Hey guys..
First of all.. love the game, give it 4.5 out of 5.
Quick question for you though...
Does the long flowing hair on the girls dissapoint anyone else
besides me?
All of the long hair seems to move in chunks as it slides
around on their shoulders and I would
have expected to see finer hair (individual strands) on the 360.
I know this seems like a minor thing, but the game is so beautiful in
many ways... then you see chunks of hair sliding around on their shoulders.
...its just kind of freaky, dont you think?

I've been playing for a while also. It is rather dissappointing to see hair that looks like it did on the dreamcast but that could also be said for the characters. While the backgrounds are jaw dropping the characters almost look slightly out of place. Now if DOA5 ends up looking like the CG endings in DOA4 then I will get it otherwise this will be my final DOA game.

same here. that's really disappointing, looks like DOA3 is better in rendering hair

WHAT!? You mean you guys don't like the dreadlocks on the ladies!? hahaha, yea I wasn't feeling them either

. They tried something different with the hair and thought the accomplished something. Although the movements look great and natural with the hair, the chunks seem weird. They need to do it differently like they do with parts of the clothing so it can look real. Perhaps it wouldnt look right on the doll like characters so they had to do chunks, iunno....

Wow! I've been thinking of starting this thread since I got the game. It really looks like total crap. I know the system can do better. Here's the thing though...would you rather wait until July for sweet lookin hair?

Initially, I noticed the hair and sometimes the costumes in trailers and videos, and it looked a little awkward. But after having picked up the game and having played it for a while I do not notice either at all. Giving the hair and costumes their own physics is a step up in my opinion. The other thing I might add is that I play on my HDTV in 1080i, and on my monitor in 1280x1024, so things like blocks and chunks might be less visible.

Come on are we forgetting these are 1st generation titles? The GAMEPLAY IS TIGHT (Not the Slang) the online is pretty nice I don't really care about the hair physics as I know in time stuff like this will be worked out, right now I'm enjoying the hell out of this game.

It would damn near be impossible still with this hardware to be able to do individual strands of hair on a women withoug comprimise on graphics or something that might be cpu intensive. When your talking about 100's of strands of hair moving independently of all other hair while still not intruding any other hair or surface your really going to cause a lot of cpu to be waisted on something so small. Watch the behind the scenes video for final fantasy: spirit within and they will tell you how they were forced to do the hair on a seperate layer because it just to long to render with everything else.

what annoys me most about the hair is how it slides on their clothes as if everything was made out buttered silk

The hair designs were done that way purposely. They wanted to make the hair flow extremely realisticly while the characters are "fighting" not while in victory poses or other times in the game.
Wow, an amazing game comes out and every aspect of it is awesome and someone has to point out what is probably its only "minor" flaw. What the heck is the matter with you people lol, I mean damn, the game rocks and all people want to do is trash it in one way or another.
I dont find the hair to be a distraction or irritation at all. The game is definitely the best DOA yet and will be for a long time, this is what we have and its awesome. Everything in DOA4 has been improved from DOA Ultimate and DOA3 and this puppy is capable of 1080i resolution. Its like someone saying no to a million dollar diamond because it has a slight bit of color in it lol.
DOA4 is hands down the best DOA yet, HAVE A NICE DAY.

Dude, calm down.. its just a topic to discuss about.
We all love the game here... like I said.. 4.5 out of 5.
Maybe Team Ninja did design it that way... I'm just saying
it looks like something you'd not expect on a 360. Thats all.
If we really wanted to get more nitpicky about the game, I'm sure we
could go on and on about certain aspects that we have already been overlooking
for the last 2 to 3 installments of the game.. but thats not what we
are discussing here..
its just simply.... hair.

The hair looks good in gameplay, but in cutscenes they needed some work on the hair flowing. I noticed it in story mode with the girl who is German, and the girl who talks to her mom in the Japanese house(I am new to the series, and have'nt gotten the names down). The hair just waves out in big hunky strands. I am enjoying the game, and I hope that the online play will keep me busy for a while.

Im glad im not the only one who thinks the hair looks like ass. A group like Team Ninja should have been able to accomplish something better then what we have. The anime style of the characters faces also contrasts a bit too much with the awesome looking backgrounds for my tastes

I must say that the hair bothers me a bit too. I never really took much notice (because I was getting my ass beaten online) until now. Alas, not even Itagaki is perfect. Perhaps all will be forgiven when DOA5 looks like the DOA4 end movies...

They look like a flat texture
Would have been nice if they added some glassyness to the eyes.

