I'm getting an odd behavior and can't think of why. I got a new HDTV that does a res my old one couldn't (720P) as well as 1080i. If I play a 1.85:1 aspect ratio movie it fits perfectly if I play it in 1080i mode in XBMC, but if I play the same movie after switching to 720P mode I get bars on the top and bottom of the same movie (in both cases I have XBMC "stretch" modes set to "Normal"). Since both 720P and 1080i are 1.77:1 ratios why don't they behave the same when playing the same movie?
