Since so many people were having issues with wine i went ahead and made a xwine.dsl package.. The problem is i'm not home so i can't test it.. Though it might work with a live CD i wouldn't recommend it because it's 13mb's.. Which you need all the ram you can get!

Open up a terminal (Right click Xshells Rxvt dark!) NOTE! This will not work with root so don't attmept make sure to use the Rxvt light or dark!

Next download the xwine package from my server (will soon change to x-dsl.org when i have time to move it!)

wget http://x-dsl.org/downloads/xwine.dsl

now load wine

mydsl-load xwine.dsl

Now wine should be up and running! Lemme know if this doesn't work.. Cheers

all that happens when i type mydsl-load xwine.dsl is the screen refreshes. is this right? if not what am i doing wrong?

Thats all it's supposed to do.. Now to use it.. At a command line type wine (somthing.exe) NOTE this has to be typed in XDSL not from a ssh session as ssh is looking to forward the GUI to your desktop.. Since you not running linux or a X11 session you'll get errors If you wanna run an X11 session do a search and you'll find an easy tutorial by me ;-)



Sure i use ultra ISO which isn't free but has a trial that doesn't run out.. The trial locks everything except making the ISO :-)

I get a specific error which seems to halt wine from actually doing anything;

error while loading shared libraries;libwine.so.1;cannot open shared object file; no such file or directory. Any help?

can you be more specific? was this while installing wine? Was this while running an app in wine?

I used xdsl-load on xwine.dsl, and when I attempted to load bittornado.exe is where I haad trouble, so this was while running wine.

in order to install windoes programs off of cds, do you have to make an iso of the disk first?
is that how you work this?

Is there any possibility I can dl it(winex) and burn in a cd so later I could install via DVD-ROM drive in xdsl? I only got dial up in the moment...

thebucketmouse seemed to get the wine package to work.. remember you have to run this from a loopback install DO NOT RUN FROM LIVE OR FRUGEL!

I think the problem was he attempted to run wine.dsl in live mode which unpacks to 50mb's! too much for the ram so the deps don't work! I figured that i did include the deps? But with out testing it on the xbox it self i coudln't be too sure..

So how do I get out of live mode? Wizard needs MIRC badly!

k i dl'ed the package and tried to "mount it but i got this error message... any help?

then it told me that it didnt mount it and i dont think it installed

i dont mess with my linuxbox much, but the other day i booted it to find that all the apps i installed under wine were mysteriously missing from /program files.

also, any new app i install also was not showing up, and thus not running scince i didnt know the name of the .exe i was soposed to run.

anyone experience anything like this?

Wine isn't suppossed to show up in the menu if it is your using it wrong (your using it as a live .dsl it's too memory hungry).. Wine doesn't have some sort of GUI at all.. To lauch a file simply time

wine (nameof.exe) in any command prompt (except when you ssh in )

problem is that i dont know the name of the .exe files because i cant see them in the /program files folder. maybe i just need to get wine again

also which user did you install the file via? root or dsl? root would be /root/.wine/c/
dsl would be /home/dsl/.wine/c/

In XDSL you get 3 diffrent Xshell temninal's light dark and root dark.. If you installed wine as root dark then it's root if you installed it as light or normal dark is user dsl.. Wine is setup for mutiple accounts meaning if you installed somthing as root only root can use the install program.. Or if you installed somthing as DSL only dsl can use it (wine looks in your home dir) for root thats /root/ for dsl it's /home/dsl for any other user it's /home/(username)

sorry for my stupidness lol i figured out what u meant in like 2 mins after my post,went to go try it , but same error about the icons

but i did go and look around in emmelfm for anything it installed and sure enough it dumped alot of wine files in usr/bin

2 of wich did something very colse to running:

1. i ran winelauncher from emmelfm and it brought a up a window that had green text saying that i launched wine with out an argument or a .exe after it
sdo i ran it from 'run program' under dsl menu thing and typed the name a of a d/led .exe and it again launched it but came up with same window saying that it couldnt find the wineconfig file in the PATH or any where it was supposed to look
and xdsl doesnt seem to grant me axcess to /usr/bin and wonmt let me write files to that dir or hange names of files in that dir. i did the su root then it asked for pass, i put it in and nothing changed, still no way to make or rename a file to wineconfig (just for grins tosee if it would gewt any farther)


2. winebrowser or something like that brought up a window explorer kinda lookin file browser that would let me pick a .exe in the loopback and run it, or so it said
i havent tried this one but i have a feeling it does the same thing as running winelauncher with an argument. if im wrong plz!!! tell me!!

im still stuck as far as xwine goes some plz help me!!

