This is our first complete 360 mod in all of its sexyness. I wish the photo's could only accurately show how purdy it really is. The Yamaha R1 Blue just doesnt photo very well.
Fixed a few of the problems I dont like about the xbox in the process:
First a 12V fan mod to make sure Im not one of the ones with heat problems. Its loud but as anyone that has their 360 knows if you have to play a game from a disc its already loud. The fans dont seem to add to much above the overly loud DVD drive.
Second, we installed a 60GB 2.5" IDE drive internally to allow storage of OUR media. Streaming is cool and all but what if I wanna bring my stuff with me and my xbox.. doh! so much for that. You can plug the drive in via the rear usb plug to load media and stuff to it.
Replaced the stock green ring of light and power button LED's with blue ones. Added the window and a 4" cathode to bling out the insides a bit.
The paint is top grade automotive PPG basecoat/clearcoat. Used a Mercedes Brilliant Silver for the memory port and usb doors, power button and the top and bottom grills and hard drive caddy. The rest is Yamaha R1 Blue.
Anyways. There are more pictures here.
360 Window Mod PicsWe will be putting together some tutorials for all of the work done that will be posted soon.

That is absolutely brilliant.
I saw it on you're site and left some feedback there. I was just about to post a pic fo it here but you beat me to it.
the paint and the shape of the window are pefect. So is the lighting. Still not exactly sure how you access the hard drive through the dash. Is it accessed as a standard usb media device?
Anyway great work 10/10

I was looking at the pictures on his site drooling and what i think he did was add a hole out of the back and just has it plugged into the rear USB port. So the 360 will just read it as a normal portable device. Am i right?

That gets a HAWTNESS award or something. VERY nice work. I'm impressed. How did you cram that extra HDD in there? I would have assumed MS wrung out all available space...
birdwig
Nov 29 2005, 04:48 PM
And what about that hard drive being so crammed in there that it doesn't have space to breathe on the top or the bottom? That's scary. But it does look good. I'm unsure of whether or not I'm going to mod mine in any way yet. In a way I really really want to, but in another sense, I just want to not, b/c I fear problems down the road (launch date consoles ALWAYS have problems). I'm torn...

Nov 29 2005, 04:59 PM
Nice... I love the color... I also like your idea of adding the extra drive for storage of your media....
I'm just waiting for someone to fill up that space behind the power button with a LCD... i mean it's an all in one gaming station once you do that... stand it up and play... all you need is power and network...

That shit looks amazing. You need to post some tutorials or something about that hard drive though. Is it just an external you popped in there? Love that box though. No offense to 537h, but yours looks
slightly better.

show inside pics...the 12v fan mod and how you mounted everything; im VERY curious. As well as what can you store exaclt on the 60gig...What have you discovered exactly? Am i understanding correctly that if you have a media center pc you can transfer your video/mp3s etc. to the 60 gig and still play them? Please indulge us with your knowlege!

PS IT LOOKS AMAZING!!

ditto, the only way I can access video is through Windows Media Center(which I dont have) or stored on the HDD witch I cant put my chappelle episodes on there!!! but for music and pics the usb works perf. So how much was the harddrive and how did u hook it up using a usb? Is it an external drive?

The paint can be bought at any automotive industrial paint supplier. Around here in MN its Sherwin-Williams or Keystone. We used PPG DBU/DCC base/clear combo. The basecoat is the cheapest at about $50 a pint. The clear was I think around $60 a pint. You also need reducer for the basecoat and hardener for the clear which are about $50 for enough for the two pints of base and clear. It is really expensive if you just need to paint one thing because a pint is usually the smallest quantity you can buy. I can paint quite a few 360's with a pint of each though. You will also need a HVLP paint gun or some delivery method. You couldnt screw the basecoat up if you tried... the clear on the other hand takes a little more skills.
The best part about using auto paint is obviously the durability but also the cure time and overall quality of the finish. I can paint a part and within a hour its dry to the touch. Overnight and its hard as nails. Aerosol takes weeks to reach its final hardness. No matter how hard you try you could never achieve the same level of quality finish with aerosol that you can get with professional equipment and materials. Its worth the investment IMO. Once you have the stuff you may find yourself painting a whole bunch of things

.
The 12V fan mod is pretty straight forward. I will post a tut about it soon also but I want to try a few things first. Id like to run the fan at somewhere between 8 to 10 volts to cut some noise. Once I have it dialed in we will post a tut on how to do that also.
The hard drive is in fact running usb 2.0. It is addressable via the 360 dashboard to play music, videos and pictures. You can disconnect the drive in the rear and plug it into your PC to update your content. There will be alot more information posted about the whole works shortly.. I just need to finish up some other mod ideas before we make the tutorials. As far as space goes.. There really isnt much to work with to locate the drive elsewhere. I am not worried about heat issues because the drive runs really cool anyways and there is quite a bit of air moving through there now. I think it has more ventalation than it would in any standard laptop implementation of it.
The drive is a standard 2.5" IDE laptop drive. We have used one of our ultra slim usb drive carriers and pulled the usb to ide board out of it. Then you need to use something like partition magic to create a large fat32 partiion and format it. Plug it all up and it will work like a champ. Windows XP and the 360 dashboard will both be able to read and write from it. Like I said on our site about the creation of the box, the file view that you get via USB "portable" devices is alot better than the filtered views MS gives you for browsing "their" hard drive. Thank goodness because I was going to be really dissapointed in the thing if it wasnt for this working the way it does.

It's a storage drive for music and pictures and stuff. It's connected through the usb cord that sticking out of the back of the xbox.

Im still wondering more about the HDD...tell us more; what are you able to do with the larger HDD besides more MP3's and Pics, cause the dashboard wont let you stream videos from your External HDD, ive tried with my 2 gig flashdrive (FAT32). I can only read mp3s and pics. Any word?

I will say it.. it is a nice case.. and the color is perfect.

I'd personally have loved it more if it was a regular joe without the deep pockets and probable access to more than one unit.. but it's a nice mod.
No doubt.. the scene artists here on XS will show us more.. and better mods. They always do.

Yeah.. I guess I need to edit the orinal post. After reading about the video's not working for other I went to try it and found that you cant even access the portable device from the video's applet. It was a very long day when it all came back together and I didnt even try vidoes and figured it worked just like the music and photos. It is a real bummer its not.. hopefully that will change.
Please J. Allard.. please... give us local content.. give us more media formats PLEASE!!!
