my friend has XBL. he called me saying he got randomly booted from a game, and now he cant connect to live. it gives him the hardware modification error. hes too afraid to open his xbox so i know nothing is corrupted. is there any way around this other than softmodding and ftping a new eeprom to his xbox?
or is it something else?

You can't just ftp a eeprom, you have to remove it off the mobo and solder a new one on there..

That's not true. No soldering is required for a new eeprom. Use configmagic.
As for the original post -- so your friend's Xbox was banned with a modification error but he has made no modifications to his Xbox? Is that what you are saying? If so, he should call MS and tell them what happened.

Right, configmagic can be found in the usual places.
Remember, his banned eeprom and harddrive are "married," so he'll also need a new stock hard drive that has never been on XBL. If he has a modification error, his gamertag has been flagged, and he has to use a stock hard drive.
Sounds like a lot of trouble, especially with a softmod, that could probably be avoided with a phone call.