Its funny, cause i had a problem with the hair since the preview videos at e3 but i kept saying to myself that ill wait till the finally product for improvement. Then I heard itagaki in an interview saying he wants each character to have individual strand of hair rendered and i was so excited. Then i read that that enhancement wouldnt make it to doa4 simply because it would change the character design dramactically (which is a huge selling point in japan) and it would definitely push the release date so maybe in the next game. I honestly dont think hardware constraints is what is holding the game back from this. I mean, if the system can render thousands of characters on screen each with their own A.I. without a hitch then i think rendering two characters with 100s of strands of hair wouldnt be impossible.
Ive learned to live with the graphics on the characters though, simply because alot of it was decided on keeping the character design from the previous games intact. So most of the attention was on the backgrounds.
KAGE360
Jan 3 2006, 03:13 PM
itigaki said the system is capable of doing it but it would take too long to render all the hairs freely. they wouldnt have to render them not to overlay, or clip with eachother, there would be soo many strands there you wouldnt be able to notice, but it would be very expensive to produce flowing hair in the game and would have taken way too long to incorperate in the final game. anything that has been done to the game graphically has been done purposely (good or bad). the characters look great IMO and are the closest anime art style has been reproduced in polygons. the backgrounds look great and the gameplay is spot on. been a huge fan of DoA and this is the best one by far and one of the best fighting games out there now.

Are you all really looking at the hair?
YOU'VE ALL JUST LOST YOUR DUDE STATUS!!
Are you playing on a regular TV or on HD? On my HD, I dont notice these things, but when I played on a little 13" TV it is very noticable.
Come on though, there are much better features on these girls to notice then their hair!!

This guy is 100% correct. Playing in a HDTV you do not notice this things. What I notice and care about is how many bounces does a titi make when you kick high or when Christie is wearing a 100% tight polyester shirt in costume #3 while looking at Maybach big muscles, why does not have hard nipples

? You would think I biker girl of her type will do a guy in the middle of a jugle filled with dinos.
We should not care about the hair on their heads, but care about the hair in their private areas. Which in this case it looks like all girls are well shaven. Not even a landing strip!

What are you talking about? You can play this on a 8" dvd player screen, a 27" TV, or a 12' HDTV
projected image (which I have) no matter what the size or resolution of screen, you notice it.
I love the bouncy things as much as the next guy, but if thats all you are concerned about,
I guess we dont even need the nice levels to play on, or whatever else there is to look at
in the game. Some of us look at the other graphics in the game, and thats what this is about.
I was getting ready to go to 'flame mode', but will resist...

Or maybe its not the hair chunks that is the problem.. maybe its just the physics of how it
slides around on their shoulders....? could that be it?

I could care less about an anime fantasy perversion. I don't buy games for CG titties or skimpy clad women. I buy them for gameplay, graphics, sound, and replay value. If I want porn, I'll go to a porn site.

All I'm saying is the guys at Team Ninja did the right thing. If timing was of the essence they decided to spend more time on the bouncing titi's then on the hair. I think Gates will agree with me on this. Bouncing Titis to perfection sells more then how hair flows.
And yes for DoA5 they would work on the hair to make it look more realistic, but still spend more time making sure that their butt cheeks bounce this time around.

Hahaha. I didn't know it was a toss up between Tata's and hair. Personally, I thought the breast physics in DOAU were pretty fantastic. No need to improve.
I don't think the butt cheeks need to bounce. I"m not a "baby got back" kinda guy. Besides they're all ninja chicks. Muscular tightness no matter how you look at it.

Good point, but let's look deeper. You said that there's no need to have bouncing butt cheeks beacuse the female fighters are all muscular and are all tight. If that's the case then when was the last time you saw a Japanesse or Chinnese chick with a C or D chest? The only one's that I've seen are coming out of a Beverly Hills Surgeon's office. All strong female fighters specially from an Asian background do not have any form of breast.
I bet if we were to place flatchested fighters with beautiful flowing hair no one in this forum will be complaining.

You are underestimating the graphics that come out of a system in the later generations. Compare some of the PS2 launch games with say Shadow of the Collosus, or Halo with Ninja Gaiden. See the dramatic improvement? We should expect better that the ending movies for the next DOA game, if they make one. The only way we won't see better in game graphics than that is if Team Ninja decides to not upgrade the models from an anime style to a more realistic one with skin textures, pores, and hairs. Throw in some self-shadowing and better hair physics, the next few generation of Team Ninja games could absolutely blow us away. I sure hope they add some of that stuff for DOAX2.

I'm not underestimating anything. I'm putting the carrot before the mule.
But, inline with my comment, I don't think the 360 will bring graphics resembling the DOA4 end movies. I think Itagaki was crunched for time and needed to make some sacrifices (hair physics being the biggest). I will say that Team Ninja is the best developer MS has in their camp, but Itagaki's penchant for the anime-ish look of his "daughters" will probably not go away. That is unless Tekken 6 or whatever does it. He cannot stand Tekken being "better" in anyway. Anyway, DOAX2 will be better proof of the system's muscle, but don't go expecting Final Fantasy: Spirits Within graphics anytime soon.
