just got back from a meeting where we got to play the 360. i took some interesting shots. i'm gonna go ahead and post a shot of the power supply, since i think it's worth noting the size.
also, the hdd is a 2.5" SATA drive we learned. just thought that was interesting.

i've got some other shots of the system and the interface blades. not sure if i can post 'em yet.

Yes, I have seen that PSU but I heard that was not going to be the final PSU for the retail product.
I guess we'll see later on.
To anyone who wants to see the pic; just replace "pics spammed from this source" with the Imageshack website and it will work.
I don't know why XBOX-Scene hates ImageShack pictures since that is the best free picture hosting website.

Oh, if it is, I'll just have to hide it somewhere.
I actually prefer having the PSU externally since it is easier to replace and makes system smaller.

ah now I have something to beat n00bies over the head with when they say that the ps3 has better hardware... WHAT'S BETTER THAN A POWER SUPPLY MACE OF N00B SMITING +27? Nothing, thant's what.
But yeah that thing is massive but I am glad that m$ has decided to make it external so heat and size can both be kept down. I would like to know if that thing is cooled by fins or something else.

What about the Atari 2600, or the Turbo Graphics 16? There are probably many more.
It simply makes sense, with the supply on the outside of the case it reduces internal temperatures allowing for better clock speeds and more space to allocate to bigger chips.
In addition it also makes it easier to service the console, the cost saving are used to keep the price of the console down. If 4 years down the road your power supply fails it is something that the user can replace without replacing the entire console. The power supply is one of the main failure points within the console.
The reason that the supply is so big is because it need to output 3 different voltages, it is like three power supplies in one. I don't know how much smaller they can make it, maybe a little bit, but the x360 probably has a fairly high current draw which would limit how small they can make the package.

the power supply is huge, but atleast it doesnt have to sit right next to the console, and i have plenty of room behind my tv for that...
and as for no console having external psu's..almost all systems had external psu's....nes, snes, atari 2600/5200/7800, gens, master system, n64, gc, the smaller psone and pstwo, and you could continue for almost ever...
i see they made it external to make it smaller, but i wonder how much more heat that would have made.

It's not like you're going to be lugging that thing around with you every where you go. Some people might, but the vast majority will install it and leave it alone. I'd rather take up less shelf space with a smaller unit.

Chances are also that retail stores will carry replacement PSU's when they're external so replacing them will be a snap. Unlike the current Xbox where you have send it in to be repaired or order online and wait to do it yourself.

Why is everybody talking about the power supply. Did you not read what he said in the first post HE PLAYED THE XBOX360!!!! So why is nobody asking him how the graphics look during play or how the games actually play, or even how the controller feels with the white and black button on the top?????????
Sheesh, you guys need to get your priorities straightened out. I mean really, complaining about the power supply, I couldn't give a cr@p about the power supply.
So come on guy who started this topic and answer my questions.

hahaha.
ok, so the graphics are pretty sweet, of course. certainly guess you didn't notice my shirt said MS, so i might be biased. anyway, played PDZ for a while. it's pretty great. although i had a hard time getting used to it. it feels a lot like... well, like Perfect Dark on N64. just seems a little rigid. the ONLY problems i had with the game was the lighting and a little AI trouble. the scenery is fantastic, but the lights tend to flicker as you walk... meaning looking at an overhead light fixture, it seems to go on and off as you move quickly. the AI kind of seemed to forget i was there every now and then. now the copy we played was 90% complete, so it may not have been where it should be, but that was about the only issues we had. the zipline idea is really cool.
also played Full Auto, but i wasn't impressed. i don't like twisted metal and the vehicles/scenery seemed surreally shiny.
played Kameo, which was pretty fantastic, definitely something you'll wanna pick up.
played call of duty 2. another fantastic title. very intelligent AI. they picked up a grenade and threw at back at me. jerry bastards.
i also played TH american wasteland, but i also met the producer, and he was so good at that game i didn't want to play.
played other games too, but i can't remember what they were. it was a crazy week.
1 game to look out for: Prey by Take2. Prey looks a lot like .krieger, but prettier. really, Take2 has a solid lineup (Oblivion, Prey, etc.) and unlike EA, Take2 employs people who are definitely NOT douchebags.
buy Take2 games! and PDZ and Kameo.
controllers are decent too. feels a lot like controller S, but much lighter. the guide button is genius. you can pull up the 360 menu while in game. you can also turn on your 360 with it.
but the coolest of all? the kiosk for the stores. it's beautiful. great guy, Jake Jacobson. he designed 'em. they are perfect. they also have a memory card port on it. you NEED a memory card, and here's why:
the kiosks have a port so you can bring in your mem card and d/l from the kiosks. why is this cool? because each company (target, best buy, walmart, gamestop, eb, etc.) will have exclusive content you can ONLY get by bringing your mem card and downloading from a store kiosk. isn't that cool?
let me know if you want to hear more.