Your making this wayyyy to complicated.. just use the terminal.. wine nameofexe.exe don't use wine launcher and such.. Wine is config'ed out of the box in the .dsl extension..

Your not helping me help you.. Do this.. install the wine.dsl listed above then try to launch a .exe with it..

I just don't see whats so complicated with this.. So far i've tried and tried to repulicate your errors? Is there somthing in the directions you don't understand?

Download wine wget http://project2k.net/xwine.dsl
load wine mydsl-load xwine.dsl (your screen should flicker)
run a program wine /path/to/exe..

If A PROGRAM doesn't work with wine you'll need to tell the people at wineHQ since i have nothing to do with the development.. Sometimes programs need tweeks to run so check out wineHQ on the app database on how to get them to work.

EDIT: Wine folders are hidden to view them in your home directory type ls -a in a command terminal

1: installed xwine successfully
(cant configure from winelauncher(says cant find wineconfig or a file it needs(i made a blank doc called wineconfig and stuff got wrote into it so im not sure what its looking for) and dont know how to configure it any other way)

2:made iso of sc cd and got bw loader and sc-113.exe and all req. files and installed sc sucessfully

3:when i go to run sc by typing wine bwloader.exe it tries to load it aparently but cant, heres what i get:

--in bash(under root):err:virtual:ProtectVirtualMemory unsupported on another process

--windows looking window saying basicaly the same thing: System warning: your system does not seem to be configured correctly.... and it says to make sure that i have at least 20 megs free on my hard drive.... and it tells me to check virtual memory settings..... all in the same windows lookin window. it gives me the option to continue with sc anyways or quit so naturally i prayed to god and hit continue but it then said....

--could not load neccesary starcraft files please insert starcraft cd.... blah blah u get the picture i mounted cdrom but if i hit enter it goes away and comes back instantly, obviosly not even trying to read the cd(it takes some time to check(and how the heck do u open the drive after u mount it cause the button sure doesnt do it))

In my last post i told you not to use winelauncher (DON"T USE IT! ;-) )

second did you close everything after install starcraft? IE stracraft update and stuff..

third and very important do you have a swap file? If no then it will not work.. You'll need to make at least a 128 mb swap file for it to work properly

sorry about the flooding, just really want this to work.

i have to go back to work but i will try this later, im guessing though that the swap file is made the same way the loop back is made through the right click menu>apps>etc..

if im wrong let me know so i dont go screwing something up lol, and just out of curiosity what is it that a swap file does? does it make fake virtual memory or something??

and will the insert cd popup go away after this is done also??

ok i made the swap file and redid the installation up to the point of doing wine install.exe
where the play starcraft window came up, so then i tried to run bwloader.exe and in bas i still get the err:virtual mem crap but starcraft doesnt, it comes up with another similar window saying that i need to switch video modes to 640x480 and color pallete to 256 colors.... arent tv's by default 640x480? i dont have hi def or anything maybe theres something i didnt do?..

well the insert cd window didnt come up but im not sure it ever got that far this time so help stil with that to!

You might be running in 800x600.. i wish i had more time to help fix this issues (hell i havn't turned on the xbox in a week) I'm prepareing for my trip and time is getting shorter and shorter.. Perhaps i could create a intensive step by step procedure on getting SC working.. This includes the loopback to the swap to video and installing wine.. I'll look in to this futher when i get back.. Expect somthing closer to the end of the month or early september..

When i type in mydsl-load xwine.dsl or mydsl-load (location of file) it comes upo with a error message saying "Please mount media containing opt dir the try again" why is it saying this, i know it is not doing this just becauseof xwine because when i try to download uci files it says the same thing.
