This is my first poll, but i am just curious to how many people use XBMC as their dashboard! I think its better as a dashboard then just using it as an App!
pike
Me thinks results will be slightly biased. But you'll know how many XBMC users use it as a DASH, not how many XBOX owners pop.gif
celinedrules
It depends on what hard drive I have in. If it is my muisc or my movie hard drive then I use XBMC. If it's my games hard drive then I use UnleashX.
Advanc3d_T3ch
I use xbmc for the hell of it.
THDVL
XBMC all the way.
killerbootsman
I use Avalaunch because of Qwix and Speed-Boost during FTP.
incognegro
I swear, unleash has to be the most popular dash! It places high in every poll, even in biased ones like this one.

I used it for awhile, because you can download game saves straight to your Xbox.

i use evox, i tried xbmc as my dash but in game reset didn't work so i changed back.... guess my bios doesn't support it

just wondering - what is qwix and speed boost? is it built in to avalaunch or is it a separate app?
Synops
i use Evox as my default, for games, and hombrew, etc. and i use XBMC for video, music, movies, images, etc. if i boot to chip it goes to Evox, hold down right trigger i get XBMC tongue.gif
Antwan666
I used to use Unleash, but I found that XBMC was personally better.

I switched to XBMC about a year ago, and have been using it ever since.

Qwix is a game manager for windows. It's proprietary. Speed boost is a non-standard FTP extension built into Avalaunch. In theory it could work with any dashboard, but Qwix detects it by checking to see if the dashboard is Avalaunch and won't use it otherwise. There are other features of Qwix that disable when you're not using Avalaunch, for instance the installed game list.

Other clients implement speed boost, but I can't be arsed to look up which ones, nor if they detect it in a better way than checking to see if the dash is Avalaunch. Any client that says it supports 'Avalaunch features' probably supports speed boost (Avalaunch's other FTP feature is to offload querying some of the .XBE information to the server side, preventing wasteful downloading of .XBEs; to my knowledge, anything that implements this also implements speed boost).

Speed boost works by batching all the file upload requests in one burst at the start of the upload, rather than one before each file. This can improve your upload speed significantly when uploading thousands of small files; it's negligible when uploading files larger than a megabyte or so.

An old poll on the x-s main page (over a year ago) placed XBMC @ ~25-30%

The majority had Evo-X (not strange as most cd/dvd installers one year ago only had Evo-X, but very soon all those we are used to now came).

Dashes as MXM etc are getting forgotten by alot of newcomers and that is realy a shame....

Evo-X is perfect to begin with, but many switch after just a few days/weeks/months.

I seldom play games on the XBox, so Unleash-X gamemanager etc aint realy intresting for me personaly, and as i play mostly music and videos XBMC is a very natural choice for me. (Especially as i update and play with it on almost a dayly basis) tongue.gif

EDIT: Mixed UIX and Unleash-X For a seconds...

XBMC as my only dash all the way
porsche6714
I use evox as my main dash but I use xbmc as an app very often. I like evox becauseof the IGR. I would switch them but I guess I don't really care enough to do anything.
Tranman
UnleashX for my "home" system because I like having the game preview videos...but I use Xbmc for my car system since its nice having access to music, videos, and games from the same dash.

I would get a BIOS that have IGR instead...

UnleashX,

I wouldn't want to have the risk of screwing up my softmod (no Softmod vs Hardmod flames please, 50 bucks is a lot of money for what you get from a hardmod) everytime I update XBMC besides that running UnleashX has the advantage that I can turn off XBMC FTP server and it's easier to upgrade XBMC.

Not to hijack the thread, but if you or the one doing the softmod, used one of Krayzies installers (simply the best imo) the read THIS thread.