I have to say I was starting to get let down by the 360, but now hearing about it makes me excited again. Just one question though, since you work for MS, I was wondering how they feel about the modding community. It has always been my belief that they really enjoy modders taking something they make and making it better, and it also lets them know what we want in their next system such as incorporating the power button in the controller.
Also, when are all the BestBuy's and such going to have displays up so we can play the 360?

Tell me it didn't look like ass....
What were the weapons like? Did they feel weak likle halo 2's or were they the great ammo guzzling, kick ass weapons like the original perfect dark?
What weapons are their? Can you have split screen co-op? How many bots?
More info please!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

we're putting up displays this month. and, i can't speak for MS on the whole issue of modding, since i'm pretty low on the hierarchy. i will tell you what was told to me from the (very very) higher ups.
modding isn't illegal. MS does not support modding, but unless it is being used for illegal purposes (copying games to circumvent purchase), MS doesn't really actively pursue. however, someone with a modded xbox has abilities others don't, and that makes them a danger on Live, as well, they have broken the Live agreement, and so they are banned.
i hope you guys reserved your 360s. and you should've reserverd the $400 one. free media remote and headset. really nice headsets too, they have volume control based off the bottom.
the live marketplace is gonna rock... but i don't know how they'll keep it from being corrupt for long. here's why:
i believe 1200 or 1600 points, can't remember which, costs $20 USD.
you can only get info from your MC. the system has 3 USBs, but they're read only. i do, however, know it's possible to write with the USBs on some level but i can't say "how" it happens. all i know is a little change in the software - or hardware - and now we have read&write usbs. so now you can transfer all your live save data via USB to your PC. i'm sure there will be some system of lockout like on the first xbox, but the design of live is dramatically different now.
So, while you won't be able to copy your points, since those are account points, not local to a save apparatus, you could copy the content you paid for and redistribute it. now i didn't get to mess with Live, so this is a possibility... but i'm not sure.

to the guy asking about perfect dark:
PDZ looks fantastic. fan-fucking-tastic, to be exact. like i said, the light flicker bugged me but it was also on an LCD screen (blows goats, btw).
the weapons are the old skool weapons too. that means i get to kick your ass with my RCP-90 again. when you carry that you walk a little slower too.
how many bots? we got 30 playing 2 player split.
also played co-op a bit, but since it was unfinished we froze the box doing that.
aside from the light and a few times when i would reload and see my gun through my own head, this is a great-looking game. definitely the Goldeneye of the 360.
plus, if ms. joanna dark sells a lot of titles, rare will pump out a couple more. this is a big target for MS, so if joanna dark reaches a higher playing field, like master chief, we'll see more of her.
ps.- did i mention the kiosks are going to have samsung wide screen lcds on them? those bad boys retail for $1100.

To be honest with you I am not so happy about that memory card junk for exclusive content. They should make it available on-line not at some kiosk..If i but the 400$ version dont make me go on a mission for content..Thats should be for core users if anything...

Cheers mate!
Can't wait for the X360 and perfect dark.
The kiosks will never make it to the GAME (major UK gaming store company) store where I like. We have a 42" rear projection TV but that is about it in my store.
The guys at GAME didn't even know what a skart cable was so I doubt the x360 will be optmised for the scree they have.

i can understand that, but if you think about it in a corporate-tool sense...
1. it gets people into stores, where they'll look at other products.
2. touching the demo means they'll probably play the demo, seeing more products.
3. people will also be able to get their updates there if they don't have xbox live (possibly, not decided yet).
4. i get a free memory card because of it.
ok, so that last one isn't really fair, but if you look at it, it's actually a very unique and, unlike nintendo's unique ideas, interesting idea. (i'm not knocking nintendo, but, come on... gba micro?)

you guys are responding quick!

LCDs suck for in-home use. yes, DLPs rock. however, for the purposes of HDTV display units, having a lightweight and smaller-screen LCD is a pretty good deal. i really like the idea of having the display in HD, even if the screen is not what i wish it to be. however, HD is better than non-HD, so i support the decision. for the home though... definitely DLP.
Ozy- MS is using the same kiosk style throughout the world within the next 2 months or so. presently MS has produced 18,111 kiosks.

of course, that's for the US, since we're first on the list. and 3,085 go to everyone's favorite store... wal-mart!
if i could send you pics of the best buy kiosks i would...

i'll try and find out if i can send the standard kiosk pic out.
