OK here's how to do a 12v mod, but it's extremely loud. You will also lose the auto-adjusting functionality of the fans, where the voltage increases as the CPU temp does. That shouldn't be a problem though.

STEP ONE:

Take the RED and the BROWN wires shows below, and cut them off at the top of the plug, so you have the most wire left. Leave the BLACK and BLUE wires, as they're just grounds.

IPB Image

STEP TWO:

Twist, then solder the RED and BROWN wires together, then solder a third wire to that, about 5" long. Solder the OTHER end of the third wire to the pin shown below, either on the bottom of the motherboard, or onto the wire that does to the DVD drive.

IPB Image

And there ya go, both fans are now running at 12v. If you only want 1 fan to run at 12v, cut only one of the wires, RED or BROWN, and leave the other one alone. If you want 1 or both of the fans to run at 7v, then cut the BLACK and BLUE wires, and solder them to a 5v source on one of the USB plugs.

It seems there's a lot of people looking for this tutorial, but havn't seen it cause it was way down at the bottom of the page. So here's a bump, even though it's for no good reason.

I'm just going to buy 2 replacement fans that are better and less noisy

Nice tut dude. Good work.
NEUROMODS
Is it possible to strip 2 wires and connect a 3rd fan? For instance leave the regular fans connected, and just slap a smaller fan in another place connected to the same wires? If so... What wires would I need to strip to power another fan?
zilli0n
there are actually holes in the front of the motherboard where the ring on light is for another fan relay... ill post pics later.
NEUROMODS
Yes please do, I'm looking at adding another fan soon for cooling
bucko
You say it's very loud, is it louder than the Xbox 1 12volt fan mod? I'd assume not since there 90MM fans right, but I guess there is two of them beasts.

NoFear1488
So can you solder a 3 pin connector there and hook up a fan to that?
flashfreak
Probably.

And bucko, these are 60mm fans, not 90mm
Gokussj5okazu
OK here's a good warning. Do not connect anything extra to the stock fan connector! It will blow a very sensative component on the mobo, and render the fan plug useless. Only draw power from the 5v USB, the 12v DVD, or that extra fan source it that's what it is. Btw, I believe they're 80mm fans, not 60mm or 90mm. I kinda measured them roughly, and 60mm is way too small. But 90mm is too big.
NEUROMODS
I didn't connect anything to the stock fan connector. I have connected a red wire to the 12v DVD-Rom connector and grounded the black to the metal plating. I then connected to that 5 fan connectors. However, for some reason only 3 wired fans work. 2 wired fans will not run. I have a fan with leds I wish to put inside, but it has only two wires. Anyone know a way I can get it to run? Also is that front connector working anyone tried it? Which is positive and which is negative on it?
zilli0n
Just got my jap console in, would highly recommend doing this mod... system is definatly alot cooler. I put arctic silver 5 on my heatsinks and put a heatsink over the southbridge this time as well. It is a bit louder but on par of the loudness of the xbox1 fan at 12v.
zilli0n
I just wanted to tab up on this reply and say that I played quake 4, for a good 30 minutes and absolutely felt no hot air, not even mildly warm. Sure its a bit loud but at the end of the day your system stays extremely cooled. This mod should be performed on alot of 360's i truely recommend it again. My discs used actually be very warm/hot after playing, now they stay nice and cool. 10/10 mod

They are 60mm. Definately not 80mm. I have 2 80mm case fans that I bought for my original XBOX and to put in my computer and I know that 80mm is just too big.

Did the fan mod and added 2 60m blue led fans
muchcooler and the blue is nice

no I'm "ragging" on you becuase you find every little excuse to post your ZOMG FIRST ONE WITH TEH LCD pos xbox on this site. enough with it already.

Just link to your thread in your sig instead of infecting these threads with that POS.

Touche.

And what is the big deal about doing this 12v mod? The fans run at 12v when needed.

Supposedly... If you take the fan duct off or out of your system it will crank up relatively fast. But for addition cooling so you dont have to rely on the 360's temp control, its great to have.

Ok so i really didnt want to start another 12v fan tutorial here it is!

