My Xbox itself has a TSOP flash, but I've modded Xboxes with modchips, softmods, and TSOP flashes.
I think that a TSOP flash is the best mod, because it gives you all the functionality of a modchip, but you don't have to spend a dime.

What can a modchip or TSOP flash do that a softmod can't do. I love my softmod and I didn't even have to open my xbox to do it until I put a bigger hard drive in. How can chipped xboxes still go on Xbox Live without getting caught? Even if they disable the chip won't they still get in trouble for having a bigger hard drive inside?

Got them all, modchip, tsop and exploit.
Exploits are great, if you know how they work. Screw it up and you better have a copy of your eeprom (dunno why people dont back it up on their pc´s!) or know where you can order a chip.
TSOP:ed boxes i like alot, but only 1.0-1.1 (1mb flash), as 1.2-1.5 "only" have 256kb. (I remeber the first xbox i tsoped, a friends, and i used it to test my soldering skills on. Still running a x2 47** bios along with the new x2 5035

)
Tried alof of chips and i have chips from almost all groups installed in my boxes, but i find myslef playing alot with the softmods nowadays.

I guess since I only use XBMC to stream video ndure is fine. I don't know why I would use anything else.
I have 4 XBoxes, all modded. 1 XBIT, 1 DreamX premod, 1 X3, and 1 ndure which I just figured out how to do and will be doing exclusively from now on.
I got a refurbished box at Gamestop for $99. For all the things you can do with a modded box I can't believe the sweet price.

yes there is a lot of support around modchips because most of us installed way back in the day, and to tell the truth i didn't know about exploits and all that till months after.
plus common its easier with a chip, takes 20 min to install, software is ftp over and its done, yes turn off the chip and your on live.
Everything works as it should and no worries of fucking it up.

Right now, I haven't yet modded my XBOX.
I purchased a Xenium Spice which arrived recently. It's still in its original package but I going to have it installed real soon so that I can install a bigger HDD in my XBOX so that I can have emulators & X-DSL on my XBOX.

Tried Softmod. One word, crap. Too many things can go wrong if your a complete newb. And even if you understand it it takes just one deleted file to render your xbox useless.
Did a TSOP with a switch so I could run two BIOS's. The solderjob was REALLY easy, really if you are beginning at soldering, do a TSOP. But I didn't put a heatsink on my MXPC and it blew.
Then put an Enigmah in my one of my older boxex a few years ago and never turned away from modchips again. If you have the money, a modchip will do you good.

Lots of stuff. Read more about the features of a modchip and their related bioses. (not being mean here...I think you'll find it interesting.) One bios manual:
X3 for example.

The bios for the x3 chip has a feature you turn on that disables connecting to Live! so you don't accidentally connect with your modchip turned on and get banned. I think other bioses may have this feature too.

See the previous reply. If you don't try to run modded content (read: cheating) on Live! they don't check your harddrive partitions. You have to be careful though and there is no promise that they won't start checking some time in the future just to be mean and kick more people off.
Booting up with your modchip turned off means the XBOX bios only sees the normal drive partitions. M$ would have to do to try to detect the mod. There could be many reasons they haven't started actively searching for disabled mods. I'm glad they don't. That would be horribly crude rude and crass.
Personally, I don't like Live!. I like choosing my own matches from XBConnect and XLink KAI, however there are other threads for debating that. I like it much better, though.

LOL , I feel your pain buddy, but I feel its probably more down
to your soldering skills , or lack of them.
I have done TSOP's flashes as well as fitting Xeniums, Xecuters and
SmartXX's.
If I am fitting a modchip then I like it to have its own built-in
o/s makes things so much easier and lots more recovery options.

I've done all three
My first Xbox was an old 29 wire homebrew chip...
my 2nd Xbox had an enigmah... then I upgraded my homebrew to an Xecuter 1.1 for a bigger hard drive and later both of them to X2s so I could could upgrade my bioses.
Past that I've done mostly TSOPs and one or two exploits just to try them out.
I'm a big fan of a completely stealth install. Meaning that once a console is modded it should run unsigned content as if that was it's original function.
Because of this I don't really care for exploits, it's a hassle and it's a fairly fragile install. It's an interesting technique and it has some benefits but it never felt like something that should be a permanent solution to me.
IMO TSOP flashing is the best solution 90% of the time. The only times I think you should use a modchip over a TSOP is
1. If you're using a V1.6 Xbox
2. If you want to use XBL and homebrew/backups on a V1.2+ Xbox
3. If you want to use one of the newer X2 bioses on a V1.2+ Xbox
4. If you want to use a Character LCD
5. If you're a developer and need the bios management options a modchip provides
Despite that I think it still makes a small number of people... and certainly some of those reasons aren't worth the $60+ some people pay for their chips when their are fare more inexpensive solutions.
TSOP flashing is free and IMO the amount of functionally you really gain from a modchip is minimal in comparison.
Still I voted Modchip just because that's what my first mod was.

My two xboxes are both softmodded with uxe, since I was offered mechassault...
Not a single problem with it!
I even managed to put a bigger hd in the second one (yeah, only a 80gb, it was the only hd that I had available...)
If something goes wrong, I can still buy a chip, but as of now, i didn't had to pay anything for my mods...

I was just curious if there was anything people with modchips actually use that people who softmod can't use. I mostly use my xbox for backing up my games to the hard drive and playing them from there, watching videos from XBMC, and loading all the homebrew apps like emulators from Unleash-X dashboard. Do you play your original game disks on xbox live or do you play those games from your hard drive (if thats possible)? If xbox live doesn't check hard drive partitions then wouldn't softmods be able to go onto Xbox live without getting caught, even with a bigger hard drive? Stuff like this is what I was curious about.

Xenium Ice Sodderless. I just didn't trust myself to sodder it myself. I had a cold soddering iron and a to scale photo I took of the contact points and I just couldn't hold the iron steady enough to stay inside the points. If it would have been real it's a safe bet I would have ruined more then a few traces.

I can make com cables and BNCs but theres a lot more at stake with the xbox then some cheap worthess cable.
All that matters though is that it works.