XBMC lover here. When I first modded my Xbox and installed UnleashX, I thought it was the dashboard I would ever need along with Avalaunch. But after seeing XBMC on Xbins I started fiddling with it for a little everytime I booted my Xbox (back when Project Mayhem I was the default skin). I became so used to it that I made it my default dashboard. I guess this is like meeting a girl and talking to her everyday then you & her become boyfriend & girlfriend then husband & wife biggrin.gif

When it comes to modding other customers Xbox consoles, I show them the differences between UnleashX, Avalaunch, and XBMC. The majority (about 95%) choose XBMC to be their main dash and Avalaunch for Xbox-to-Xbox transfers smile.gif
pcrat
I Use evox. But i use xmbc for movies, music,. pix etc, yada yada. I would use it, if ya could use it as the straight up dash if it would load at boot up.

I have all 3 dashes installed tho evox. ( my main ) unleash X ( my second choice ) and then avalaunch. 3rd choice. pop.gif

Ummm...you can.... there are lots of tuts on here showing you how to set it up, if you cant figure it out.

XBOX to XBOX transfers works perfectly in XBMC roc smile.gif I was a tester and transfered 400gigs of assorted stuff with no errors

Auto detection also works fine

It's good but the only drawback right now is the one-way transferring of files. Once the support for transferring files from another Xbox to mine gets working then XBMC will have everything needed without launching another dashboard biggrin.gif

Of course i'll need Avalaunch to update XBMC wink.gif
BritneysPAIRS
One way means xbox you are playing around on filemanger cant affect other one, so you can only kill the one you are controlling.

smile.gif

other way you could kill there xbox
pre1014
heh, ava update; you are funny tongue.gif
igr = can do it with the right bios
boot to right dash = you sir need to learn how to read tuts
ftp speed = i dunno, i can get the full 100Mbps out of my network using xbmc and filezilla client.

as far as i'm concerned xbmc can do everything that i need it to, and is much sexier than everything else. I just can't for the life of me understand why a person would use something like evox when there are things like xbmc. Haven't used the others, but have absolutely no reason to....oh, i use dvd2xbox when i am updating xbmc tongue.gif
Scrufdog
Evox is my main dash, but I end up being in xbmc more often, so I may be switching.
Jezz_X
I got UnleashX on my main box hat I use for gamming/testing and XBMC on the one out in the lounge that I use to watch videos with

I use to have Avalaunch as my main dash, but I soon switched after noticing that I started up XBMC almost everytime anyways. I've been happy ever since.

Has anyone else just stopped using their xbox for xbox games altogether? Ever now and then, I fire up an ol' emulator, but I haven't played an actual xbox game for atleast two months.
j_guzzler
Yep, way too busy right now to actually play xbox games, i keep getting the new ones, but never play them, its all movies/music for my xbox....and XBMC is the main dash as it has been since day 1 (well maybe less an hour, since it came with evox as the dash).

I'm totally the opposite. I couldnt care less about my dashboard really, because i go straight to the games menu.
Lazybones
If XBMC had video previews for games I might use it as my dash, but UnleashX just seems to be better for application selection and fast file transfers. I also like the general layout of most UleashX skins over other similar dashes such is Avalaunch.

Evo is a image with a list in front of it, if it wasn't the default dash of so many installer, and didn't have the soft reset feature that seem to lock so many users into using it (because they don't understand how to fix it), I don't think it would be popular at all.
madsci1016
i had evox and found myself just going to xbmc to play video half the time, so i changed to xbmc and saved myself time. going to donate as soon as i get more money.

lol I know what you're probably thinking JayDee... I use Avalaunch's available builds of XBMC... nooo I compile my own builds wink.gif

I use avalaunch for it's fast FTP transferring. But since someone menotioned using DVD2Xbox to update XBMC, I might give that a try.

EDIT: Just checked and Avalaunch still has May 2 up for download blink.gif
JayDee
Thought so!

