i have a v1.0, and the HDD is out of commission. i am also going to install a Xenium ICE, could i mod the xbox and swap the HDD with a larger HDD, even though it is currently failing?
Do i need the HDD at all? untill i swap it

You don't need the original hdd...

yeah you need the hdd to run the xbox.
But you'll be able to burn a boot disc and install the hdd upgrade easy once you get the chip installed.
