I softmodded an xbox and without any problems. I'm now trying to FTP into it so that I can back it up and upgrade the hard drive. I have set the IP information up correctly to match my network, but am not able to FTP into the box. I've tried a different cable, static IP, and dhcp ip. I am never able to ping the box and when I tell it to use dhcp, it will try to request an address and then quit and leave the address at 0.0.0.0. I've tried avaluanch, unleashx, and evox. None of them work. I'm starting to think the network jack is somehow bad on the xbox. The only thing that makes me not think that is that the green link light comes on when I plug the cable in and the orange "traffic" light flashes when the xbox is requesting the ip address. I know my dhcp server is ok, cause other computers pull from it just fine. Will a softmodded xbox only communicate via a crossover cable directly to another computer or should it be able to use a standard network connection?

It can work on both. I have my xbox and pc connected to a router which handles the DHCP and it works fine. Very strange why it doesn't work with your xbox. Hope somebody has an answer I just wanted to say it works with crossover or straight

I had the same problem for a hole day, then I just kept messing around with the settings and it finaly worked. I used the DHCP mode and it put an ip in for me. I would upload a pic but not sure how to do that on here yet.

If using evox make sure that you set it to dhcp and scoll to the bottom of the settings and select "save and exit" also make sure that you are using a straight network cable with your router/hub and that you properly disabled certain firewalls

If you are connecting your xbox Directly to your PC and not to a router or hub you Will have to use a cross over cable to communicate with the PC. Otherwise a straight through cat5e cable will work fine.

I went and bought a crossover cable. I've tried it all and it just doesn't work. I've restored the original MS Dash and even it won't pick up an address via DHCP. At this point I feel confident it is a bad network jack on the xbox and will resell it on ebay with that note. It will be great for someone, just not a "modder"
Thanks for all the help!

Try using UnleashX and static IP, when UnleashX get's a live network it will display the IP address on the settings screen, be sure to reboot the dash first after you've set it to static.
