Okay, so i've tried to read the tutorial on the main site, but i'm really not good with computers (mostly flashing bios, booting or disks etc.) Okay, so i have a harddrive downstairs in a comp that doesn't work anymore (problem w/ the ribbon cables, not the hd.) Now this hd has windows 98SE on it i think, aswell as some other stuff from when i used the comp. I want to be able to open up the comp, do whatever i have to do with the hd, then plug it into my xbox replacing the old hd which has now stopped working. As i said, i don't know much about what i'm doing....is there any SIMPLE instructions on what i need to do to get this hd working from where its at now. I dont have a floppy drive on this comp, but we have quite a few laptops so i can get one if necessary. Can anyone help me plz? I'm missing my halo 2 sad.gif

you post is kinda confusing, do you want to stick your xbox hard drive into your comp or stick your computer hd into your xbox? if you are sticking your comp hd into your comp then you will need to back up your eeprom from your xbox so that you can lock the new hard drive to your box and format it using xboxhdm(otherwise it wont boot). if you did not back up your eeprom then you will need to chip it to be able to lock your hd.

Okay, sorry for the confusion...yes i want to take the hd from the comp and put it into the xbox. Now...as you'll see i am a noob, what is eeprom? and how do i do what you said biggrin.gif

an eeprom is a file stored on the xbox motherboard that locks and unlocks your hd. it is what makes an xbox different from every other xbox. the eeprom are different on every box. so you cannot just take a random hard drive from another box and stick it into another box cause the motherboard will not be able to unlock the hd and boot the box. if you didn't back up your eeprom before your hd died then you will have to chip the box to be able to lock and unlock the hd. Did you make a back up of your box's hd before it died?

No, there was no point at that moment in time.

ok your best option is to chip your xbox.

With a modchip i presume? I'm really not all into that and kinda don't trust myself...do i have to solder crap or change wires or add wires when installing a modchip...also will this modchip definetely work...and how much will it cost?

I ask so many questions because i'm getting an xbox 360 in the spring and i don't want to have a lot of hassle fixing my xbox (which may or may not work) for only a few months... smile.gif

I've already repaired an xbox that had this prob WITHOUT a chip. You'll need a modded box from a friend or something, and if its not a 1.6 version it should work. I wrote a tut , somewhere on the forum.

YOu'll need the tsop flsh tho ( this means solder 2 bridges on your xbox mobo)

I have exactly the same problem... my HD is now dead and I have no way of getting my EEPROM back. My Xbox was going to be modded over the next few days, but I was just wondering what was the best thing for me to do. Would it be simpler to buy a solderless mod plus a new unlocked HD or is there anything else simpler that I should do?
