hey i got this from another forum so no credit goes to me...

Well sort of ...

I was messing around with the Media Extender interface on the X360, and noticed that the "More Programs" linked to a couple of apps installed on my PC as part of the Media Center Package, including MS Instant Messenger and some other stuff. All of these run when you access them from the 360 Media Extender client. The 360 essentially seems to act as a dumb terminal, interfacing with the application running on the PC.

Here's where things really get interesting: It's apparently very easy to integrate Windows applications into the MCE "More Programs" tab. All you have to do is build a link in a format specified by MS and do some minor optimization, and the app will run in MCE. Here is how MS describes the process of building games for MCE: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...vgameswinmc.asp

So I downloaded a couple of apps and installed them on MCE, switched over to the 360, and lo and behold, most of them run perfectly. I was able to run apps with modified browsers to pull down news stories, stock quotes, sports scores etc., as well as several Internet Radio clients.

I also tried installing a couple of shareware games, including a Tetris clone and some card games. Interestingly, they all launch on the 360, but crash soon afterwards. My guess is that you could get them to run with some optimization. There even is a MAME emu for MCE out there, though I haven't tried to install it.

My guess is that it will be difficult to get anything other than simple casual games to run in real time using the interface, due to lag in response times. But I would think getting something like a full web browser up and running should be achievable.

I wonder if you can share an Action Replay folder.
ferrari_rulz_02
so all that it does is passes the output to the xbox 360, it doesnt actually execute it from the 360?
LastRitz
disable internet connection in MCE, not xbox connection MS might patch this quick

why would they? from what i understand, the app is run from teh media centre pc, and the screen output is send via the network to the 360. all of the commands entered are then relayed back to the media centre pc for execution.

so there is absolutley no way this could be a way to hack into the 360.

its like remote control of a pc. ever done that?

the program runs on the PC, and the out put is on the xbox, correct?

would a divx/xvid player work?

WOWOWOW

awesome...just awesome..this is what they meant by "homrbrew friendly" ...this is so cool...its like widgets on mac osx 10.4 but with optimizations we will have Zinc and other emulators running in no time!

Thanx for the heads up...this is a Special day for Emulator fans...wonder if it can run Star wars trilogy!

that's the first thing i noticed.... the size of the tv compared to the xbox... damn!!!

i smell a software hole, bring on the exploits!

Calm down everyone, stop getting over excited. All its doing is showing the MCE PC's output on the xbox 360. there is a lag also. Regards playing divx? i doubt it will - at least not well.
Avenger 2.0
It's basicly just like Remote Desktop. There is nothing running on the Xbox!

Jeh..Just a limited wireless sharing device for your television..

Ahh well, i dont care yet...XBMC is good enough for now.

sure is. the media centre part of the 360 will be better though.

what i want to see (after is is hacked), is a 'custom' x360 media centre. it gives a good platform for level competition between ms and open-source.
ksteiner
We're getting closer to modding this and when its moded ill get one. Hopefully you will be able to put mozilla and other sweet things and put windows in it. I dont like linux its hard to use need something like windows xp or maybe the new one vista if theres a away.

RE: Playing divx/xvid. If you can use a program to listen to internet radio then surely you can use something like videolan to stream divx/xvid or any other type of media file.

Someone would need to code a program like the internet radio app we have already seen but stream the media from a local machine using videolan.

For those of you how don’t know what videolan is check here

this looks quite promising, actually. the fact is that data is being sent to and from the 360 and it's RAM (at least, maybe even HDD, too) through [probably] unencrypted ethernet/WiFi. if we could sneak extra data in and cause an overflow or something of that sort, a hack may be possible. of course, I'm no real technical guy when it comes to this, and I'm thinking way ahead, but it could be feasible. for now, I'm stuck trying to get MCE to run on VirtualPC for my PowerBook smile.gif

DivX/Xvid is very possible, just look for the app and make the profile, just like Rhindle said.

I smell homebrew dashboards and media centers just around the corner...

