hi everyone
i'm new to this whole modding scene, i actually just picked up a used xbox, and i have 14 days to return it if not satisfied (not satisfied means for me, that i cant mod it the way i want)
here's what i intend to use my xbox for:
i am wanting to use it in my car, as a way to hold music (mp3's, wma's, etc). i will install the audio to my cd player, the video to a LCD, and work it thru the controller
my question is this...
what's going to be the best/easiest way for me to accomplish this?
try to install linux on it? just cop out for a bigger HD and run it as a normal xbox?
also, this is critical for me....since it will be going in my car, and my eyes need to be on the road, i really dont want a full blown operating system, where i'd have to use a mouse and keyboard...something extremely simple...
can anyone out there help me?
i'd appreciate it

.. WEll you have 14 days to void your warranty most likely.. which includes you modding it. Unless you dont open it and do a softmod. But that will blow (in all honesty).. you wont be able to fit much on the factory hard drive.. you will need at least 40gigs or more.. In my situation i Have over 160 gigs of data on my xbox. That does haowever include about 7 retail xbox games that I own. YOu will want to use XBMC as your dashboard to be able to *easily* listen to music, play movies and games..
So to answer your question:
Mod it, Softmod, chip, tsop
Xbmc Dashboard
AC inverter to get power for it in your car
Larger hard drive unless you have a dinky little music collection.

Xbmc Dashboard
ok, thanks....
now...what all is involved in a softmod, chip, and whats tsop?
i'm a PS2 guy, i have the slim edition, so i'm not to hip to the xbox lingo...
what would i have to go about doing?
and yes, id be swapping out for maybe a 40 gig or 80 gig HD
after the modding, would it be able to play mp3's with the "stock" menu that it has now?
i guess u can really tell the noob factor of myself....haha

Modchip or TSOP FLASH (as you aint gonna be playing live) if its not a 1.6 as I don't think they have tsops to flash.
Get XBMC with Project Mayhem 3 skin as it's just fucking cool.
And why not go for a 240gb hd and put some movies and on that bitch aswell?
Just don't do what someone else did and remove their airbag to put the xbox in the area... that's jsut dangerous.
And ofcourse, don't watch movies whilst driving.
Just what I would do.

You'd need a new dashboard (not in your car

, the menus are called dashboards)
As it's going to be for media, I would use XBMC as a dashboard instead of an using it as an app.

could anyone tell me, or link me to, a page that would tell me this stuff in detail?
before the xbox, i was considering building a pc to put in my car, but that was gonna cost a heck of a lot more than the xbox
and the unit will be going under my seat....i'll have to dremel the case a bit, but it'll work just fine
and yes, the primary use of this device for me, will be a hard drive for music...maybe games/movies, but i dont really care, i'm just a music fan, and it'd be awesome to have all my tunes under my seat...
so you all are saying i'll have to get a chip...now, which chip? and would that allow me to play/store my music?

I would get a doux v2 (since it is cheap), and you will have to solder it in (don't go solderless, as they are a pain when the xbox is not moving). Flash that with 4981 if you do not have a v1.6, or flash with m8+ if you have a v1.6 (since the config live screen takes a bit longer to load on the 5035)...and use a 512kb bios. Find out how to use xbins to get the programs that you want. You will probably only need XBMC and you may want DVD2Xbox on there. Check some of the tuts to see how to set up the hdd.

You need to find a proper bios and bios tools. The bios is on a previously mentioned place. The bios tool is on the homepage under either software or tools (I can't remember). You need to get XBtool if using 4981 (an xecuter bios) or EVtool for m8+ (an evox bios)

You could, but that is to transfer music from mp3's directly to WMA's that the xbox can use...problem is, you need to be able to FTP them to your xbox (I think, or maybe it reads them from mp3 discs?) Either way, your xbox will have to be modded. Also, using the xbox dash to play music kindof sucks...especially if you are using it in a car.

If you're not going on live or anything then flash the tsop! No need to buy a modchip!
Don't let it sound too confusing, it's really not.
One thing at a time.
Go here and check your version:
http://xbox-scene.com/versions.phpAnd if you have any soldering knowledge or know anyone that can solder, do a tsop flash!
(Just my opinion, as it's free and you don't have a reson not to do it. And as you're going to hane this in your car I wouldn't recommend a solderless install, therefore you're going to be soldering anyway so a tsop would be fine.)

how do i flash something?
what would i be doing?
Winchy
Aug 2 2005, 12:13 AM
You flash the bios.
Real easy, epecially doing it by http if you're xbox is hooked up to your pc
If not a bios cd will be fine.
You just select the bios to flash the chip with and wait while it does it.
That's it
P.S. TSOP FLASH!!!

is this something i can go to a website and download?
my xbox isnt hooked up to the internet, i'd be doing it via
download from internet to laptop, burn to disc, insert in xbox?
that correct?
can u point me to the site with the TSOP flash?

Yeah, more technical than that but that's the jist of it.
I've not personally performed a tsop flash myself yet, but I am going to soon.
I think each method is different depending which version you have (note I said I THINK).
Take a look at some of these tuts:

Well you need to be able to flash it before you download anything to flash it with.
I'm not sure about tsop flahing *hint* someone help me out here *hint*, but I think you need to flash it using a gamesave exploit so you have ftp access?
Maybe if you need that you'd be better off with a softmod.
I just prefer modchips and tsop flashing as many of my friends with softmods have screwed them up.
But if you flash the tsop it will be a lot easier to upgrade the hard drive.
