i have a laptop connected to the internet via wireless router. i have no trouble connecting to my xbox when it is plugged into the router, but i cant use it whilst it is plugged in because the router is in a completly different room with no tv. so im unable to take full adavntage of it whilst it is connected. one solution i could do is get a very long rj45 cable and run it through the house except nobody in my house wants this. so i was wondering could i directly connect it to my laptop and have it use the internet off of that.

internet
|
router----------laptop-----xbox
|
other pc

so it'll work somthing like that.

if anybody could help me with this i'd apprechiate it
thanks

Get a wireless gaming adapter for the xbox.. it cost a chunk of change but will be worth it for your situation.

as for your question.. yes, you can do that but it is not very reliable or stable. You can use ICS (internet connection sharing), share out the wireless cards internet to your laptops nic, put a crossover cable between the nic and the xbox. You should be good to go (get a switch or a hub if you dont have a crossover cable)
dfk789
i'd been looking at the wireless gaming adapters but as you said they do cost a bit and im young without any kind of income tongue.gif .

i do have a crossover cable a very short one but it worksso how would i go about sharing the internet because for some reason i cant create a vpn and what kind of ip gateway config would i need on the xbox?

and oh yeah im running UnleashX

xbox.. set it to DHCP,

WinXP (If that is what you are using) you need to go into the network window, where is list your wireless card and your nic, right click on the wireless card go to properties. You should then see a sharing tab, check the box to share the connection. (im repeating this from memory)

It will give you some message or whatever... plug the crossover cable in.. and it should be good to go.. but as I said it is very buggy.. so you may have to point your laptop in a differnt direction in accordance with the day of the week and current moon position biggrin.gif

no sweat... you will need to make some changes on your router. If I remember correctly ICS wants to use 192.168.0.1 on your local nic, and 192.168.0.2-whatever on the other machines that are connected. So if that is waht your router is spitting out for ip addresses that is the problem.

Best thing to do is to reset your router ip to 192.168.2.1 or 10.0.0.1 and change the ip brodcast range to the same.

That should get you around that problem.

EDIT: before you cahgne all that post the output of ipconfig
dfk789
i cant seem to run ipconfig something wrong with my command prompt. something about s32evnt1.dll an instable virtual device driver faild initialization
but hopefully this will help
*edit* forget that i got it working 1 sec

Yeah.. thats what I thought, you will need to do what I said above. Yes it will effect others internet access until the other machines are rebooted.. once that happens they should be fine.

Check the documentation for your router on how to change all that stuff.

glad you got it working.. The ftp deal may be a little more tricky.. you are going to have to tell you FTP program to use your nic as your network instead of the wireless. I don't know how to do that in whatever software you are using.. I don't even use windows myself biggrin.gif

If you switch to linux I'll let you know how to do it:D

Most LINUX distros do NOT like laptops... or the laptop doesent like linux =P

What apps are you connecting with to the xbox -- Xbox dash -- Pc FTP App

Not going to argue with you.. but you should do a little more research on that.. 3 years ago that statement would be 100% true wink.gif

I can probably do a little research and get the answer once I know the ftp software he uses.

The Xbox's IP will probably not show up. You need to make sure that you set the IP right in your FTP program (get a skin with the IP address on it)

You have to make sure all the IPs are in the same range (I.E - 192.168.1.xxx)

Hope it helps.

I dont see anything on the interweb about configuring flashxp to use one nic or the other... Jackaround with the settings see if you can select the other nic somewhere.

Worst case.. disable your wireless card reboot.. make your ftp changes... enable to wireless and reboot again.
dfk789
sorry about the long reply again... (got kicked out my house tongue.gif ) smile.gif but anyways
i have it all sorted now i just started with out the wireless card and messed around with the settings ip settings on the LAN and the ip on the xbox but had to change it to a static ip but its all easily changeable biggrin.gif .