Made me abit worried for a minute wink.gif

I have to say that xbmc has come a long way and proved itself as the best dashboard cum media center there is.
Used Unlesh mainly for game saves and the text edit function. Both of which are available as scripts on xbmc.
Use EvoX mainly for the trainers am still to see what xbmc will do about this, there is a great app coming out real soon from what I gather from exored and team executer.
Xbmc works well with my remote and lcd.
In terms of functionality,well
Kai

Me, it's ace. I've only use EvoX and XBMC, but i don't see any need to use anything other then XBMC (Not right now anyway wink.gif)
Xandalus
Evox was my first dash, but then as soon as I put a power button on my communicator adapter and nolonger needed evox for igr, I switched to media centre.

Now the only other dash I touch is avalaunch for boost transfers between the xboxes at my house. XBMC is my multimedia centre, and alarm clock too!
oswald
evox was everyones first dash, it was out a long time before the other dashes really, and was used in all the early installers as jaydee said. thats really the only thing it should be though, even the things it does well, other dashes do way better now.

mxm was the king for awhile as far as I'm concerned, it was a sweet dash with a very nice community behind it, and a very dedicated single developer. but sadly, the inherent fault in one dev is a no fault tolerance, and as development waned, mxm faded into obscurity. this wasn't helped by the fact that as it slowly lost momentum, unleashx came out of nowhere.

unleashx grabbed the best of all the dashes (quick menus, video backgrounds and icons, gamesave downloads, avalaunch boost mode, xml customization, mp3 playing) and served as my main dash for most of all of my xboxes lives.

but, as I began to play with media more, and I had more places to watch it, and once I started recording with Windows MCE, it made no sense to use anything but XBMC.

Theres a few things I miss about unleashx enough to keep it around as an app forever, but no other app, dashboard or otherwise, can compare to the sheer breadth of features XBMC has.

Other dashes and ms dashboard replacements will come and go, but unless they offer something very radically new, for me there will be no reason to run anything other than an XBMC dash from now on. But if you're in this forum, you can more than likely assume that will be the eventual case for everyone.

So yeah, short version, XBMC.
webMASTER P
i see pretty much no reason to use any other dash besides XMBC. Everything is there at my fingertips.
i'll boot inot avalaunch everyone in a while to tranfer and ISO wuth QWIX, makes it fast and simple, and to do a clean install of XMBC.
Zanzang
I use XBMC as my main dash for my media (I have every free episode Rooster Teeth Productions has ever made), and for Xlink Kai.

I use UnleashX as an app for its amazingly easy and fast File manager, and for my cool fight club skin.

I use evox for trainers, and (as of today) flashing new bioses.

I love my current configuration in a very non compusexual way.
kimgitz
if u are looking for a launcher then UnleashX is the best for both games and other applications. It is highly customizable with downloads for skins, icons, previews and updates. it gives u infor about the applications like saves title and stuff.

While it takes the lead as launcher, xbmc is great for media, playing music ,videos, streams, pictures etc muhaha.gif

i once had one bios bank to load xbmc and one linux and one unleashX thats how confused i was loved them all. jester.gif
rramoutar
Most times when I am not playing a game I am using XBMC. However I cannot see XBMC being my primary dash. I tend to update XBMC quite often...and sometimes the builds just do not work out well. If XBMC were my dash it could make it a big difficult to get my XBOX booted again...would have to dust off my AID CD. I use EvoX...it ain't fancy...but it does...it does well and reliably. If Chokemaniac would make a project mayhem III skin for it...that would just complete my themed XBOX (I tried...but I am not very talented wink.gif ), since Jezz made thet lovely skin for DVD2XBOX.

Thanks Jezz...it's a nice skin...I am going to switch from Project Mayhem II for awhile and see how I like this skin. I had a different idea in mind...I was trying to make a skin out of one of those darker wallpapers on Chokey's website (the one with all the cubes).

P.S. Sorry for being off topic

30 lost souls using evox as dash... ohmy.gif
TrueWarlord
I use XBMC as my default dash and Evox as my secondary dash (eject-on). After reading this thread I'll be checking out UnleashX and may be replacing Evox from it's prized position.
