I just finished reading the Anandtech article and this might be premature.

Tthe xbox 360 is advertised to read a wide variety of media.

I know people have hacked the Samsung drive, etc.

Now being the 360 DVD drive is SATA there are SATA to IDE converters.

The 360 proprietary power connector looks very similiar to the xbox connector.

The 360 comes with an Hitachi-LG drive.

Can anyone confirm if the 360 drive is a sister model of the Xbox H-LG drive?

Also being that the 360 can read Xbox DVD's, it would further lead me to believe the swap is possible with the SATA->IDE adapter.

Can anyone embelish on this idea?

Nope, 360 is SATA and XB1 is PATA

Interesting line of thought... but.....

Why on earth would you want to put an Xbox 360 drive in a regular Xbox?

Well I talking in terms of media compatibility.

If it's a sister drive to the xbox version of the Hitachi-LG drive. This could be an easy mod if it's possible to get the drives.

If the power connector is the same it would be a matter of using a SATA->PATA adapter and that's all you would need.

This is what I'm referring to, http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku...re=Bytecc%20Inc

Now depending on how the 360 drive is designed, hopefully the power is being supplied the same as the xbox.

Probably not....we will find out soon im sure biggrin.gif

If I could get my hands on one I would definitely try it.

I'm installing an xbox in my vehicle and want to be able to read any type of media when necessary.

$150 for a modded DVD rom is a bit steep in my eyes.

150 is steep yet 400 for the xbox 360 to take the drive out (makes it Useless) isnt?

You could mod your own....cheap if you don't need to read originals.
s1w
That's my point exactly.

I could get a modded Samsung for $150 that will read originals still.

Or....

If I could get an xbox 360 drive somehow I will try it with a SATA->PATA adapter.

It's still PC architechture so I'm almost sure it will work with no problems.

People adapt IDE hardrives and DVD drives to SATA all the time.

From what I can see from the 360 tear down tutotials.

The xbox 360 uses a Hitachi-LG drive, Model #GDR-312OL possibly.

There is some other numbers on it.

MFG Date: September 2005
Rom Version: 00460H

I'm going to do a Google search on this.

@s1w
you could mod a h-lg gdr8163b, and it eve reads originals (i use one myself on my "macgyver box")

using one of those SATA->PATA converter things and probably rearranging/possibly changing some voltages of a few pins, you probably could get it to work. how you are planning to get a xbox360 dvd drive for less than 150 im not sure, but if you find somewhere let me know lol
diablomastabarb
if you get it to work you so have to post a tut muhaha.gif

I emailed Anandtech.com today and I'm just waiting for a reply to see if they are interested in trying this.

Hopefully they're game for it.

Wait I thought the xbox was ide.
Or is pata another word for it.

I've never heard anyone here on the scene call ide pata. What the heck are you guys talking about.

Dude its enough to buy a cheap 20$ lg drive that can be modded from newegg.com.

for 20$ you can have a drive that reads everything and even originals with a little modification and knowledge and solder experience.

But if you get a SLIM drive that would be sweet for a SLIM Xbox!
I have put a laptop HD in a desktop before.

s1w
Yes I have also wondered why no one has tried that yet.

But people are missing the point on this.

I already know you can buy an LG 8163b and mod it to work in an Xbox.

I'm trying to come up with a Plug'n'Play solution. Something that does not require soldering, etc, etc...

You could technically throw any IDE dvd-rom in the Xbox but the problem is reading the original discs.

Sure I could rip all the games to the hardrive but I won't have any free space left for use.

So that being said, this is why I created this post.

If the Xbox 360 drive is a glorified SATA Xbox drive then it will be a Plug'n'Play solution.

RvN
IDE is Parallel ATA... hence PATA. It didn't really start being called PATA until Serial ATA came out... or SATA.
s1w
Thanks Rvn...

Here are some good shots of a PATA(IDE) to SATA adapter.

So you would connect the SATA cable from the 360 drive to this adapter and then connect a Male to Male IDE cable from the adapter to the Xbox IDE cable.

I use the ATA-66 cables in my Xboxes to increase the data transfer rate.