Things you need.
1. Soldering iron
2. Any sort of fan.
3. A RC car charger (has to have an output of 12v)

first. cut the end off the 12v car charger. then strip the red and black wire down till you see the copper. Now cut the end connector off of your fan. And strip the red and black wire till you see the silver . Now take the red wire of the charger and solder it to the red fan wire. And repeat this step with the black wires. Put it in an outlet and there you go! A 12v External fan. I use 2 on my adapter ( I HAVE TESTED MORE THAN 2 BUT THE SPEED GETS DECREASED GREATLY WITH MORE THAN 2. SO EACH ADAPTER SHOULD HAVE NO MORE THAN 2 FANS ON IT). I have to say THEY ARE AWESOME! If you really want, this is not necessary, i hotglued the bottom of the fan to the shelf. since i wont be moving them ever. this isnt manditory but it helps keep a sturdy ground. The fans of the 360 are still louder and dont even put out even anywhere near how much these fans put out! I have had my 360 running for an hour straight and the psu is cold as ice!

I'm interested in reducing the noise of the 360, especially when in 'quiet mode' (i.e. when acting as a Media Center Extender). In this mode, it appears that all the noise is from the fan(s) - just a constant 'whir' that occassionally changes in pitch.

Has anyone tried a direct swap-out of the fans for higher quality (quiet) ones? For example something like:
http://www.quietpcusa.com/acb/showdetl.cfm..._ID=257&CATID=7

These will spin at 5VDC and generate < 10dBA.

Anyone know the specs of the stock fans? CFM/Current/etc.?

Those are horrible fans. my fans are 50mm fans and they put out more air flow than those do. laugh.gif Get something on www.coolerguys.com, or newegg.com they have some good quality fans for low prices.

Horrible? 13.7CFM @ 12V @ 16.9dBA? The 60mm Vantec Stealthpro from coolerguys puts out 12CFM @ 12V @ 20dBA. Can you give me a link to a better, quiet fan then?

I want to at least match the cooling capabilities of the stock fans, but lower the noise.

38dBA and 32dBA? I think you're missing what I'm looking to do.

I'm not trying to get better cooling than stock. If I do, swell. I'm looking to lower the noise. I seriously doubt putting in a 32dBA fan is going to do that.

I tried using an ohmeter to see if any of these points have 12V and have confirmed that none of the three do.

how are you checking voltage with a OHM meter?

volts and ohms are different....

I have a hard time believing that your going to get the system to run any quiter by swapping the fans. The noise when either in game or not (aka media center use or whatever) is still almost entirly from the dvd drive. The humming noise that you hear is from the dvd drive. Don't believe me then disconnect your fans and turn the system on. Don't worry you won't blow anything up it simple will just give you the red ring of death after the system reaches a certain temp. and needless to say I had mine continue to work for about 5 minutes before that happened which I don't really recommend. Just leave it on long enough to verify what I'm saying. Anyway you will still hear the same amount of noise as when they are plugged in because like I said its entirly from the dvd drive. You will not get rid of any of the humming or anything by changing fans. Unless you have the machine turned around backwards and are sittign within 2 feet of the back of the case you will not hear any difference and even then it would be so small of a difference that it would be pointless to do this mod for the sole intent of getting less noise. Now getting increased airflow and cosmetic reasons I can understand because there are defenitly better fans then the ones back there that are rated at higher airflow and at the same noise lvl if not lower and they look cooler! smile.gif
chrisdot
i got the blu fans from coolerguys and installed em but tbh its not a mod im fully happy with as noise is an issue for me.
it seems like its on full fan speed all the time even in dash, yet it quietens down when playin a movie. playin a game and sittin in dash are the same noise level, strange.....
when it is powered on from bieng off overnight (cool) its quiet as a mouse until it heats up a bit then very soon after approx 2-3mins its whirring like a mad man!!!!!!!! i live in a guest house that i run so i cannot play my 360 after a certain time because of the 747's taking off in my living room!!!!!!!
with the stock fans the fanspeed seemed to me more regulated than with these fans, i followed tut and rechecked my wiring but it all seems to be in order.
now thinkin of rewirin 1 of the fans to help the noise level.
N0 F3AR 1488
Perfect Fan!
Man this is the perfect fan for the 360 cause it's high CFM and LOW noise. The only problem is that it's bundled with the heatsink and it's $50! I just want the fan but I can't find the fan seperately and I aint paying nearly $100 just for 2 fans for the 360. dry.gif