This is one of the main reasons i plan on buying a 360. There are plenty of programs that are built to run on wmc. There are a few programs, like a web browser, that aren't on there, but with a mod scene like xbox-scene knowing about this, i only imagine it's only a matter of time before we get some very inventive uses for media center extender. Just look at xbmc and all of the things it can use just from a normal pc, which isn't optimized to share data like the 360 and wmc. This could become a very big deal pretty soon.
CancerBoy
This is indeed great news. With this I see great potential for the homebrew scene, many talented programmers out there never learnt to program for xbox but I can see alot of homebrew being developed for the 360 this way. But thats just my opinion.
ornerybuzzard
Can somone try to find out how to ftp into the xbox using the the media center pc.
Maybe find a USERNAME/PASSWORD/PORT# for say flash fxP.

THAT WOULD BE A GOOD START TO GETTING IN THE BOX

*sigh*

Why are people like this around?

Just to clarify a few things - these programs are not running on the 360 what so ever. Your computer is executing all the code, and your xbox is just displaying the information. This won't help the homebrew scene, or any code development for the 360 as the code isn't running on the 360!
CattyKid
Anyoen feel like running the Windows build of OpenDash, if possible? I know it won't let us do anything, but it will be a program designed for Xbox (kind of) running on (not really running ON) 360.

I do understand this but. I personally never said anything about it being an exploit I simply stated that with talented pc programmers out there that they could come up with some applications for this. Pc written and executed but displaying on the 360 I think that is pretty cool and has potential. I do see your point alot of people are taking this the wrong way.
bho76
well if you could get the emulator stable then you should be able to play it. as you say it is vor viewing mostly. well. hook up your controller to your pc and play away.
flashfreak
As people have stated, divx/xvid player may not be possible cos of lag, unless an av delay tool is implented.

I think once its hacked (may be years away according to ms), some1 should just modify the current media player to play xvid, thats all it needs.

If MS put this 'my programs' feature in, they've obviously put a lot of thought into the fact that it could be a security hole. I'm gonna expect this will not be an easy way in, they're too smart for that
lilbplaya3406
There has to be a way to hack this, i know its running off the computer, but its sending stuff from the media center to your xbox360, there has to be a way to redirect the path where its going, andh ave information saved on your hard drive.

What potential would that be? You'd be better off just getting a TV-Out adapter for your PC, so the response time wouldn't lag. Just because its going through the 360 doesn't make it some how any better. All the 360 is doing is taking the output and running it to your TV! Its just a $400 TV-Out adapter!
LastRitz
anyone know the exact protocol the 360/MCE use to communicate? and if and where do any 360 folders show up on the MCE ...??

Also can someone put that .xex file in the MCE folder where it looks for messenger etc please

this would be a little help in gaining some knowledge

REMEMBER when we all put are damn heads together shit gets done faster, that is the beauty of the internet...

Who knows what the potential will be. I'm just looking forward to what might happen is all. If you disagree that is fine, only time will tell.

the poll question on DIVX.com is

Are you going to buy (or have you already bought) an Xbox 360?

maybe they are planing to release legit divx drivers for the 360
smash_linux
Hi, I just installed some apps on my MCE, and I'm able to run them if I run Media Center from my computer. But if I try to run them from my Xbox 360, I don't see the apps listed On More Programs. I can activate them in the program options, check or uncheck them, but can't seem to launch them from the main window. Anyone has tried it yet?

Umm no. Not unless you want to buy 20foot long component cables.

With X360 you can run a network cable, stream it digitally, then output over component cables. No need to spend a ridiculous amount of money on extremely long component cables, and much better image quality than composite.

now that is interestign news indeed. it is not much to go on, but we can hope.

it would be good if they could strike a deal with m$ so that we can watch divx movies on the 360...
jfoster
This is intentional.

Anyone ever use Terminal Server? Well, that is what this is. It doesnt take complete remote control of the MCE machine, but the MCE machine creates a virtual session for it. This is not explitable, IMO. Although you might be ablet o get some interesting things to work through the RDP session (which is what this is, I believe)
ferrari_rulz_02
yeah, lets all just remember that this is not exploitable. at all.

but jfoster's right, we can get some interestign things to happen
ShadowElitePro
Yes this is intresting. This could go somewhere.
ssj4android
Is it possible for these media center apllications to access the video playback capabilities of XP MCE/the Xbox 360? Has anyone written a plugin to watch launch music videos like XBMC? Could someone write a program that autmatically transcodes a selected video file into WMV? Can the Xbox 360 play WMV streams? That's a big question that I don't know the answer too because I don't have a 360. Someone try playing an asx file.
tijir
Check out Transcoder for streaming DivX and XviD to the 360.

XNA all the way.....
