I've got a working xbit, must be version 1 as got it as soon as it came out. My xbox also has a larger HDD installed (using SLayers Evox as dash).

I'm now wanting to go on xbox live and obviously dont want to get banned!

Am I right in saying that I just need to put the chip in stealth mode (can someone confirm which dip switch I use for this?) and then the xbox should boot up as if the chip wasnt there? I've heard about locking the HDD, is this necessary as well?

Thanks for any help

Edit - Oh I assume once I'm in the original xbox mode any game backups wont work?

On the 1.5, it's DIP switch 4 on=stealth mode. I believe the 1.0 should be similar.

This totally disables the modchip, so no, no backups will work.

Thanks, does anyone know about the HDD issue?

Did you purchase your HDD and install it before July 2004?

If so you can just turn your chip off (and lock HD) and go on live - and no, backups will not work.

Did you install it after July 2004?

If so you need a new eeprom (check the by and sell forum). This eeprom must be ntsc (if your in USA) or PAL (if your in europe) and must be the correct one for your verison of xbox. Your HDD then needs to be unlocked (it will be already if youve never done it), then the eeprom needs flashing with the ConfigMagic app, then the HD needs locking (if you dont your xbox wont boot with chip off).

You need to check the pinned posts in the XBOX LIVE FORUM. The info I've just posted may be incorrect for your setup. Post in the right forum and check the tutorials on this site!
