Wouldn't it suck if you got the 360 at launch and you've been waiting for xmas to open it and finally you discover.....that you have a defective unit?
I hope this doesn't happen to me. But I've been reading around and I know not to turn the system while its on. I know to give it proper ventilation. I know to keep that big @ss battery off the ground so it doesn't overheat. Am I missing anything? Ha! So many little kids are going to scratch their game discs on the 25th...it's going to be a shame.

And wouldn't it suck if the "big ass battery" was actually a big ass battery and you had to recharge it all the time. Sheesh!!

Why would someone buy a 360 for themself, on launch day, and wait till christmas to open it?

That would be weird, especially if you live by yourself! But some people have gf's/wives/family/etc, that paid for it as a gift and they want the person to wait for the holidays. I'm not saying I bought it for myself, I'm just using the scenario as an example. Plenty of people here are in this position. :-)
That would be awful to live in a cabin in the woods waiting to open the box on xmas morning and not only are you lonely, you have no electricity haha.

Well, if it's for the holidays, then the person receiving the gift isn't supposed to know what it is, so why would they have to worry if it wont work, if they dont even know what they're getting?

And there is no battery, what that brick thing is the Power Supply.

I am almost that person (or weirdo if you prefer) - I have used my 360 only to play existing xbox titles - I'm keeping the 360 stuff for xmas day

Although the other day I got glitches in the graphics for the first time...
Wouldn't it suck if my 360 crashed with 360 stuff

My 360 crashed after a 4 hour session

i thought it was wierd when it wouldnt load my custom colour settings on the Guide and Dash so i turned it off and back on to find error 68, phoned M$ the next morning and found out it was the HDD

so the man told me to take the HDD off and turn it on...... so i did and it worked

so i sent my HDD off to M$ and they are sending me a brand new HDD and re-enbersing the price to ship the defective one to them. My tip for the christmas day people lay your 360 on its side so heat doent rise into the HDD and mess it up.
TIP: for the rest of the people check the bottom grill (the grey grill which would be the bottom if it was standing up) and you will notice cold air flowing out of it...... just for those who didnt notice that

That's okay. I started this thread because I figured many people were waiting to enjoy their 360 during the holidays. So I'm just reminding people the do's and don'ts of their 360s. Everyone knows not to tilt it while it's on, but its easy to make that mistake. Aside from over heating and proper ventilation, there's nothing really you can do to prevent a defective unit. I'm sure you'll still be able to get some play out of it regardless before you decide to ship it to MS.
If something is wrong with my console, I'm going to prolly ship it in January. I'm still going to enjoy it as much as I can unless I get the red lights. Anybody else have any advice or recommendations for those that are waiting? I think the dvd game scratching is the most help.
I also know that many kids aren't aware of this and are going to screw up their games on the 25th. This is just too bad because people just don't know. Kids are going to tear their games apart and have no idea why. So if you're a parent, make sure you tell yours kids are supervise them when they handle their games. I know I'd be upset if my child messed it up after I waited many hours in the cold :-p. You can only do so much...*sigh*.

ok ill start
don'ts:- Move the xbox while disk is spinning.
- Fiddle with the HDD (AKA taking in/out while console is on, same applies to memory cards)
- Cover any holes that may hinder the air flow (this includes position of the 360 it self)
- cover the power 'BRICK'
do's- Try and buy a laptop underside cooling fan thing (google it)
- Keep it near an open window (just make sure it doesnt get wet !!!

)
- Have lots of fun on your nice white console

Most will really not have to worry, the defective consoles are not as prevalent as this forum suggests. Most work without a hitch (unless the user does something silly). This forum is just full of xbox folks, so everyone who is on it and has a defective 360 posts a thread about it. All those whose 360's work fine are not heard from.

Sad but true,
I have read and fully understand not moving the box while it is on, and like a big ole dummy, did it anyway.
Completely ruined my PGR3 disc.
I don't know what I was thinking! My dog bumped the entertainment center and the 360 wobbled, and looked like it was going to fall (it was vertical)
I thought ot myself "ohshitohshitohshitohshit. . . ."
Jumped up, and laid it on it's side to save it from puppyman.
CRUNCH.
Ah well, I'm sure I can get another copy, but what a silly thing I did

I have dogs as well as children so I keep the 360 in its side so they don't knock it over. I suggest those in similar situations do the same or use book ends or something to prop it up (I think that there is a fan you can buy that props it up).
For the fellow who ruined his disk, take it to walmart and return it, they will exchange almost anything (even if you didn't buy it there).

Yea, that clearly wasn't your fault. This is what I mean about how we can move the 360 without realizing it. The disc scratch problem is going ot be very common. Reflexes can only do so much :-p. Yea I plan to lay it horizontal for that reason. Thanks for the post!

I will never put mine vertical ever...stupid to do so. The DVD drives in the system has no way of securing the disc once it's inside so naturally there' s chance of it being scratched, etc.
Further like someone said, with it vertical, the HD is at the top and heat rises so it will add further heat to the HD.
I think a lot of problems could be resolved if people kept their systems horizontal...that's just my opinion.
