sc by typing wine bwloader.exe it tries to load it aparently but cant, heres what i get:

--in bash(under root):err:virtual:ProtectVirtualMemory unsupported on another process

--windows looking window saying basicaly the same thing: System warning: your system does not seem to be configured correctly.... and it says to make sure that i have at least 20 megs free on my hard drive.... and it tells me to check virtual memory settings..... all in the same windows lookin window. it gives me the option to continue with sc anyways or quit so naturally i prayed to god and hit continue but it then said....

--could not load neccesary starcraft files please insert starcraft cd.... blah blah u get the picture i mounted cdrom but if i hit enter it goes away and comes back instantly, obviosly not even trying to read the cd(it takes some time to check(and how the heck do u open the drive after u mount it cause the button sure doesnt do it))
